Five more of the cubs went to the indoor pen today . They spent a lot of time exploring their new surroundings . They will stay here for a two to three weeks until they go to a release pen .
We desperately need sites to have a release pen . These need to be in an area or on a property that is secure and where we know they can be released safely . If you think you can help with this please phone the rescue on 01202 380467 and leave a message if no one answers . We will get back to you .
Ivy and Daffy as they have been named we had a call on Sunday about . A man walking his dog had found one of them on a wooded pathway . She was very cold and still . He took her home, warmed her up and phoned us . He went back a while later to check no others and found another one . We went out to see if we could find the earth to ascertain if they could abandoned or whether something had happened to Mum . They are only approx two and half to three weeks old . They were thin and dehydrated when picked up but are now gaining weight.
If something happens to Mum very small cubs will after several hours start to wriggle out of the earth looking for her
These cubs came into us at three weeks old as a family group. They had been on there own for two days calling for their parents so we knew something had happened to Mum and no dog fox around to continue providing food . They were a little thin and dehydrated when collected . As nothing else wrong with them and in a family group we didn’t need to handle them. As soon as they were old enough we introduced them to the indoor pen . When the temperature at night doesn’t drop so drastically they will be off to the release pen . Later in the summer the door will be opened for them to go . They will be support fed for a few weeks .
Ivy was handed in at nearly 8 weeks old . She had been found when her eyes and ears were nearly open and the person kept her for several weeks . We had to scare her away until she learnt humans are not to be trusted . As all the cubs here are too young to form a group with her, she will be going to anther rescue to mix with a cub of the same age . This is Ivy last week investigating her new surroundings .
Please if you find a cub do not keep them , hand them into a rescue and we will check the area to be sure there are no others and will try to reunite with their Mum . If this is not possible we will keep them and mix with cubs if the same age to form a group ready for release later in the year .
The noise you here in the background is normal cub noises from the others. This is Oak who is playing with his first toy
I thought it was time to post three of the foxes that are with us at the moment . We are receiving many calls about injured foxes who most of have sadly been put to sleep. Their injuries were too terrible for them to recover from. This is never easy to do but sadly has to be done.
Snappy was caught at the end of December. She was in a weak state and coughing badly. She had either a very bronchial infection or Lungworm. She had an antibiotic injection and was treated for Lungworm . A couple of weeks later another course of antibiotics and a seven days of Panacur followed. A couple of weeks later another spot on treatment for Lungworm. She is now cough free and looking much better, far more relaxed and eating well.
Sizzles a delightful 13 week old Daschund puppy arrived this week. He was with us for less than a day before Carol and Steve two of our volunteers fell in love and adopted him. His name is now Flash
Ghost is bright, intelligent and learns new commands quickly . Sometimes Rover would rather be left to follow scents on his own but is always patient and tolerant of him. Ghost is fostering with Carol now who has for years trained assistance dogs. We felt he needed more attention and time put into his training to keep his clever mind occupied. Being half Collie and half Poodle he has two very intelligent breeds in his mix . He still comes with me and the other dogs for a walk eveyday. He now sleeps on his own at night, and apart from a couple of whines on the first night is quiet. Considering he came into us with seperation anxiety he has settled amazingly well.
Ghost in the forest on his first off lead walk . He is very good off the lead now .
Rover is looking for a home …… New territory for Rover yesterday and scents to follow. Rover will follow a scent backwards , sideways and forwards tracking where it is leading . Good mental exercise alongside the physical . I wonder sometimes while watching him, that if he could be trained to a scent that he would be good at tracking .
Ghost is looking for a home. Please ring the rescue on 01202 380467 if you are able to offer him a home. Please do not Message on here.
Ghost has been with us for a few weeks now and is settling down into life here very well . Typical puppy who is active and then falls asleep in an instant . As you can see from these photos, he was one minute playing with a blanket that was in the wash pile, then dead asleep with it in his mouth . Ghost will sit and lie down when asked . When off lead in an enclosed area he loves to chase a ball -not so good at handing it over . Instead hopes a game will ensue with me chasing him in circles . Missy does this game with him instead . Ghost will not grow to Collie size rather more the height of Spaniel .
Rover and I have been getting out before light for walks and by 8 am we are ready to go home. We walked off the main paths to start with and across the heath which at times is tricky in this wet weather. I think that if Rover could talk he would be asking why we have to go the difficult ways across the bog. I was questioning myself on that one too after misjudging a step and sloshing back in a water filled boot. When back on the paths we met a few other early bird dog walkers and Rover completely ignored them and at the end of one walk two cyclists whizzed round the corner right next to us. Rover completely ignored these too. We have met many dog walkers and he is oblivious to them . He has come on so much in the last couple of weeks. In fact it is my favourite walk of the day as he is so good .
Rover is still with us and needing a home.
During the cub feeding time I took him to the New forest a few times which he enjoyed . At the end of the walk I thought I would practise his Stay command.
Rover needs a home with a active life and someone who has dog experierence. He loves other dogs
Bill is becoming more confident . He loves to be brushed and is instigating play with me.
Rover had his first off lead walk in the forest yesterday and again today . Never goes too far from me even though he runs off chasing smells and exploring all there is to see, Next couple of weeks will be 2 to 3 hours off lead in the forest running off his energy before starting his training.
Kiki is feeling a lot better now she has been to groomers.
