🐴Equine uveitis is a painful and serious eye condition that can lead to blindness if untreated. It involves inflammation of the middle layer of the eye, which includes the iris, ciliary body, and choroid.

This condition can be caused by injuries, infections like leptospirosis and Lyme disease, or the autoimmune disease Equine Recurrent Uveitis (ERU), also known as "moon blindness." ERU is a major cause of blindness in horses worldwide and can lead to complications such as glaucoma and cataracts.

Regular veterinary check-ups, including measuring intraocular pressure and ultrasound, are crucial to detect any damage such as retinal detachment. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent permanent damage and help protect your horse’s vision.
Watch for signs like squinting, tearing, sensitivity to light, and a cloudy cornea, but in some cases, there are no outward signs until significant damage occurs.

Early intervention is key to preventing long-term issues and ensuring your horse stays healthy and comfortable.

At Strand Vets Equine, we are equipped with all the necessary tools to ensure early detection of uveitis in your horse, providing prompt and effective care.

It's that time of the year to think about your horse's summer plans.
Did you know that Insol injections in early spring (end of February beginning of March) boosts your horse's immune system, helping to build resistance to the midge bite allergens before the summer season begins.
By giving your horse a head start, you can significantly reduce the severity of sweet itch and even prevent flare-ups throughout the warmer months.

Due to Brexit and ongoing customs delays, the supply of Insol is currently limited. Make sure to book your spot early.

With bonfire night fast approaching, Strand Vets Equine is urging horse owners on the Isle of Man to prepare early.
Research your local area and fine out the location and timings of firework displays near you.
Stick to your horse’s routine as sudden changes could leave them feeling unsettled to begin with.
Ensure they are safe and free of injury-risk wherever they plan to spend the night.
Sticking close by and leaving your stable lights on and help to mask the sudden flashes of light in the night sky.
Playing music can also help to dampen the sound of the fireworks but ensure you introduce this ahead of time.
If you know your horse will become extremely stressed during a firework display, contact your vet if sedation is needed.
Call us on 01624 835424.

Did you know that sarcoids are the most common type of skin tumor in horses?
Although non-malignant they can cause significant issues depending on their location and size.
This lovely mare had a fibroblastic sarcoid on her neck which was ulcerating and bleeding.
Here at we used a surgical method to remove the sarcoid under standing sedation.
Histology confirmed full excision and clean margins, which means that the chance of a regrowth is very low.

Despite the mare's attempts to scratch the area, the owner's tremendous dedication and care, with a combination of bespoke post-op treamtent plan from the wound healed up so well that you would barely know it was there.

The surgery was done at the Owner's yard, here on the Isle of Man 🇮🇲

We are proud to offer ArthramidVet APAC to our clients and horses across the Isle of Man 🇮🇲 Providing convenient treatment for non-septic arthritis at your doorstep.

For years, corticosteroids and hyaluronic acid have been the go-to of equine joint care. However, these treatments often come with diminishing efficacy over time, so while, initially, they might show promising results, their ability to provide relief decreases substantially with repeated use, leading to frequent re-treatments and mounting costs.

ArthramidVet offers a superior, longer-lasting solution. By treating the cause of the issue and working to repair the health of the joint, ArthramidVet provides sustained relief and an overall stronger joint, giving much longer relief than traditional treatments.

By choosing ArthramidVet, you’re choosing a scientifically backed, innovative treatment that ensures long-term joint health and fewer interventions.

ArthramidVet is a veterinary-only product, ask your vet for more information, or head to our website https://arthramid.com.au/

!!Codes of practice for the Animal Welfare Act 2023!!

Some great news for animal welfare in the Isle of Man! The codes of practice for the Animal Welfare Act 2023, have been approved by Tynwald and will come into effect from the 1st of June this year.

This should have a huge positive impact on the welfare of the animals on the island and will see harsher penalties for those found guilty of animal cruelty and neglect. Pet owners will now have a legal responsibility to ensure the welfare of their animals, which includes providing them with a suitable living environment, appropriate diet and ensuring adequate care to protect them from pain, injury, and disease.

A copy of the act can be found by following the link below:
