We are proud to offer ArthramidVet APAC to our clients and horses across the Isle of Man šŸ‡®šŸ‡² Providing convenient treatment for non-septic arthritis at your doorstep.

For years, corticosteroids and hyaluronic acid have been the go-to of equine joint care. However, these treatments often come with diminishing efficacy over time, so while, initially, they might show promising results, their ability to provide relief decreases substantially with repeated use, leading to frequent re-treatments and mounting costs.

ArthramidVet offers a superior, longer-lasting solution. By treating the cause of the issue and working to repair the health of the joint, ArthramidVet provides sustained relief and an overall stronger joint, giving much longer relief than traditional treatments.

By choosing ArthramidVet, youā€™re choosing a scientifically backed, innovative treatment that ensures long-term joint health and fewer interventions.

ArthramidVet is a veterinary-only product, ask your vet for more information, or head to our website https://arthramid.com.au/

!!Codes of practice for the Animal Welfare Act 2023!!

Some great news for animal welfare in the Isle of Man! The codes of practice for the Animal Welfare Act 2023, have been approved by Tynwald and will come into effect from the 1st of June this year.

This should have a huge positive impact on the welfare of the animals on the island and will see harsher penalties for those found guilty of animal cruelty and neglect. Pet owners will now have a legal responsibility to ensure the welfare of their animals, which includes providing them with a suitable living environment, appropriate diet and ensuring adequate care to protect them from pain, injury, and disease.

A copy of the act can be found by following the link below:

Additionally, Andrei is working towards his Certificate of Advanced Practitioner.

Our vets are always updating themself with the recent advances in veterinary medicine.

Test! Test! Test!

Overuse of horse worming products is leading to drug resistance. To help keep your horse and other horses safe it is essential to use the worming drugs ONLY when necessary. Testing before you worm provides a better outcome for your horse and all the horses on the Isle of Man.
Educate your yard/livery owners and your vets if necessary.
Stay safe!

Our Primary Care Guidelines on equine parasite control, have been published in the latest issue of the Equine Veterinary Journal (EVJ), alongside a summary of the practical guidance and a supporting editorial. The Guidelines advocate risk-based, diagnostic-led treatments and the editorial calls for anthelmintics to be reclassified as POM-V medicines.

Why staying with one vet practice is beneficial to your horseā€™s welfare

Here are 4 reasons why Strand Vets Equine is advising horse owners on the Isle of Man to only use one vet for their horseā€™s veterinary care.

Continuity of care: Seeing the same vet practice will help to build an accurate clinical history, allowing for a better understanding of any changes your equines may experience..

Effective long-term monitoring: Some of the horses we treat require long-term care. Having a consistent vet with a full clinical history on file will ensure that your horse receives the correct medication and testing they need to stay in good health.

Builds a relationship: a visit from our vets can be daunting. By building up a relationship with our practice, it can help to put you and your horse at ease ahead of the examination. This will also help to reduce stress if you require Strand Vets for an emergency visit.

Informed treatment advice tailored to your horse: Our vets will provide you with the most up-to-date, tailored advice for your horse. This can include legislation changes, new products available to help your equineā€™s healthcare and also lifestyle modifications backed up by the latest research.

To register your horse with our team, contact us today on 01624 835424.

Now we are in the depths of winter, we want owners to be vigilant against mud fever!

If youā€™ve not already seen, take a look at the article we shared last month on mud fever ā€“ including the symptoms to watch for and how you can help prevent it!

Worming resistance is a very frightening factor in the equine world. In the past 30 years, there has been no new wormers developed to target equine worms. It is our duty to maintain a good worming plan and use evidence based decision-making for the future of our horses here on the Isle of Man. šŸ‡®šŸ‡²

If we reach resistance on all available wormers then there would be no more horses on the Isle of Man.

Here at Strand Vets we follow evidence based tactics to reduce worm burden and slow down resistance for your horses.

Top tips to slow down resistance:
1. Test and worm only if needed
2. Pick poo from the pastures at least 2x a week
3. Keep your horse in the same paddock for a few days after worming
4. Donā€™t under dose. Itā€™s safer to go a little over the required dosage than under dosing.

Please spare a little bit of your time and watch this informative video about horse worming.

Speak to your yard/livery owner about testing before worming and if needed advice your equine vet on evidence based approach.

Whether you have bought a new horse, or have rehomed one, understanding any previous health issues or treatment they have received can help to make an informed decision about future veterinary care.

Ask to see a copy of the horseā€™s clinical history and donā€™t hesitate to talk to us at Strand Vets ā€“ we can help to interpret the records and then advise accordingly on any management changes.

We will also keep a copy of the medical history attached to your horseā€™s file so it can be easily accessed by any of our team, should your horse require emergency treatment.

* Managing laminitic ponies over winter *

With the fluctuating winter weather here on the Isle of Man, laminitic ponies may have flare ups during the colder months.

Many owners associate spring and the flush of spring grass with the onset of laminitis however, we see many cases of laminitis over winter and especially in horses who suffer from an underlying metabolic disease, such as Cushingā€™s disease.

In colder weather, your horseā€™s body will create more cortisol, a hormone that narrows the blood vessels, resulting in a reduced blood circulation to your equineā€™s hooves. This can cause pain with movement and will often be exacerbated when combined with frozen, rutted or bumpy ground conditions.

Itā€™s also worth noting that the frosty conditions and winter sun combined can also cause sugar levels in the grass to rise.

Both of these issues can trigger winter laminitis. You can help to prevent it by:

- Keeping your horse warm with rugs
- Keeping them moving to stimulate circulation to the hooves.
- You should feed a low sugar, low starch, forage focussed diet and ensure your horse getā€™s the minerals they need through a balancer or mineral supplement/lick.
- A deep bed to keep hooves off of cold concrete stable bases can help and in some cases, leg wraps would be beneficial.

Our vets can also help by advising on supplements and medications that could help your horse to cope with winter laminitis. Contact us today for more tailored advice or to book an appointment ā€“ 01624 835424.

Letā€™s talk paddock maintenance!

On the worldā€™s shortest day, itā€™s only right that we talk about a topic that will undoubtedly be getting on every horse ownerā€™s last nerveā€¦ MUD!

The evenings are set to start getting lighter, but it doesnā€™t change the temperature or how slogged the ground is at this time of year.

To avoid poaching your gateways and causing muddy spots in your field, try to limit turnout on boggy ground and if possible, change the layout of your field often to avoid gateways becoming ruined. If feeding forage when turning out, try to move where you place the hay or use a portable feeder.

If your gateways are particularly bad, tipping loose woodchip will help to provide a firmer base, however this is not a long-term solution.

We know on the island that Mud Fever makes up a large portion of the calls we receive at this time of year. Have a read of our latest article all about Mud Fever, the causes, the symptoms and how you can help to prevent it.

18/12/2023

Strand Vets Equine are proud to be the only equine practice on the Isle of Man who have access to a portable SAA machine and our inhouse laboratory means we do not need to send blood samples away from the island for testing.

What does SAA mean?

SAA (Serum Amyloid A) is an inflammatory and infection marker. Itā€™s a type of protein produced mostly in your horseā€™s liver. Healthy horses have very low levels of SAA whereas higher levels are indicative that your horse will require antibiotic treatment to tackle any infection/inflammation in the body.

By having these facilities available to vets ā€˜on the roadā€™, your horse will receive the accurate and prompt treatment they need to get fighting fit again.

Information to provide us in an emergency!

We know that anytime you call us with an emergency, tensions can be running high.

Often you are trying to ascertain how bad certain symptoms are, whilst also keeping yourself safe and talking on the phone.

Thatā€™s why our equine team have pulled together the following tips to educate owners on the information we definitely need before attending an emergency vet call.

1. Always provide your name, phone number and yard address. Often we have all of this on file but if youā€™re phoning off of a friendā€™s phone, or have moved without notifying us, then we need to ensure we can contact and find you.

2. A brief history of the current situation. For example, ā€œyou arrived at the yard to find your horse lying down in the stable pantingā€ or ā€œwe were out jumping around a cross country course when my horse hit his leg and fell over a jumpā€.

3. Suspected colic cases: itā€™s very useful to know if your horse has passed any droppings, whether theyā€™ve eaten/drank or had any management changes, plus the symptoms they are currently displaying. This will help us to determine how urgently we need to visit your horse.

4. Wounds/injuries: knowing where the wound is on your horseā€™s body, the approximate size, whether there are any foreign bodies present in the wound, how fresh it seems to be or whether it is bleeding will help us to determine how quickly we visit your horse and what advice we give for you to follow whilst our vet travels.

5. What facilities you have available for the examination such as if you have access to a stable with lights, do you have running water or if your horse turned out 24/7. This will help us to begin tailoring an examination and treatment plan before we even arrive at your yard.

If you have horses on the Isle of Man and are interested in the services that Strand Vets Equine can offer, contact us today on 01624 835424.

06/12/2023

Now that many horse owners will be worming for winter, this is a gentle reminder to our equine clients that worming product syringes must be disposed of appropriately.

Many of the chemicals used to treat your horse for a worm infestation, such as avermectin and ivermectin, are actually extremely toxic to dogs and dangerous to aquatic life. So much so that horses treated with ivermectin should not have access to surface water or water courses during their treatment. You should also be disposing of their faeces safely.

If you have any worming syringes laying around that need disposing of, our vets will happily take them away to put in our own pharmaceutical waste.

Letā€™s all help to keep the animals on the Isle of Man safe.
