🐴Equine uveitis is a painful and serious eye condition that can lead to blindness if untreated. It involves inflammation of the middle layer of the eye, which includes the iris, ciliary body, and choroid.
This condition can be caused by injuries, infections like leptospirosis and Lyme disease, or the autoimmune disease Equine Recurrent Uveitis (ERU), also known as "moon blindness." ERU is a major cause of blindness in horses worldwide and can lead to complications such as glaucoma and cataracts.
Regular veterinary check-ups, including measuring intraocular pressure and ultrasound, are crucial to detect any damage such as retinal detachment. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent permanent damage and help protect your horse’s vision.
Watch for signs like squinting, tearing, sensitivity to light, and a cloudy cornea, but in some cases, there are no outward signs until significant damage occurs.
Early intervention is key to preventing long-term issues and ensuring your horse stays healthy and comfortable.
At Strand Vets Equine, we are equipped with all the necessary tools to ensure early detection of uveitis in your horse, providing prompt and effective care.
