🐕HEATSTROKE IN DOGS🐕

We've been banging on about this for years! HEATSTROKE is a MEDICAL EMERGENCY! Fortunately, now more and more professionals are communicating the same message!

Whilst the need for rapid cooling with COLD water (1-15°C) has been recognised for decades in equestrian and human medicine, the dog world has lagged behind, and very poor information still circulates. e.g. "cool the paws", "cover with wet towels", "avoid cold water as it will cause shock"

THE KEY MESSAGES ARE............

💦"WET THEN VET"💦

💦"COLD WATER IMMERSION" (1-15°C)💦
(If you can't immerse, keep pouring ANYTHING COLD over the dog - hose, soft drinks, milk, etc)

💦Dogs die of heatstroke because they were NOT COOLED QUICKLY ENOUGH, NOT BECAUSE THEY WERE COOLED!

♨️RISK FACTORS FOR HEATSTROKE IN HOT WEATHER♨️

♨️Large dogs
♨️DOUBLE-COATED breeds
♨️Brachycephalic breeds
♨️June, July, August (UK)
♨️Exercise, being outdoors, left in cars

EDIT: - If a dog is PANTING, it's struggling to control its body TEMPERATURE! 💦HOSE IT TO COOL IT DOWN!💦

❤️PLEASE SHARE - Spread accurate information; potentially save a dogs life!❤️

If you don't believe me, look at the research: Beard S, Hall EJ, Bradbury J, Carter AJ, Gilbert S, O'Neill DG. Epidemiology of heat-related illness in dogs under UK emergency veterinary care in 2022. Vet Rec. 2024;e4153. https://bvajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/vetr.4153

With the weather heating up, we might start to see more buzzy friends around so it's important to know what to do if your little one is strung🐝

If your dog was stung in the mouth (we all know they love to try catch them) it's important to contact your vet practice immediately! However, not all stings need to be seen, and most stings can be dealt with at home. So what do you do?

Quickly remove the sting using a credit card to scape it out, scape from below the venom sac and don't squeeze or pull the string out. This can release more venom and prolong the irritation.

Hold a cold clean tea towel against the sting to reduce the swelling. Ice is good to soothe the site but be careful not to shock your dog with the sudden tempature change

Some stings can result in an allergic reaction so it is improtant to contact your vet practice if you start seeing signs of an allergic reaction (see our previous post)💙

🐾✨ QUALIFICATIONS - DID YOU KNOW? ✨🐾

Not all cat groomers are created equal! 😺✂️ Before booking your kitty in for a pamper session, it’s super important to check if your groomer is actually qualified 🧐📜

In the UK, recognised qualifications for pet grooming are from:
🎓 City & Guilds
🎓 IPET Network

These aren’t just pretty certificates – they mean your groomer has trained properly in things like feline behaviour 🐈‍⬛, safe handling 🧤, skin & coat health 🧼, and how to keep your cat calm & comfy 😽💗

🐾 A diploma from a grooming school without these certifications does NOT mean someone is a qualified groomer ❌ It might sound official, but it doesn’t meet the industry-recognised standard. That’s like getting a gold star sticker and calling it a degree 🎖️😅

💸 Yes, qualified groomers might charge more than someone without training… but you’re paying for:
✔️ Peace of mind 😌
✔️ Safety & welfare first 🏥
✔️ Knowledge that could prevent injury or stress 💔
✔️ A properly pampered, happy cat! 🛁🐾

Unqualified groomers? They may not even know how to spot signs of distress or medical concerns 😿🚫 It’s just not worth the risk.

At AristoCat Care, I take your cat’s wellbeing seriously — because they’re not just pets, they’re family 🏡🐱💕

Top Tip Tuesday 😊- Feeding before grooming or exercise

Thinking of feeding your dog before their grooming appointment?
You might want to hold off just a wee bit…

Just like us, dogs can feel queasy when they’ve eaten right before something active – and grooming is no exception. From baths and blow dries to standing on the table, there’s a fair bit of movement involved.

Here’s why a full tummy can cause trouble:
• Risk of nausea or being sick, especially during drying or handling
• Tummy upset from nerves or excitement
• Discomfort lying on their side or back if they’re feeling full
• Gastric Torsion – a condition called gastric torsion (especially in deep-chested breeds) where the stomach twists after eating followed by activity. It’s rare, but it can be life-threatening. Another cause of gastric torsion can be once a day a feeding.

The same goes for walkies – it’s best to leave at least an hour or two after eating before heading out for exercise or bringing them to the salon.
We always want your dog to feel safe, settled and comfy throughout their groom or day to day excercise
A calm tummy = a smoother experience for everyone.

Keep an eye out for grass seeds. After your dog has been in a greasy area, check ears and between the pads and toes especially. But a good brush over is a good idea as these are very pointy and sharp, and can embed themselves in the skin or be inhaled easily.
