Post surgery Rest

Having spoken to many of our customers who are in this situation, we understand how stressful & challenging it can be to offer a dog adequate enrichment and stimulation without using physical exercise as an outlet.

We hope our mental enrichment ideas help some dogs and owners out there who are currently caring for a poorly pooch. 💛

🎆 🎇🎆Firework Night 🎆🎇🎆
Helpful Tips to keep your furry friends calm and confident.

🙋🏻‍♀️Dogs are all unique some don’t bat an eye at fireworks others more noise sensitive and anxious loath them and some will happily watch through the window.

😌 How you act can have a huge effect so try to act calm positive and confident.

🐾 Put into positive practice the tips below during the daytime way in advance of the main night. A sudden change in your behaviour at the time of loud fireworks could trigger a negative response.

⛺️ In advance of the night Make up a den safe space using your dogs bedding or favourite blankets and cushions that have your scent on can help comfort your dogs and gives them a place to retreat as and when they choose to. (Don’t force a dog into a Den/safe place and definitely do not shut them in if using a crate)

⛺️ + 🐟 🍗 Once you have made a Safe Cosy Den start to put high value treats just in front of entrance and let your dogs investigate at their own pace if they look confident put one just a inch inside, go slow to build up confidence. Praise how clever they are and then see if they want to take a special longer lasting treat or chew toy to settle in their with.

👀 Keep a very close eye on them especially if they are wearing a collar incase gets caught! Never leave them alone, even if they are not bothered by them. It only takes one ridiculously loud bang to spook any dog.

🦮 Walk them early. Make sure microchip details are up to date with current address and dogs ID tag is securely fitted and has your telephone no. And surname and home address so they can be returned quickly.

🐕‍🦺 It’s advisable to keep dogs on a lead, long line or retractable lead for extra security around this time of year. Fireworks unfortunately are set off even in broad daylight. Unfortunately this time of year there seems to have dogs run off from being spooked by a random loud bang.

💧 Go out in garden and stay with them when they need a relief break, don’t force them out. Toilet training can always be positively reinforced again later if your dogs too scared to go out for relief break.

🐶 Feed them early before dusk.

🧠 Play brain games for mental stimulation to tire them. You could do food search earlier for meal time. Or hide around your kitchen floor or use dog food puzzles

🦴 🐶👅 Chewing and licking is really calming and mentally stimulating too. Stuff high value treat in a kong or spread something your dog likes on a licki mat. Natural long lasting chews are a great way to occupy your dogs.

🏠 Lock windows and doors and secure the garden. Shut curtains if flashes can spook them. Some dogs don’t mind watching with you but make sure they are always safe, happy and secure.

🐶 For dogs who are more sensitive ⬇️

🌿 Some dogs need a bit of herbal calmers to take the edge off.Valerian liquid is fast acting again try it before it’s needed. It works for some dogs but not all. Always ask your vet if your dogs really noise sensitive and do this as much in advance as possible some herbal calmers and anxiety medication take a while to actually work, some may need weeks to have a positive effect.

🐴 Horse wrap bandage or anxiety wrap/coats can help. Again start putting it on them in daytime before the night so they doesn’t associate it with things they fear. And use treats when introducing.

I love tea! T for totally awesome! Camomile tea for anxiety, bathing eyes, cleaning grazes, and for diarrhoea (never give chamomile to cats), nettle tea for itchy skin. Just two amazing teas!!

Pop the tea bag or loose tea in a cup, add boiling water and pop a saucer on top. Allow to brew for 20 minutes. And once cool you can use it! Black tea is also good for bathing eyes

You can’t hurt and could help. Bathing eyes with tea alongside vet medication can really aid healing. Just give it at least 30 mins between bathing and using eye drops to avoid washing drops out.

When we found out our dog has hip dysplasia we later carpet tiles and large off cuts of carpet on laminate hallway floor and kitchen. Rubber back rugs are good so are yoga mats but may need extra double sided tape check out Canine Arthritis Management shop for their special non slip tape etc.
