Thank you for all of the likes and shares, but due to other career opportunities I am no longer offering any services 🧡

03/01/2023

Happy new year everyone. I am no longer taking any bookings for dog walking, but I can still try to accommodate anyone for pet visits and small animal boarding. I am not currently licensed to provide home boarding, nor do I provide over night house sitting.🧡

It’s been a busy week in clinic! I saw a lovely young spaniel on Monday who ticked all the cannabis toxicity boxes. As she was walking she was constantly leaking urine, she was uncoordinated when walking, she could barely stay awake and was leaning all her weight on the vet nurse as I drew blood.

Fortunately her symptoms were fairly mild in comparison to some and with a bit of supportive treatment she went home at the end of the day.

I did ask the owner to walk the entire walk they’d done together prior to the onset of her signs, and that’s how we were sure this was a drug toxicity.

Also I had a smell of her breath to see if I could smell cannabis, but just typical doggy breath! I suspect she had only a little.

The Veterinary Poisons Information Service and Animal PoisonLine are a fantastic resource for both vets AND owners and pet professionals. It’s a good idea to have their number handy at the very least.

To learn more about toxins and in fact many other important dog related health issues check out my course complete canine health and first aid. It’s all video based! https://www.animalloveonline.co.uk/courses/complete-canine-health-first-aid-course22

Compassion fatigue. Have you heard of it?

Do you suffer from it?

Having spoken to people in the pet grooming world many allow it to creep up on them.

The issue being, seeing lots of pets in really bad states due to owners allowing the pets coat to get really matted.

Seeing this repeatedly year after year trying their best to educate the owners who just don’t listen pet groomers can get frustrated and angry about what they are seeing.

Maybe the compassion fatigue is from seeing poorly pets every day and there just isn’t anything you can do for them. Or making house calls and seeing poor living conditions for the pets.

As a Pet Professional you do your job because of the unwavering passion you have for animals and making their lives the best they can be.

But do you ever talk about how you feel? Do your friends and family understand how this can make you feel?

What would they say if you mention compassion fatigue?

Members of Care of Pet Professionals can be put in touch with professional therapists and counsellors who can help you talk things through. Maybe intervene before you feel the need to leave your industry.

The funding we raise through membership, sponsorship and donations helps us provide financial support for our members to access these services.

If you run a business, what would it mean to you to be able to refer an employee to counselling if you see compassion fatigue set in? How do you deal with it?

We set up Care of Pet Professionals because we know you care for animals and we want to care for you.

Good morning, thanks for all the recommendations, please let me know if you’d like a chat about how I can help you in anyway. I‘ve had a few meet and greets and it’s been lovely to meet people that are as passionate about their animals as I am. I am really flexible and I am more than happy to provide an ad hoc service. Something to consider with the Christmas and New Year period around the corner. 🛍🛒🎁🎉🧡

It is that time of year again when many animals, not just our pets, but wildlife and farm animals may suffer the consequence of the bangs and flashes.

I shall add a few tips aside from the destressing options, for those with specific health problems.

Dogs with breathing difficulties who are frightened should be provided with cool flowing air. Avoid food as heavy panting may cause them to inhale the food especially with the conditions listed in the post. Although many scared dogs would not be interested in a treat.

I know I go on about being able to do a basic health check on your dog, but it really is extremely important! Changes in pulse rate can be due to many things, stress, anxiety, pain, heart disease (just to mention a few).

You should record what is normal for your dog at rest. The rates listed below can indicate an emergency and should never be ignored. In fact all changes should be checked out, but these rates can be seen in a variety of emergency situations.

Come and learn lots about your pets and those you look after with me, Dr Sophie Bell. Vet and qualified dog groomer writing and teaching content to pet owners and professionals.
