Anaesthetising our own! 😍

This is Sarah our RVN's cat Bea, she's 14 years and had a scale, polish and dental assessment due to gingivitis of the gums above her upper molars. 🦷

This maintenance should hopefully prevent more serious gum disease which would result in her needing them removed later in life.

Dougie - consumer of socks!

Dougie was a little poorly recently, and presented to us with a reduced appetite and vomiting. Earlier that week, Dougie had sneakily got into the laundry basket and there was potentially some missing clothing! We took some x-rays and there was a suspicious amount of content in the stomach which was consistent with a possible obstruction!

At Vale Vets we have endoscopic equipment and vet Ana opted to do an endoscopic assessment of Dougie's stomach contents and was able to retrieve a huge sock and a piece of underwear that Dougie had consumed! Successful retrieval endoscopically meant that Dougie ended up avoiding a more invasive surgery, and his recovery was very quick and painless!

Here you can see Dougie after waking up from the anaesthetic, the x-ray that highlights the enlarged stomach with foreign body content, and the offending items that we removed. We have since seen Dougie and we are happy to report that he is fully back to his normal self, and was wagging his tail and enjoying much fuss from the vet!

Lots of dogs can find the laundry basket very intriguing. Socks, underwear, baby clothes etc can get consumed and end up causing problems! Dougie was lucky as he didn't end up needing a big surgery. We recommend making sure your laundry basket, and any socks are out of reach of your furry pets do avoid accidents happening.

Wildlife - Bert the Baby Seagull!

We often get birds and wildlife brought into us due to being injured or unwell. In most cases, there is not much more we can do other then end their suffering humanely.

However, occasionally we are able to trial rehabilitation and release!

This is a little baby seagull that was brought into us last week. We have started him on some medication, which he has responded well to. We hope to be able to rehabilitate and release him!

Here you can see him enjoying some Pilchards food after his initial assessment and medication.

Summer BBQ corn on the cob hazard! *Warning contains surgery photos*

Scully the 11 year old, Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever was hospitalised recently after going off her food, vomiting and feeling very sorry for herself. X-rays revealed she had eaten something which had resulted in a blockage of her small intestine.

Scully had surgery performed by vet Greg and nurse Sarah to remove the offending corn on the cob from her very bruised intestines. She's recovered brilliantly, this is her smiling at her post op check recently.

Remember to bin those corn cores this summer ☀️ 🌽

Microchipping: one tiny chip for cats, one giant leap for their safety 🐱

It will become a legal requirement in England to have cats microchipped this June, with owners potentially facing a £500 fine. Some cats love to roam and can get lost, others might be stolen, and a few, unfortunately, may even end up in car accidents. Taking this simple step will give you the best chance of being reunited with them. Other reasons to microchip your cat before the deadline:

😺 You’ll enjoy peace of mind
😺 In a vet emergency, a microchip may save your cat's life
😺 A microchip may help in ownership disputes
😺 It’s a simple and quick procedure
😺 Reduces rescue centre populations

Award Winning Vets! 🏆

Earlier this year we were delighted to find out that we had been awarded 'outstanding' in two RCVS-accredited awards.

The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), register veterinary surgeons and veterinary nurses to practice in the UK, and regulate their educational, ethical and clinical standards.

The awards demonstrate where practices provide services above and beyond the stringent standards of accreditation. Practices can be designated as ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding’ within each Award much like the Ofsted accreditation, and re-assessed every 4 years to ensure they are meeting the requirement of the Award(s) on top of their rigorous accreditation assessment. We received 'Outstanding' for:

🖐️ Client Services Small Animal Award - given to practices who demonstrate high levels of care for their clients. This award comprises of one module, Client Experience, encompassing practical and behavioural steps that practices can take to improve Client Service.

🔬 Diagnostic Service Small Animal Award - recognises the practice’s services in terms of the use diagnostic of techniques, such as radiography and ultrasound, and the training and safety measures in place for these. It also includes a module on Laboratory and Clinical Pathology which assesses the practice in terms of its use of laboratory technology to allow diagnostic tests to be carried out and reported promptly. This will help the practice support or rule out potential diagnoses in a number of clinical areas, which underpins the effective and efficient treatment of the animal.

We are super proud of the whole team for their hard work in achieving ‘Outstanding’ in these two awards and couldn’t be more chuffed! 👏🎉🎉

A game of catch leaves poor Henry tongue-tied!

As vets we feel we have seen it all when it comes to strange dog mishaps. But Henry surprised us all at Vale Vets when he came in with his tongue stuck firmly inside a ball.

During a game of fetch he had somehow managed to get his tongue trapped inside a tiny hole in the side of the thick rubber ball. His owners tried to free him but his tongue was wedged in and starting to swell. Vet Robert Hallworth and nurse Leanne Cornish sedated him and managed to cut the ball to free his tongue. It was a little tender afterwards but there was no lasting damage so hopefully Henry will already be back to playing fetch again already!
