🏆Well down to Paul and Monty on passing the Novice Petgundog assessment.

✅Monty is a cross Labrador/golden retriever, his training was going well last year until he had to have an elbow operation. This put him back a few months.
We had to go back to encouraging him to retrieve as he was ether reluctant to retrieve or if he did he ran around with it.

Paul has spent his time doing his homework and today it all paid off 👏

🍾What a day of achievements 🍾💪🏼👏🏆🏵️
Well done too:-

🏆Lisa who is on her second dog with us now, she passed her Beginner Petgundog assessment with a distinction.
A livley fizzy ESS who we are also training up to compete at working tests.

🏆Becky and Josh who passed The Beginner Petgundog assessment with a distinction.
This has been tough for these guys with Sprockets lack of retrieve drive but the hard work has paid off. He is mainly a pet but hope to work him when he is ready.

🏆Becca who passed The Beginner Petgundog assessment. Bramble her WCS who is a fidget pants and not had a great retrieve drive. So it has meant lots of homework to achieve this. Bramble is a pet mainly but will be worked when ready.

🏆Sean and Pixie who passed The Beginner Petgundog assessment with Nancy the Labrador who is very playful and can be a handful at times. Nancy is a pet but will be worked when ready.

🏆Finally Steve and Maya an ESS who passed his Advanced Petgundog assessment with a distinction. Maya is a fidget pants and previously had no interest in retrieving. Next step training up for working tests.

👏Every one of these clients have worked hard to get to where they are now. These assessments are harder than your average dog trainer’s assessments. When you pass you know it’s because you have achieved this and reliably. A credit to you all for doing your homework, it’s been a joy watching you all develop.

⚠️You have a spaniel and have no control?

⚠️You have a spaniel and have no connection?

⚠️You have a spaniel and have no recall?

⚠️You have spaniel and it loves to chase animals, leaves, butterflies?

✅If you own a spaniel you have to understand they to want to run around sniffing at a million miles an hour and love tracking scent.

This is because it’s been bred into them to track and find game.

✅Before spaniels were bought as pets that were not going to work, this breed was bought and bred to find game for the table.

If you had a high drive spaniel who was eager and keen to find game then it was great and you were on to a winner.

✅However those who bought these and shot over them for the table would have understood that these spaniels need to be trained to keep close. If they range to far away from you then if they flush any game the game could be out of shot range and the whole process would have been pointless and waste of time.

So those who worked their dogs trained them to hunt close and quarter left and right of themselves making sure the dog didn’t miss any ground.

✅The second thing to consider is that these dogs were bred to have a high drive/desire to find game. However once they found it they would then chase it if not trained. This is also pointless as the game can’t be shot of a dog is bolting off after it and scaring more game away whilst running around out of shot range.

So that is why these dogs were also trained to stop to shot/flush/whistle. To make sure there was a safe shot and the dog could mark the game down.

✅Now the process of training the quartering and stopping on game can take time. You needed a biddable dog who wanted to work with you. The training of these steps enhanced the bond between owner and dog. They ended up working in harmony together and as a team.

✅The reason spaniels are considered great family pets is because they were bred to be keen, eager, wanting to please and full of life and this is what most people want in a pet but they forget these traits were bred into the dog so it would compliment the drive also bred into them.

✅When you have spaniel and you dont intend to work it, just remember that your dog doesn’t understand it isn’t going to be worked. All the above instincts are there still. If your dog flashes game 50m away then it will keep running that far from you to achieve this. It will also start chasing because you have not trained the stop but yet you still have the high drive! Then you have a self employed spaniel who is self rewarding and has no connection with the owner!

✅Understand the breeding of your dog, no problem if you don’t want to work it but understand why your dog is doing what it is doing and respect it’s breeding by doing some basic close hunting and stops to gain control.

⚠️The last thing you want is to be driving a Ferrari with no steering wheel or brakes!

✅Here is young Thor learning to stay close whilst exercising his body, nose, brain…

✅We had a 12 hour round trip today, leaving at 4:30am! We entered Stiora into Leconfield working spaniel clubs Novice trial near Chelmsford.

☘️Stioras first run immediately had her on a multiple flush and a decent retrieve. Then some more hunting with another flush.

☘️Her second run was her best, her style and pace kicked in and she hunted lovely and fast. She had a flush and a retrieve, enroute to the retrieve more birds flushed and she was steady. Another lovely retrieve in the bag💪🏼

🏆She won making her up to an Open dog💪🏼
🏆She also got an award for best retrieve💪🏼

✅So grateful to Leconfield Working Spaniel Club, keeper, land owner, helpers and guns today. It was a lovely Trial and well worth the trip 🏆

Today we entered two of our dogs into Midsussex working spaniel clubs novice trial in Kent. Oak sadly got knocked out for a mistake (more training required) but his daughter Stiora’s story Stiora managed to smash a very honourable 2nd in her first ever trial. Super pleased with her in what was a difficult trial and packed with birds!

💪🏼Finding Balance in Dog Training: The Key to Success and a Stronger clearer bond!

✅Southdowns Dog Services, we know that balanced training is essential for a happy and well-behaved dog. It’s not just about praising your dog when they do something right but also about providing clear guidance when they’re wrong. Just like us, dogs learn through a combination of positive and negative feedback.

✅By saying “no” and correcting your dog when they ignore or make mistakes, you help them understand boundaries more quickly, especially as dogs learn fast through negative and positive consequences of actions. This makes training fairer for them—they’ll know exactly what behaviors are expected. When they understand both sides, their learning accelerates, and they become more reliable companions and trust your leadership and decisions.

✅Real balanced training isn’t about being harsh—it’s about being clear, consistent, and fair. Your dog will grow more confident when they know what earns praise and what actions lead to consequences.

✅Ready to find that balance? Want to fully train your dog and learn how to train with and without food rather than bribe? Are you only half training your dog and not sure how to stop bad behaviour or get away from being a food machine to your dog?
