Sadly we have had a deceased cat brought into the practice found on someone's driveway in Granada Road in Southsea. Unfortunately the cat had no microchip so we are unable to trace the owners but he is a male unneutered ginger domestic short hair that we think could be between 6 and 10 years old. If anyone thinks this could be their cat please contact the surgery,. We have taken a photo of it for identification purposes but for obvious reasons we aren't putting it on social media.

Thank you for reading.

For your information:

IMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING REPEAT PRESCRIPTIONS

VETERINARY SURGEONS ARE LEGALLY REQUIRED BY THE ROYAL COLLEGE OF VETERINARY SURGEONS (RCVS – THE REGULATORY BODY FOR THE VETERINARY PROFESSION IN THE UK) TO PERFORM A CLINICAL ASSESSMENT OF AN ANIMAL EVERY SIX MONTHS TO BE ABLE TO DISPENSE PRESCRIPTION ONLY MEDICATION (POM-V) WITH THE EXCEPTION OF PARASITE TREATMENT, WHEREBY THEY ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE A CLINICAL ASSESSMENT EVERY TWELVE MONTHS.

IN SOME CASES, THE VETERINARY SURGEON WILL NEED TO PERFORM A CLINICAL ASSESSMENT MORE FREQUENTLY.

ADDITIONALLY, PRESCRIPTIONS OF CONTROLLED DRUGS ARE HEAVILY REGULATED AND CAN ONLY BE DISPENSED FOR A MONTH AT A TIME.

WRITTEN PRESCRIPTIONS ARE DISPENSED AT THE VETERINARY SURGEON’S DISCRETION AND INCUR A CHARGE.

FROM 1ST SEPTEMBER 2023, the RCVS has issued new guidance on prescribing prescription-only medication.
The full guidance can be found on: https://www.rcvs.org.uk/setting-standards/advice-and-guidance/under-care-new-guidance/

The new guidance requires that a physical examination of the pet must be performed every time any antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals and parasiticides are prescribed. This includes topical preparations such as ear and eye drops, and all prescription flea/worm/tick products.

The guidance is an important step towards ensuring responsible use and reducing the veterinary impact on the wider issues of global antibiotic resistance.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR YOUR PETS?

What this means in practice is that your pet will need to come in for an in-person consultation every time:
* We need to prescribe medication for an ear or eye infection (most contain antibiotics)
* We need to prescribe antibiotics for any skin problem, even if it’s a chronic problem.
* We/you decide to change from one flea/worm/tick product to another.

*We suspect a urinary tract infection (urine analysis/culture alone are no longer sufficient)

* We suspect a gastrointestinal infection (faecal analysis/culture alone are no longer sufficient)

* If you need prescription flea/worm/tick products and your pet has not been seen for 12 months

🐾PSA🐾

Along with the sunshine ☀️ comes lots of new growth, so we urge owners to be extra vigilant when walking their dogs and to look out for grass seeds.

These pesky seeds are often found in long grass and get stuck to the fur of our friends and can cause some nasty issues if they travel into their paws, noses, ears and eyes! Look out for the warning signs of grass seeds, avoiding walking through long grass and if you think your dog has a grass seed call us on: 02392 861122 and we can arrange to see them.

A little PSA for our little furry friends 🐶🐱 and their pawrents 🐾

With the glorious sunshine and warmer weather we’ve been having we urge everybody to be careful during this heat - Although the sun is lovely and we want to share it with our companions, the heat can be incredibly dangerous to our four-legged pals. With the outside temperatures soaring we want to remind everyone about the real dangers of heat exhaustion and heat stroke:

With Easter fast approaching the Easter Bunny will be here in no time! Although the treats he brings are lovely and yummy for us humans, they can be dangerous to our little furry friends. Our dear friend Kipper found this out yesterday evening. He just couldn’t resist the temptation of chowing down on some freshly baked hot cross buns made by his mum that morning! However, hot cross buns with raisins and chocolates aren’t good for our animals and are toxic. Kipper is on the mend, after a quick episode of some induced sickness here, which just so happened to be on some cleverly placed Tesco adverts…
