A bit busier this month at the kennels but great that we saw more dogs with up to date microchip details as this really does help us to reunite them with their owners quicker. We have noticed that the rescue centres we work with are extremely busy so if you are thinking of getting a dog please adopt! Email us for a list of brilliant rescues.

Foster carer Sue’s 4-year-old Pembrokeshire Corgi Ffion joined their fostering team just after lockdown. Sue shared: “When Ffion was a puppy, our foster child helped me train her. She has been very popular with all our children, bonding with them. She gives them pleasure, a sense of belonging helping to care for her, and to feel a part of the family.”

Foster Portsmouth will be marking Foster Care Fortnight (12- 25 May) with its spring drop-in foster carer recruitment event on the morning of Saturday 24 May between 10am-1pm at the Holiday Inn, Farlington.

Betsy and Henry live with Foster Carer Steve and make a huge difference for the young people they care for. Steve says "the dogs are a good ice breaker when children first visit. Also, having a dog requires undertaking lots of jobs which children can get involved in like feeding and walking."

Betsy is an 11 year old Cavapoo. She has been fostering with me from the start. She was rehomed from another family when she was 2. Betsy prefers it when older children come to stay as she likes a quiet house and companionship. She does however like it when I read to younger children and will always come and listen.

Henry is an 8 year old Cavapoochon. He has been helping for 7 years, he came from another family when he was less than a year old. Henry loves it when younger children come to stay as he likes cuddles, games and fuss.

Tell us and Portsmouth why your dog would be a great Foster Carer…

April was a great month with only 5 lost dogs coming into kennels and all of them were reunited with their owners within 24 hours! But we kennel stray dogs for other local authorities as well as helping and supporting our local residents with dog issues so we still had plenty of work to do!

Lola lives with Foster Carers Ruth and Glen and makes a huge difference to the young people they foster for Foster Portsmouth

Foster carer Ruth shared: “Lola is the most amazing dog with all foster children. She takes her role as ‘nanny’ very seriously and likes to comfort any new, younger children who need the extra nurturing, helping them feel safe and secure when they need it most. She will put any younger children to bed if she senses they need a little cuddle and someone to be by their side. She adores children and playing with them.”

The 13-year-old boy fostered by Ruth and husband Glen for over three years added: “Lola is ‘flooffy’ and cute, she likes to give loads of cuddles and is playful too, and she makes me happy if I feel sad. When I first lived here she would come and give me a cuddle as I tried to get to sleep as I wasn’t used to sleeping in a room by myself.”

Ruth continued: “Lola is a fantastic football player, taking the role of defence, and is not scared of going in for a tackle to get the ball. She also plays cricket where she fields and takes the ball back to the bowler, and will be ball girl in a game of tennis.”

“She is an incredibly intuitive and gentle creature, who is adored by all our foster children. She is always there to greet you as you walk in the door and make you feel at home, and put a smile on your face. She is never grumpy or in a bad mood, and brings the household together to make us a family.”

Portsmouth Stray Dog Kennels

Stray dogs can cause many problems such as causing serious road accidents or biting a child, as well as being stressful for the owner of the lost dog.

Our job is to help the public by taking in or collecting stray dogs that are found in Portsmouth, we assess the dog's condition and care for them in our modern kennels facility until contact with the owner can be made. Most of our dogs are successfully returned to their owners, but if no owner comes forward then we also work hard to re-home the dogs in our care.
