Staff dog Ida has been in to see locum Vet Tom today as she cut her leg and it was swollen today. She’s been examined and will go home with antibiotics and anti-inflammatories. Luckily Ida has pet insurance as she’s very accident prone!

Does your pet suffer with a skin condition? Scratching, scabs/spits, flaky skin, bad skin smells, greasy skin/coat, red or thickened areas of skin? Coatex is available over the counter from us and is an essential fatty acid combined with omega 3 and 6. Coatex is available in capsules or pump the capsules cost £17 for a box of 60 and the pump is £27.54 for 65ml or £43 for 150ml.

We also have Coatex shampoo (dogs only, not for use in cats) medicated (£27.25 for 500ml) is an anti-bacterial, anti-fungal which can be used in malassezia cases and aloe and oatmeal (£13.75 250ml £24.75 500ml) is a soothing shampoo both help with soothing and reducing itching.

♥️ Please remember on and around Valentine’s Day that chocolate is is toxic to dogs, cats and rabbits.
Lillies, among other flowers are very toxic to cats and can cause renal failure, they can also cause stomach upsets in dogs.
If in doubt, a quick internet search of any flower will let you know if they are safe for the furry loves in your life as well as the human ones!
Owners can call the Animal Poison Line directly on 01202 509000 for advice in the event of possible ingestion. ♥️💚

Following on from our post last year regarding changes to how vets are allowed to prescribe some prescription medicines. Such as antibiotics and some medicines that treat parasites (like fleas and worms).

Most of these changes have already come into effect. However, from 12th January 2024, some parasite products (such as flea and worm products) can only legally be prescribed for 12 months and at the time of a clinical examination by a vet.
This may mean you need to come in for a consultation with a vet to ensure we can dispense your usual product.

These changes are beyond our control and have been implemented by the RCVS to fight drug resistance and protect the environment.

Any patients without a prescription (including those not seen in the last 12 months) will need a vet check that will be charged at the reduced fee of £30 and includes up to 3 pets seen at the same appointment.

URGENT APPEAL: We’re currently seeking responsible and loving forever homes for our beautiful XL bullies: Roy, Morris & Roxy
As these are special cases given the upcoming change in government legislation (the dogs will have to exempted before 31st December 2023), we’re offering comprehensive support packages to the adopters, including ongoing advice, muzzle training and priority neutering and spaying. All the dogs come insured and the provider has committed to providing ongoing health insurance beyond the breed re-classification if the new owners keep up insurance payments.

*Update* I have now applied for the exemption certificate and been issued with it. It was easy to apply online as he was already castrated and microchipped*

I wanted to write this post as I am sure some of our clients will be effected by this too. With the XL bully ban coming into force on 31st December 2023 my cross breed who came from the dogs home as a cross staffy in 2014 will be affected and it looks like I will have to get an exemption certificate for him. This means declaring him as an XL bully because he meets some of XL bully breeds type criteria. He meets the minimum type measurement of 20 inches to the withers (initial key factor). Because of the shape of his head and other criteria such as coat type, wide chest, level topline I just can't take the risk of him being taken by an enforcement officer.

Hector is a family pet and a big softie. The first thing I had to do was take out banned breed third liability insurance - this felt so wrong as he isn't a banned breed but due to his description fitting an XL bully type he will be classed as a banned breed. I paid £25 to join companion club with Dogs trust (see link) which gives the third party liability insurance for banned breeds. Tomorrow I will pay £92.40 for the exemption certificate fee. I will also need Hector's microchip number, and proof he is castrated. Then I will apply for exemption. By doing this it means Hector will need to be muzzled in public and never be allowed off the lead, which makes me feel sad - but its better than him ending up back in a kennel on death row.
Hector is already neutered, but that is another of the criteria. the British Veterinary Association (BVA) have written to the government to ask them to extend the neutering deadlines.

I will post again when I’ve completed the exemption certificate.
