BUBBLE & SQUEAK'S SUCCESSFUL NEUTERING
Ferrets Bubble & Squeak came in to our Goosnargh branch earlier this month for neutering. After a successful operation and lots of cuddles from our staff they recovered well at home.

WORLD SPAY DAY 2025 🤍
World Spay Day is an annual event dedicated to promoting the spaying and neutering of pets and stray animals—vital procedures that help control the pet population, reduce the number of animals in shelters, and prevent health issues in pets.

This year, we’re sharing Luna’s spay operation to provide a step-by-step look at the procedure and help demystify the process. 👀

TEDDY'S TTA ORTHOPEDIC SURGERY 🐶
Teddy’s cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) failure was treated surgically in October last year by vet Lisa, using a Tibial Tuberosity Advancement (TTA) technique. The CCL is similar to the ACL in humans and is crucial for stabilising the knee joint. When it tears, it can cause pain, instability, and difficulty walking.

The operation works by redirecting the force generated by the large quadriceps muscles to compensate for the failed cruciate ligament. This is achieved by cutting free, and moving forward, the part of the tibia (the tibial tuberosity) attached to the quadriceps muscle.

This technique - developed almost 50 years ago for the use in human knees by Dr Maquet, a Belgian orthopaedic surgeon - helps restore stability and allows the dog to regain mobility.

This was followed by a 4-month rehabilitation program, developed by RVN Emma, to ensure proper healing and strength recovery. Teddy had regular visits to see Emma so that she could check progress and adapt his program accordingly.

We’re very pleased to report that Teddy officially got discharged earlier this month after his operation and 4-month rehabilitation! Well done, Teddy! 💚

EAR MITES – WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW!
This video shows live ear mites from an in-house swab taken from a dog who had lots of brown waxy discharge in their ears!

Ear mites (Otodectes cynotis) are tiny parasites that can affect dogs, cats, and ferrets. While some pets may not show any symptoms, others can experience itchy, red ears with brown discharge.
👀 In some cases, these mites can be seen by the naked eye as tiny, moving white specks!
⚠️ They spread through direct contact with an infested animal, often affecting puppies and kittens.

The good news? They’re easily treatable with prescription medication, and we’re pleased to say that this dog is now fully clear.

📞 If you notice any signs in your pet, book a check-up with us today.

A MEMORABLE SCHOOL TRIP TO OAKHILL VETS, GOOSNARGH
Last week, we were delighted to welcome our first-ever school group to our Langley Lane practice! The children from St Wilfrid's enjoyed an exciting and educational visit, which included:
✔ An engaging talk about caring for animal by our vet, Lisa
✔ A behind-the-scenes tour of our small animal and equine facilities
✔ Hands-on, fun practical activities
✔ A goody bag and activity pack to take home!

👉 If your school or club would be interested in a similar visit, please get in touch at [email protected]. As a busy veterinary practice, spaces are limited, but we’ll do our best to accommodate your group!

Here’s what the teacher from St Wilfrid's had to say about their visit:
"The teachers and children had a wonderful time at Oakhill Vets. For some pupils, it was their first-ever visit to a veterinary practice, giving them the perfect opportunity to ask questions and learn from the experts. The children loved exploring the facilities and taking part in practical, fun activities. The staff were friendly, supportive, and encouraged active participation throughout. After the trip, the pupils could clearly explain the importance of caring for animals and the environment."

BRYN'S FRACTURED TEETH REMOVAL 🦷
Bryn, a 6-year-old dog, was brought in by his owner due to bad breath and reluctance to let anyone look in his mouth. Upon examination at Oakhill, it was discovered that Bryn had several severely fractured teeth on the right side of his mouth. A fractured tooth exposes the sensitive pulp inside, which is not only very painful but poses the risk of infection. To help Bryn, pain relief and antibiotics were started, and he was scheduled for surgery to remove the damaged teeth.

Under general anaesthetic, vet Kate found that Bryn had fractured three upper teeth in a row, including his big carnassial tooth. These three teeth were extracted surgically in order to ensure all roots were fully removed. This involves cutting and peeling back the gingiva (gum tissue) and removing bone to expose all the tooth roots so they can be easily extracted. The bone is then burred smooth so there are no sharp areas and the gingiva is sutured with dissolvable stitches.

Fractured teeth can occur from trauma (like rough play with other dogs) or from chewing on hard objects like stones, bones, or antler chews. As a general rule, if you can’t make an indent in a chew with your fingernail, it’s too hard for your dog’s teeth and could cause damage.

📞 If you have concerns about your pet's bad breath, or notice a change with your pet's mouth contact us to book a vet appointment.

HOMELANDER USES ONE OF HIS NINE LIVES 🐈
Homelander, a one-year-old cat, was rushed into our Goosnargh branch after being hit by a car outside his home. Following a thorough examination by our vet, he was treated with antibiotics and painkillers, and his wound was carefully cleaned. Thankfully, the injury turned out to be superficial, and we’re delighted to report that Homelander is now recovering brilliantly.

IMPORTANT UPDATE TO OUR VACCINE OFFERING FOR DOGS 🐶
Currently, if your dog receives an annual vaccination, they will be protected against two strains of Leptospirosis. To provide even greater protection, we have upgraded to an improved Leptospirosis vaccine which protects against four strains.

Here’s what this means for you:
✔ At your dog’s next annual booster appointment, they will receive the new Leptospirosis vaccine. A second free of charge vaccination will be given 4 weeks later.
✔ If your dog’s vaccinations have lapsed and you would like to restart their course to ensure that they are fully protected they will be started with the new vaccine.

When you receive your reminder that your dog’s annual vaccination is due, please plan to return for a second appointment 4 weeks after the initial vaccine. This extra step will help ensure your canine companion stays happy and healthy all year round. Your dog will then return to their usual annual vaccination routine.

👀 Don't forget that a vaccination appointment is much more than just a quick injection! Our vets and nurses will want to know how your pet has been, if you have noticed any changes and conduct a full physical examination. They will ask questions about how they have been behaving, any issues, and about specific topics such as their eating and drinking habits. Don’t be afraid to ask any questions, as they are there to listen to your concerns or worries.

If you’re not sure when your pet had their last round of vaccinations, get in touch and we can check for you.

APRIL'S PREVENTATIVE CARE 💚
Whippet April came in for her routine health and weight check-up, along with getting her prescription for essential flea, tick, and worm prevention. Here's why these visits are important:
✔ Health monitoring: Regular check-ups ensure that any potential health issues are detected early. Changes in weight, for example, can be an early indicator of underlying problems such as metabolic disorders, dental issues, or gastrointestinal concerns. Early intervention often leads to better outcomes and reduced treatment costs.
✔ Weight management: Keeping an eye on a pet’s weight is vital for preventing obesity or underweight conditions, both of which can affect quality of life. Obesity can lead to joint problems, heart disease, and diabetes, while being underweight might indicate malnutrition or other health concerns.
✔ Preventative care: Fleas, ticks, and worms can cause serious health issues if left untreated. Preventative treatments help to keep pets protected and reduce the risk of spreading parasites to other pets or humans in the household. Prescription parasite control ensures that the treatment is effective and suited to your pet’s specific needs, based on their weight, health, and lifestyle. Over-the-counter treatments may not be as reliable or safe.

Regular veterinary care isn’t just about addressing problems; it’s about proactive care to help pets live their best lives. By ensuring your pet receives these checks and treatments, you're giving them the best chance at a long, healthy, and happy life.

Signing up to our 365 Care Plan makes preventative care easy and cost-effective.

PETS OUT OF HOURS VETERINARY CARE ⏰
One question that we get asked a lot is: Why do you not provide your own pets out-of-hours service?

At Oakhill Vets, your pet’s wellbeing is our top priority. To deliver the highest standard of care, day or night, we’re also dedicated to looking after the wellbeing of our staff, ensuring they have a work-life balance and a manageable workload.

Due to an ongoing national shortage of vets, we currently cannot staff our own out-of-hours service without compromising the quality of care during normal hours. Partnering with Vets Now ensures your pet has access to exceptional round-the-clock care while allowing our team to remain well-rested and fully focused during regular hours.

We’re proud to work alongside Vets Now and believe this partnership provides the best care for your pets at all times.

DAVE THE DACHSHUND 🐾
Miniature Dachshund Dave visited our Goosnargh branch last Friday for his castration operation and milk tooth removal. Post-surgery, Dave was sporting his Oakhill medical pet shirt, and here's why we love using these:
✔ Shields the surgical area and stitches from licking, biting, or scratching, which aids in quicker healing.
✔ Prevents infections by keeping the surgical area clean and free from bacteria.
✔ A comfortable alternative to the traditional e-collar (cone of shame), giving pets more freedom to move and rest.

Dave’s recovery is in full swing, and he’s already back to being his adorable self! 🐶💙

MEET THEODORE 🐰
Theodore, the Continental Giant, came in to our Lytham Road branch for his vaccinations last week. Here's he is with his lovely owner 🤍.

Vaccination is an essential part of keeping rabbits healthy, as it helps protect them from life-threatening diseases. We recommend that all rabbits - even those living indoors - are vaccinated.
