It’s Veterinary Receptionist Awareness week and we are celebrating our amazing receptionists and all the hard work they do every week. We are so lucky to have a team of incredible ladies who go above and beyond to help our clients. Tracey, Poppy and Saibh! 💕

But they're not just receptionists. For some they are the friendly face they see first when they enter the practice, but for others they're the shoulder to cry on during stressful times waiting for their pet to come out of surgery. Their smiles are as big as yours when your fluffy family member bounds out to greet you after discharge and their hearts break too when the news isn't good.

We hope you appreciate them as much as we do! Let us know in the comments below what our receptionists have done for you and let’s make this week really special for them ✨✨

🦷✨Dental care starter kit £8.91✨🦷

Looking after our dog’s teeth is just as important as looking after our own. Giving their teeth a good brush a few times a week will help keep their mouth healthy. If you’d like to purchase one of our dental care starter kits to get going with your pets dental routine just get in touch!

How do I clean my dog’s teeth?

It’s a good idea to start brushing your dog’s teeth when they’re young. They quickly get used to it as part of their routine. It’s never too late to start, though, and older dogs will soon get used to a good scrub!

Take things slowly and get them used to having their teeth cleaned over a few weeks:

1️⃣Let them taste their new toothpaste so they think of brushing their teeth as a treat, not a chore. Allow your pet to lick the toothpaste from your finger. Repeat a number of times.
2️⃣Get them used to having their mouth touched. Smear your index finger with toothpaste and then gently slide it into your pet’s mouth, letting it glide over the outer surface of the teeth and gums. Only go as far into the mouth as your pet is comfortable. Repeat a number of times.
3️⃣Gradually move on to using a brush that fits over your finger. This will get your pet used to the feeling of their teeth being brushed. Repeat a number of times.
4️⃣When your pets comfortable and ready, use a proper pet toothbrush. The longer handle will help you reach all of their teeth. Prepare the toothbrush with water and toothpaste. Let your pet lick some of the toothpaste off the bristles. Start to gently brush the canine teeth (the ‘fangs’) only, using an up and down motion, with the brush angled towards the gumline. At this stage avoid the front teeth (incisors) as this is the most sensitive area in the mouth. Repeat a number of times.
5️⃣ The back teeth . As before - start by brushing the canine teeth, then slowly move along to the teeth behind them using a circular motion. Only go as far as your pet is happy with. Repeat a number of times.
6️⃣ All teeth. As before, start by brushing the canines, then the back teeth and then gently lift the upper lip under their nose to reveal the incisor teeth. Many pets are sensitive in this area so proceed very gently, brush the front teeth using an up and down motion. Gradually build up the amount of time spent brushing. For maximum protection tooth brushing should be performed daily.

‼️ It’s important to use pet toothpaste as it is safe for your dog to swallow.‼️

✨🦷 Dental Health Awareness Month 🦷✨

Why is it important to keep your pets teeth clean?

Just like us, animals can get rotten teeth and gum problems. If your pets teeth aren’t kept clean they could become covered with plaque, this causes gum inflammation. If your pet has gingivitis, the edges of the gums may look red or darker pink than the rest of the gums and they may bleed when your pet chews on something or has their teeth brushed. Over time, the gums shrink back away from the plaque, but the plaque keeps creeping up towards the gumline. Plaque produces the hard material we call tartar, or dental calculus. Gradually, the gums recede so much that the attachments between the tooth and its socket break down and this gum disease leads to loose and diseased teeth, pain and discomfort.

There’s many things you can start doing when your pet is young or after a Scale and Polish procedure to help prevent tartar build. Take a look a the poster below for further information. You can also book in with one of our Veterinary Nurses if you’d like more detailed advice! 👩🏼‍⚕️👨🏻‍⚕️

🦷Dental Health Awareness Month🦷

Dental disease is extremely common in cats and dogs and if left untreated can cause serious issues for your pet's health beyond just their mouth! 🩺🤒

Some signs your pet has dental disease could be: smelly breath, red or inflammed gums, change in eating habits and even weight loss.😷

With dental disease, prevention is always better than cure. It's important that dental hygiene becomes part of your pet's daily routine and so there are are a wide range of products that can help combat the early stages of plaque build-up including getting your pet used to teeth brushing.🪥

If you are concerned, why not book in for a dental check with one of our Registered Veterinary Nurses? We also offer a scale & polish service with dental X-rays. This enable us to clean your pets teeth and fully inspect the oral cavity for any signs of disease or potential concerns.🩻👨🏻‍⚕️

Beautiful Bella has lost two kilograms on a weight loss journey with Wakefield Vets4Pets – and owner Hayley says she's much more active, playful and affectionate as a result. "She just seems generally less grumpy as well – she probably felt how we do when we've overindulged!"

When Bella came in for her booster vaccination a year ago the team noted that she was overweight and would need to slim down to help her live a long and happy life. Since then the three-year-old house cat has been put on a special diet and she's now lost a third of her weight. Hayley said: "We're incredibly grateful to the team at Vets for Pets. They've given us some great advice and tips to keep the weight down. They are so approachable and we've never felt judged by them."

Head veterinary nurse Jess said: "Bella has been on her weight loss journey for over a year now and she's seen once a month for basically Waggy Weightwatchers as we call it. The owners have stuck with the plan very well and took note of everything we have told them, which is great. A 2kg loss is quite a substantial loss for a cat, so she's done really well."

Ten-month-old Filemon is on the mend after he fell behind a wardrobe and fractured one of his front legs in three places.

He was taken to the specialist orthopaedic team at Vets4Pets Cross Hands in Llanelli by his owners Kasia and Andrzej where he had surgery to repair the bone with implants. The main recovery barriers for Filemon were possible nerve damage, and keeping him quiet long enough to give his bone and wound time to heal – which veterinary nurse Rebecca says is no easy task for a cat owner. She said: "Thankfully, with the help of his diligent owner and plenty of the right medication, Filemon is recovering well and has full range of motion in his leg."

Kasia said: "We'd like to say a massive thank you to the Vets for Pets team for doing an amazing job to get Filemon back on his four legs! After surgery Filemon was in a crate for six weeks which wasn't easy for him being such a young and playful kitten. It's now been two months since the surgery and he's recovering really well. He's enjoying himself again just like before the accident."

Meet Jimmy, thanks to his microchip, he was reunited with his family after 2 years!

In 2021, Jimmy was suspected to be involved in a road traffic accident in which his owners were told he didn't make it. After straying for 2 years, a member of the public brought him into Doncaster Vets4Pets where our team scanned him for a microchip. After a quick call to his owners, our team were able to reunite him with his owners. We do love a happy ending💚
