❗MAKE SURE YOU KNOW THE LAW❗

According to the RAC, one-third of UK drivers do not comply with this law & do not restrain their dogs while driving. But not doing so can result in a FINE UP TO £5,000! Which is a pretty big price to pay if you are not aware of the law.

Drivers breaching the rule are deemed to be driving carelessly which means they can be hit with three to nine penalty points & receive a fine of £1,000 that can go up to £5,000 if taken to court.

Rule 57 in the Highway Code.
“When in a vehicle, make sure dogs, or other animals are suitably restrained so they cannot distract you while you are driving or injure you, or themselves, if you stop quickly. A seat belt harness, pet carrier, dog cage or dog guard are ways of restraining animals in cars.”

🚗As stated, even when restrained, ensure your dog cannot cause a distraction to the driver. S0, where possible, your dog should be restrained in the back of the car (not sitting up front). NB: While having a dog sitting in a front seat is not illegal, you may still encounter a fine, and it is not the best practice for safety standards.

🐾The rule clarifies that a seat belt is not the only option for restraining your dog; cages, carriers and guards are also an option. However, we find that a dog seat belt is the easiest, space-saving solution that ensures you can take your dog with you even at short notice! It’s also a suitable option for all sizes and breeds.

Did you know this? Make sure to share so others are aware of the law 🚓

You love your dog? But you have to work? ....

Why not introduce your dog to Sandyforth Doggy Day Care where they can make new friends and play in our purpose built unit with natural real grass, double fenced field!

Taking your dog to doggy day care can offer several benefits for both you and your pet:

1. Socialisation: Dogs are social animals. Day care gives them the chance to interact with other dogs and people, helping them develop better behaviour and reduce anxiety or aggression.

2. Exercise: Active play and supervised activities help your dog burn off energy, which is great for their physical health and can prevent destructive behaviour at home.

3. Mental Stimulation: Engaging environments with toys, games, and new experiences keep dogs mentally sharp and reduce boredom.

4. Relief from Loneliness: Dogs left alone for long hours can become stressed or depressed. Day care provides companionship and attention during the day.

5. Professional Supervision: Trained staff can manage group play safely, administer medications if needed, and watch for signs of illness or distress.

6. Convenience for Owners: It’s a reliable option if you have a busy schedule, need to travel, or are renovating your home.

🌞🚨HEATSTOKE KILLS DOGS 🚨🌞
It doesn’t always have to be ‘hot’ for an animal to develop heatstroke.
🐾Exercising excessively in warm weather, or being left in a warm or humid environment that is poorly ventilated can cause animals to quickly overheat.
❗Avoidance is always best, but it’s important to know the signs of heatstroke so that you can treat your dog appropriately and know when to seek veterinary attention should they be unfortunate enough to suffer from it.
😟If you are concerned that your pet is overheating, you should act immediately, as heatstroke can rapidly become a life-threatening emergency;
❗We recommend to “cool first, transport second” as the immediate first aid response for dogs with heatstroke.
❗Owners should also seek veterinary advice as soon as possible.

🐣🐰HAPPY EASTER FROM ALL OF US AT DOG FIRST AID 🐰🐣

Here’s a last reminder of the dog related Easter dangers to make sure your fluffy friends are safe this Easter

CHOCOLATE 🍫
Over the Easter weekend, many of us host Easter egg hunts or exchange chocolate Easter eggs that are brightly coloured. These will look interesting and smell delicious to your dog. Chocolate is poisonous to dogs, so please ensure you keep it well out of reach. If you find your dog has eaten some chocolate, you may need to make an emergency trip to the vet.

HOT CROSS BUNS 🍞
Hot cross buns contain sultanas or raisins. Much like chocolate, sultanas, currants, raisins and grapes are also poisonous to dogs. Even a single raisin can cause kidney failure. If your dog eats a hot cross bun, please seek veterinary advice.

ROAST DINNERS 🍗
Although many of us enjoy a traditional roast dinner at Easter, some ingredients served up with a roast dinner aren’t safe for your dog to eat and can cause abdominal pain. Small bones are also dangerous for your dog. Please continue to feed your dog their normal diet. If you want to treat your dog, we recommend you feed them raw carrots.

SPRING FLOWERS 🌷
Easter is the perfect time of year to brighten up homes and gardens with spring flowers and are therefore common gifts from family and friends at Eastertime. Unfortunately, spring blooms can be toxic for dogs if consumed, so it’s important to make sure your dog can’t access these specific areas of your garden. Here are six common springtime bulbs that can be dangerous to dogs.
• Bluebells • Daffodils • Hyacinth • Iris • Lilies • Tulips

WATCH OUT FOR WRAPPERS 🍬
Always make sure that plastic wrappers and other packaging is thrown, recycled or moved to a safe place out of your dog’s reach. If a dog was to chew or try to eat the packaging it could cause an obstruction to their airway or internally after digestion.

⚠️BLUE GREEN ALGAE⚠️

Blue-green algae is a term used to describe a group of bacteria, called cyanobacteria. They are not actually algae, but the organisms got this name because they often give the appearance of algae when they clump together in bodies of water.
Blue-green algae is most common in non-flowing, fresh water such as lakes and ponds.
Certain conditions such as hot summer weather can cause it to thrive and grow rapidly, forming a ‘bloom’ of blue-green algae on the water. It can also be seen during other times of the year.
Some types of blue-green algae contain toxins that can are highly poisonous and often fatal to pets. It can also cause illness in people if touched or swallowed.

🚨Call your vet immediately if you think your dog has swallowed water containing blue-green algae. The sooner they receive treatment, the higher their chances of recovery. 🚨
