This month is Walk Your Dog Month! Walking your dog may seem like a chore, especially during the cold and dreary days of winter, but we cannot overstate the health benefits of regular exercise for your pets and you. πŸ§‘ 🐢

From providing enrichment and exercise for our pets πŸ• to getting us out of the house more 🏞️, taking the time to walk our dogs is known to have real effects on improving our mental and physical well-being.

For January, we encourage owners to get into the habit of walking their pets and then make Walk Your Dog Month every month!

Many pets love a good challenge and pet food puzzles are a great way to introduce fun mental stimulation, especially to food motivated pets or pets who struggle with eating too fast.

There are a ton of snuffle mats, stuffed toys and puzzle feeders that we are sure your pets will enjoy!

Let’s talk about going to the pet dentist! 🦷 How often do you bring your pets for a routine dental exam?

Dental and periodontal disease are extremely common in pets! If left untreated, these can:
🐾 Cause a lot of pain,
🐾 Lead to loss of teeth;
🐾 Cause infections to spread to other organs like the heart.

You can avoid this with a good daily tooth cleaning routine, treats that help with tartar build-up, and regular visits to us for a comprehensive oral exam and deep clean.

Worried about your furry friend’s dental health? Don’t hesitate to give us a call! πŸ“²

🦜 Parrots really are fascinating birds that are intelligent, comical and affectionate. It is important to feed them the correct diet to keep them happy and healthy. A parrot’s diet should consist of at least 40% fresh fruit and vegetables as well as dried pellets and mixed seeds.

Organic fruit and vegetables should be offered - these will provide essential vitamins and minerals for our feathered friends. Examples of fruits and vegetables that can be offered include the following... 🍎πŸ₯πŸ‘πŸ₯•

Do you have any leftover antibiotics you need to dispose of? πŸ’Š

Antibiotics shouldn’t be placed in household waste or flushed down the toilet due to the risk of antibiotic resistance in bacteria living in animals, plants and the soil once they get to the environment.

The best thing to do is to return them to us, or take them to your local pharmacy, where they can safely be disposed of for free.

Hamsters love to make tunnels and burrows - that’s why most hamster cages come with external tubes that they can sleep and explore in.

It’s important to offer plenty of bedding for your hamster to burrow into, as well as having enough depth to their enclosure to allow them to be able to dig down and make a den.

Does your hamster love to dig? 🐹

The Government has announced plans to ban the XL bully "type”.

From 31st December 2023, it will be illegal to breed, sell, advertise, exchange, gift, rehome, abandon or allow XL bully dogs to stray in England and Wales.

From 1st February 2024, owning an XL bully in England and Wales will be a criminal offence unless you have a Certificate of Exemption for your dog.

There will be rules that anyone who owns an XL bully – or any dog that meets the legal description of an XL Bully, whatever their breeding – must follow, including:
πŸ‘‰ Ensure your dog is microchipped and that the contact details are up to date
πŸ‘‰ Get public liability insurance
πŸ‘‰ Neuter your dog
πŸ‘‰ Apply for a Certificate of Exemption
πŸ‘‰ Your dog must be kept muzzled and on a lead in public places at all times, and in a secure place at home with no chance of escape

You can find more information about this ban on this link πŸ”— https://www.gov.uk/guidance/prepare-for-the-ban-on-xl-bully-dogs

Christmas is nearly here ! πŸŽ…β„πŸ—πŸ¦΄πŸ«πŸ·

Here is a reminder of some the most common Christmas hazards for our pets!

πŸ— Christmas food
Sweets, cakes, pies, and biscuits can be particularly dangerous as these often contain xylitol, raisins, sultanas and chocolate, which are toxic to pets.
We also recommend avoiding feeding your pet with leftovers - onions and garlic are also toxic to pets, and our Christmas meals are often too fatty, which can easily upset their tummies.
Please be careful with bones as well, as these can be a choking hazard, cause constipation, or perforate your pet's intestine if swallowed.
πŸŽ„ Christmas decorations It is wise to keep your pet from chewing on:
⚑ Fairy lights, due to the risk of electrocution
πŸŽ€ Ornaments, as these can cause bowel obstructions or contain antifreeze inside
πŸ’ Toxic plants such as lilies, poinsettia, holly and mistletoe
Keep your pets safe this Christmas and don't hesitate to contact us if your have any concerns!

Do you struggle with getting your pet in the carrier when you need to bring them to us for an appointment? πŸ€” Here are three tips to get your cat to like their carrier:

😺 Clean it after getting home from the vet
😺 Leave it out in a place where your cat likes to be, for instance, a higher place in the home
😺 Put some of your cat’s favourite treats and toys inside so they’ll create a positive association with the carrier

Would you know if your pet had worms? 🐢🐱Even the healthiest-looking pets can carry worms, so it is essential to worm your pet regularly to keep them at bay. If you are unsure, we can advise you on the type of treatment, the frequency, and method to use for your pet. 🩺

If you notice any of the following in your pet, they may have worms:
🐾 Lethargy
🐾 Coughing
🐾 Exercise intolerance
🐾 Poor body and coat condition
🐾 A 'pot-bellied' appearance, especially in puppies and kittens

Be worm-wise and protect your pet from an infestation. Be sure to regularly treat your pet for fleas and ticks as well as worms.

Bad weather doesn’t mean you and your four-legged friends must stay locked up inside! However, there are a couple of extra things you might need to keep an eye on:

❄ If your pets like being outside or out for walks, don’t forget that they can get uncomfortably or even dangerously cold without protective clothes if there is snow, low temperatures or a windy day.

❄ For adventures near frozen water or deep snow, always keep pets on a lead and don’t let them get too close to these hazards.

❄ Once you get home, ensure your pets are dry and check their feet for clumps of snow or any rock salt that might have gotten stuck to their toes.

πŸŽ…β„οΈβ˜ƒοΈ

Grapes and their dried fruits such as raisins, currants and sultanas (whether raw or cooked) are known to cause fatal kidney failure in dogs - so keep Christmas treats such as mince pies, puddings and cakes out of reach.
Even ingestion of just a few grapes is enough to cause severe illness so always consult your vet if your dog ingests any amount.

With around eight out of ten of the UK’s cats and dogs suffering from dental disease, we cannot stress the importance of regular dental checks enough. 🐾🦷 So tell us, when did your pet last have a dental check?

Do you remember the last time you and your pet came over for a visit? If the answer is no, we invite you to check when their vaccinations are due! (If the answer is yes, please humour us and check anyway 🀭)

Vaccinating your pet is one of the simplest preventative procedures in veterinary medicine! With one injection only (or more, depending on which boosters are needed), we can protect your pet against several infectious and dangerous diseases.

For dogs πŸ•, vaccines can protect against parvovirus, distemper, infectious hepatitis, parainfluenza, and leptospirosis.

For cats 🐈, vaccines can protect against feline calicivirus and herpesvirus (cat flu), feline panleukopaenia, and feline leukaemia.

For rabbits πŸ‡, it is important to vaccinate against myxomatosis and viral haemorrhagic disease (1 and 2).

These are general recommendations, with your pet’s vaccination schedule benefiting from adjustments depending on their needs and lifestyle. Talk to us!

With the Christmas season in full swing what happens if your pet gets their nose into your alcoholic tipple? 🍷🍸🍾πŸ₯ƒ
Alcohol should not be consumed by pets as their livers are not equipped to break down alcohol as easily as human livers are. We all know how awful we can feel after a heavy night, but our pets are much more prone to alcohol toxicity with potentially life-threatening consequences.
Alcohol toxicity can also occur from ingestion of unbaked bread dough - as the yeast ferments in their stomach, alcohol is created and is rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream.

Did you know that Guinea Pigs do not come from Guinea and aren’t even related to pigs? So, what’s with the name? There are a number of theories regarding β€˜Guinea’, including being imported via New Guinea as well as being able to purchase a Guinea Pig for one Guinea, which was a common unit of currency in 16th Century England.

The sounds that Guinea Pigs make are often β€˜wheeks’ and β€˜eeks’ which some people say resemble the sounds of a pig. Guinea Pigs actually belong to the rodent family and make brilliant family pets. Show us some photos of your Guineas in the comments. πŸ“·
