BOAS assessment with a Kennel Club approved BOAS Regional Assessor

*available for registered clients and non- clients *

Dafne Veterinary Hospital is one of only few practices across the country who has a Kennel Club approved BOAS assessor- our vet Emilia has recently completed her training in Respiratory Function Grading scheme created by The Kennel Club and University of Cambridge.

What is BOAS?

Dogs with wide and flat- shaped heads are said to be brachycephalic. The may have excessive soft tissue in the nose and throat that obstruct the airways and cause noisy and heavy breathing. It is a progressive disorder that may affect some dog’s sleep, ability to play and eat.

What is Respiratory Function Grading Scheme?

The scheme is designed to assess British Bulldogs, French Bulldogs and Pugs for a breathing problem- Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome.
The assessment is meant to give the breeders and owners advice if their dog is affected by BOAS and guidance how to lower the risk of creating affected puppies and if their dog would benefit from BOAS corrective surgery.
It is recommended that dogs are assessed from the age of 12 months and it is repeated every 2 years for their lifetime as BOAS is a complex and progressive syndrome.

Please call to book the consultation : 01843 260278
or send an email: [email protected]

💥Firework season is fast approaching - it can really help our furry friends if we are prepared to prevent their anxiety as much as possible🐶🐱🐰🐹🦜💥
* Give your pet somewhere to hide - blanket covered crates/safe space/cardboard box. Your pet can take themselves to this space and hide if they wants to
* Walk your dog in the daylight hours to prevent being outside when the fireworks starts
* Provide food puzzles/toys to help distract your pet
* Keep cats indoors during the night
* Close curtains/windows to help muffle bangs
* Bring small pets inside if possible, or cover half of their outdoor area with a thick blanket to muffle banging sounds
* Provide small pets with extra bedding for them to burrow into
* Use pet remedy/Adaptil/feliway calming sprays/plug ins
* Speak to us at the vets if your pet needs extra medication to help prevent anxiety

💥Please contact us if you need further advice💥 ☺️✨

It is now compulsory for all owned cats in England to be microchipped, making it more likely that lost or stray pet cats are reunited with their owners and returned home safely.

This includes cats that usually only stay indoors.

All keepers must ensure their cat is microchipped before they reach 20 weeks of age and their contact details stored and kept up to date in an approved pet microchipping database.

⚠️Awareness post ⚠️

Sadly there have been a few confirmed cases of lungworm in the area and we want to spread awareness of what this condition is

So what is lungworm? 🐶🐱

- It's a condition caused by a parasitic worm that travels around your pet's body through their blood vessels and can cause haemorrhaging in parts of the body.
- The parasite that causes lungworm is different in dogs and cats (mainly Angiostrongylus vasorum in dogs and Aelurostrongylus abstrusus in cats)
- Generally, cat lungworm is rare and symptoms are usually less severe compared to dogs

How can my pet catch lungworm? 🐌💧

- Pets contract the parasite by eating the larvae found in infected snails and slugs or their slime trails. Feline lungworm can also live inside birds and small mammals that have eaten an infected slug or snail
- In dogs, mild cases of infection can remain unnoticed, however after about 28 days the worms will start to produce their own larvae which can lead to more serious symptoms
- It's important to note that dogs cannot pass the disease directly between each other, but they can pass the larvae in their faeces which then infects more slugs and snails, so the disease can spread rapidly
- Lungworm larvae can also survive for a short time off their hosts (slugs and snails). So larvae can also be found in water bowls (particularly those outside) where slug or snail contamination might not be obvious

What are the symptoms of lungworm? 🩸🐶

- Coughing
- Breathing problems
- Not wanting to exercise
- Minor injuries might bleed for longer
- Loss of appetite
- Weight loss
- Seizures
- It can cause haemorrhages in the lungs, liver, intestine, eyes and spinal cord, but also pretty much anywhere in the body

How can lungworm be prevented? 💊

- If left untreated, it can be fatal in some cases, but the good news is that lungworm is usually treatable
- The best prevention method is a regular antiparasitic treatment that contains an ingredient toxic to lungworm
- But it helps to also make sure your pet does not eat slugs or snails and to change the water in any outdoor water bowls frequently

📞 If you are unsure your pet is up to date on their worming treatment or if your wormer covers lungworm infection please call us on 01843 260278 and we would be happy to assist
