At this time of year when bees and other insects are in crucial need of food and shelter leaving your lawn to grow for a few weeks before cutting can make a huge difference to biodiversity.

Please consider whether could be something you can take part in to do your bit for nature ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒพ๐ŸŒบ๐Ÿฆ‹๐Ÿž๐Ÿ๐ŸŒŽ

No Mow May is Plantlifeโ€™s annual campaign calling all lawn owners not to mow during May. Let your wildflowers grow this summer.

Have you considered your pet's 'carbon pawprint'? ๐Ÿพ
An average sized dog produces emissions equivalent 770kg of carbon dioxide per year - approximately equal to a flight from London to Kuwait! The average cat is responsible for about 310kg of emissions a year.
The main contributing factor is diet due to the high emissions from meat production. Raw and wet food diets are far more carbon-intensive than dry food which produces only about 13% the amount of carbon emissions of most wet or raw diets.
We can all help reduce our pets' carbon pawprint by considering carefully what we buy them and feed them.
Swapping from wet or raw to dry food diets is a great start to cutting our pets' emissions and a lot of new low-carbon alternative diets such as insect-based, vegan or vegetarian are now becoming available.
It is key to ensure that any diet change you are thinking of making is nutritionally complete and suitable for your pet's individual health considerations. Our team are on hand to help advise if you're thinking of making an eco-friendly diet switch. ๐Ÿ™‚๐Ÿƒ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ’š

You may never have seen behind the consultation room in a veterinary practice.

So take a look at the work our vets and nurses do on the front line every day to look after animals in veterinary practices, hospitals, in the field and on call - so that they receive the best possible care.

Thanks to Molly Case for the poem you have written about our profession.

Do you know about the 3 'Rs' of sustainability? The Green Team here at YourVets Rayleigh are trying our best to:
- REDUCE the amount we consume as a practice by being conscious of what we use and whether it's really necessary - be that energy, water or physical items like medicines;
- RE-USE items such as washable kennel liners, theatre scrub hats and surgical gowns rather than opting for single-use disposable alternatives;
- RECYCLE all waste that we can including plastics, cardboard, paper, tins, cans and batteries.
Have you considered how you could use the 3 'Rs' to reduce your environmental impact? Let us know your tips and tricks in the comments! ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒณ๐Ÿƒ๐ŸŒโ™ป๏ธ

Have you considered your pet's impact on the environment? Working out your pet's 'carbon pawprint' is a great way to see where you might be able to make changes to lessen their impact. There are quite a few 'carbon pawprint' calculators out there to get you started, for example the calculator from ManyPets here:

Discover how many kilograms of carbon dioxide your pet produces each year, and compare it with your household emissions.

15/02/2024

From the 10th of June it is mandatory for cats to be microchipped from 20 weeks of age and details to be kept up to date on a pet microchipping database. Owners that are found to not have their cat chipped are then given 21 days to have one implanted or face a fine of ยฃ500.

Microchips are a safe form of permanent identification and we have been able to reunite many cats (and dogs of course) that have been brought to us by members of the public.

Microchips can be implanted easily and is painless. The procedure takes just a few moments. Details are immediately registered with a microchip database (via our computer system) and confirmation is sent to the owner via email. Any changes to the registered address or telephone number after the registration date is the owners responsibility. All the information on how to do this will be sent with the initial registration. We are happy to help with this process.

The fee for implanting a microchip is ยฃ17 and this includes lifetime registration. For our owners on our Healthy Pet Club scheme it's free. If you'd like to join the scheme we can organise this for you when you visit.

Our lovely veterinary nurses run clinics and are able to implant microchips. If you would like to bring your cat along, please give the clinic a call on 01268 745180.

This handsome boy is called Oz and he belongs to one of our nurses. He loves to wander and on his travels around the neighbourhood he often decides he's going to stay out. Oz having a microchip really does give peace of mind.

Thank you for your patience. We hope to have the issue resolved soon.

There have been a lot of concerns recently about the worrying effects of spot-on flea and worming treatments on the environment. This is something we are very aware of at YourVets Rayleigh and we are keen to help pet owners by providing advice on parasite treatment that is as safe as possible for both pets and the environment. Please do not hesitate to contact us to book an appointment with one of our nursing team if you would like to discuss parasite risk-assessment and alternative treatments for your pet, including oral formulations, and how best to minimise the impact your pet's treatment may be having on the environment. ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒณ๐Ÿพ๐ŸŒŽ

Did you know that we are a gold accredited Cat Friendly Clinic? This means that we have met the high standards of feline care set by the International Society of Feline Medicine.

We strive to ensure that your cat's visit to us is as stress free as possible. This includes having a cat only waiting room and hospital ward. Staff are trained to handle cats with minimal restraint and our feline visitors are always in control.

We are often repaid with head bops and purrs, which make our day.

If you'd like to find out more, please follow this link and we are always happy to answer any questions.
