XL Bully Ban Information

The government has announced that the XL Bully breed ban will go ahead in 2024. We know that this will be upsetting and confusing for a lot of people so here is some of the key information to be aware of. Full information can be found on the government website ‘Prepare for the ban on XL Bully dogs’.

From 31 December 2023 it will be against the law to:
- sell an XL Bully dog
- abandon an XL Bully dog
- give away an XL Bully dog
- breed from an XL Bully dog
- have an XL Bully in public without a lead and muzzle

From 1 February 2024 it will be a criminal offence to own an XL Bully in England and Wales unless you have a Certificate of Exemption for your dog.

To keep your XL Bully, you will need to apply for a Certificate of Exemption and your dog must be neutered, microchipped, on lead and muzzled in public. You will need to take out insurance via the Dogs Trust against your dog injuring people.

Neutering
If your XL Bully is less than 1 year old on 31st January 2024, they must be neutered by 31st December 2024.
If your dog is older than 1 year old on 31st January 2024, they must be neutered by 30th June 2024.

Key dates to be aware of:
📅 31st December 2023 - XL Bully dogs must wear a muzzle and be on lead in public. It is illegal to re-home, sell, buy or breed an XL Bully from this date.
📅 31st January 2024 - deadline for applying for a certificate of exemption
📅 1st February 2024 - it will be a criminal offence to own an XL Bully without a certificate of exemption
📅 30th June 2024 - XL Bullies that are more than 1 year old on 31st January need to be neutered by this date
📅 31st December 2024 - XL Bullies that are less than 1 year old on 31st January need to be neutered by this date

It is recommended to start muzzle and lead training your XL Bully ensure they can cope this this transition. For muzzle training information, go to the Dog’s Trust, Blue Cross or PDSA websites.

If you are thinking of adding a puppy to your family, please beware of unlicensed dog breeders.

Our licensing team carry out stringent checks and visits before issuing licences to dog breeders to ensure that the welfare of the dogs in their care is of the highest standard.

Unlicensed breeders are not subject to this scrutiny and, as a result, some of their dogs do not receive the correct medical care and are dumped when they can no longer provide litters. The puppies born can also suffer medical problems.

Help us to help dogs by doing some simple checks, or even better by using a rescue centre.

📜 Ask to see the breeder’s licence issued by the local council
💉 Ask to see the paperwork from the vet confirming the puppy has had its injections, health check and been microchipped
🐶 Ask to see the puppy’s mum. She should look clean, happy, alert and well cared for.
👀Observe the relationship between the mother and the breeder. They should be comfortable and familiar with each other
❌ Never buy a puppy at a location away from the breeder’s home such as a layby or a carpark

⚠️ DON'T LEAVE COLLARS ON ⚠️ a good friend shared a post with me about a dog wanting look out of the window at home and caught his collar on the radiator. Luckily owner was at home but this could have been a tragedy.

Every summer our officers are called to incidents where dogs/pets are left in hot cars 🥵

❌ It is never OK to do this to your furry friends, not even for one minute.... just don't.

If you see a distressed dog or pet in a hot car, call 999

Please do NOT walk your dogs today or let them stay outside in the garden for long. If the forecasts are correct, the temperatures we are set to experience over the next 24/48 hours, are lethal for ALL breeds of dog! Keep them inside, in as cool an environment as you can create (think fans, multiple water bowls, cold towels/cool mats for them to lie on etc)
Also, remember that sunlight☀️ is not the issue here, it’s TEMPERATURE that’s important, so even after the sun sets, it’s looking like the evening/nighttime temperature will still be well within the dangerous range for dogs!

It’s currently overcast and raining here….but look at that temperature! Still FAR TOO HOT for dogs to be out walking/running/exercising. This is a common mistake people make, assuming that just because it’s not bright sunshine it’s ok for their dogs to be out - it’s not! In fact it’s days like today, when humidity levels are very high, that dogs are most at risk. Don’t let your dog become a statistic, keep them indoors, keep them cool, keep them safe! ☀️ 🐶 🌡 😎
