Patches' owner brought her in for a vet appointment as she had been playing at home and had broken part of her canine tooth! She had some pain relief overnight and then came back the next day and went under general anaesthetic to have a dental.

We x-rayed the broken tooth to check for any fragments and ensured there were no roots left, then stitched the gum line back together. Unfortunately we did have to remove a few other teeth that were diseased, the remaining teeth were scaled and polished.

We saw her for her post-op check and are pleased her mouth is healing well and she's more comfortable😊

Wolf had a lump on his back for a few weeks which was growing so he came to see us to have it checked. With some antibiotics his lump started to go down and almost disappeared.

Unfortunately his lump began growing again so his owner decided they would like to have it removed.

We are pleased he is doing well in recovery and his wound is healing nicely!😁💗

Molly Cat came in for her cat spay last week. She is a very lovely, confident girl and enjoyed exploring around her penthouse suite in our cattery🏢

She has recovered well so far, but apparently hasn't been a fan of her medical pet shirt!😂

We are talking about Geriatric patients today!🐾🥰

As our pet’s get older, we may notice them slowing down or becoming less active than they used to be. Whilst it can be hard to see a beloved pet slow down, with the right veterinary care and support, we can make a huge difference to your pet’s life.

Senior dogs:
Small dogs: 10-12 years old
Medium dogs: 7-10 years old
Large dogs: -5-8 years old

Senior cats: 8-12 years old

Geriatric dogs: Small dogs: 13+, Medium dogs: 11+, Large dogs: 8+.

Geriatric Cats :13 years+

Tips for older pets:

- Visit the veterinarian regularly for check-ups (can be every 6-12 months) for routine health checks/vaccinations, this will help identify any diseases or age-related conditions.

- Diet: your pet may benefit from having a diet that is lower in calories as their energy output is reduced. They may also benefit from joint supplements to help with stiff joints/arthritis and improve general health.

- Exercise: for dogs this is ensuring they go on regular walks to get their muscles moving. For cats to encourage playing or going outside. Pay close attention to ensure your pet isn’t in pain or struggling to keep up. Shorter more frequent walks is better than long walks.

- Comfort: orthopaedic or supportive beds can provide extra joint support and relieve stress on muscles. Placing slip mats or carpet down can help with pets getting up and down and to prevent slipping. Additional equipment such as ramps can help pets get in and out of the car and onto sofas. [Poppy the spaniel is very nicely modelling her supportive bed]

- Mind: new toys and games will help to engage their brain, e.g. puzzle feeders, kong's and interactive games etc. Rotation of toys can help to prevent boredom.

If you would like to know more information about supporting your pet in their older age, please speak to one of our vets or nurses when you are next visiting. Otherwise call us on 0118 927 2999 for more information.

Mary has been a regular visitor to us in the past year.

She decided having one cruciate surgery just wasn't enough and wanted to come in to have her 2nd one done on the other leg in January!

We took some post-surgery x-rays (around 6 weeks post-op) to check her surgical site was looking good and everything was still in place.

As much as we love seeing her, we hope we don't see her again until her next routine appointment!😂

Lumps and Bumps!

Finding a lump on your pet can be worrying and you may be unsure as to what it is. Most pets will develop a lump on or under the skin at some point in their life, and some pets may develop several, especially into older age.

It is impossible to know for certain what a lump is just by feeling or looking at it. Many different types of tumour can look and feel identical, especially those that sit under the skin. Some lumps can be cancerous or they can just be lipoma (fatty) lumps. There are many types of lumps so checking them with one of our vets is important to start treatment early.

You can check your pet at home for lumps and bumps, we recommend checking regularly to pick up them quickly. For information on how to check lumps, please see the below:

What else could pet insurance cover?🐾🩺

Many owners think that taking out pet insurance is just about covering the cost of veterinary care. While that is important, a good policy will also cover you for some of the other unexpected costs of being a pet owner.

Remember not all pet insurance is the same! This is why it is a good idea to check the cover provided and ask if you will be paying more for claiming. It's important to find a policy that suits you and your pet's requirements.

Today is Walk Your Dog Day. Walking your dog every day is important for their physical and mental health!👣🐾

What physical benefits does walking give your dog?

- Weight management: it keeps the extra weight off your dog and helps to keep them fit and healthy
- Improved cardiovascular health: helps to improve circulation and lower blood pressure
- Stronger muscles + joints: regular movement helps keep joints and muscles in motion, this improves their function. Being sedentary for too long can weaken muscles and cause stiff joints.
- Stress reduction: walking helps release endorphins in the brain which helps release happy feelings

What mental benefits does walking give your dog?

- Mental health: walking your dog outside stimulates the eyes, ears and nose! Your dog will pick up lots of information and interact with the environment which is good for their mind.
- Valuable emotional time: time walking with your dog helps to bond your relationship
- Prevents mental frustration: tiring out on a walk prevents unwanted behaviours such as ripping up furniture, barking/whining etc.
