Cavalry Saddlery was formed in April 2010 as a direct result of my passion for horses in the military, in particular, the cavalry. This stems from my childhood in the 1960s when the Royal Horse Artillery was billeted behind my garden fence for a show. My brother and I used to go into the stables at around 7am in the mornings, with tea for the troopers, who were busy grooming their horses and clean
ing the leatherwork. I was fascinated by the striking uniforms and the beautiful horses. I have always enjoyed a challenge and since my childhood, have taken on projects from scratch and have made uniforms, head dress, even a full 10th Hussars Officers Uniform with 110 buttons on each of the jackets, and intricate gold embroidery work that left your fingers in tatters! In 1994, I got in contact with a guy trying to locate some half ball buttons for a Hussar Pelisse that I was making at the time. He was a founder of the '15th Kings Hussars', which is a British Napoleonic Cavalry re-enactment unit. He invited me along to see if I might like to join the unit. I had ridden as a child but it was many years since I had sat in the saddle, however, I was up for the challenge and with sabre and spurs, I passed my audition to join the Hussars. In 2009 I attended a Saddlery course and started making double bridles, surcingles, breast plates, head collars etc. I use only the best quality Sedgewick bridal leather and all items are hand made. I take great pride in my work and have received positive feedback from my customers as a result of this. Although I specialise in the Napoleonic and American Cival War eras, if you want something made to a quality befitting your horse, whether it be military or civilian, please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.
