Margot came in for her second teeth cleaning session, we worked on her back carnassial molars this time. You can see the difference in her gums alone from the first visit, using the ultrasonic toothbrush which helps to soften, lift and remove plaque, allows gums to heal tightly around the tooth making sure no bacteria can make its way through. Margot could benefit from one more session to make sure her gums are fully healed and remove the remaining staining and plaque, then top ups for her! She’s such a teeny little star considering the toothbrush is almost her size! 🌟

Caesar had a teeth clean last week. He’s one of my old grooming clients so it was such a blessing to see him and his lovely owners again. He had regular teeth cleans with his appointments in the past so we had been keeping on top of it, but this is just over 6 months build up which I think is pretty great! Anyone who knows me, knows I don’t do things half hearted and I absolutely love to learn. Hence why I am currently studying a Canine Nutrition Level 3 Diploma. 🎓
Since starting offering teeth cleaning in January 2023 I’ve been researching almost daily into the matter of pets dental health and why a massive 85% of dogs have periodontal disease by the age of three! 🚨
It just blows my mind how our dogs are plodding along with painful gums, loose teeth and bone loss. The mouth is the most important entrance to the body so this can lead to bacteria getting into the lungs, stomach and organs which can cause a whole host of problems! 🦠
This isn’t to shame anyone who may be in this position with their pet, we sadly live in a world where dental health is too often over looked by vets and there’s just simply not enough information out there, this is to try and raise awareness in hope that if we know better we will simply DO better. ❤️‍🩹

I am now on my last module of my canine nutrition course and have decided to complete my literature review on ‘Can diet contribute to the development of periodontal disease in dogs?’ and I’m looking forward to sharing my findings with you all! 📃

Peach 🍑 the standard poodle had a teeth clean with me yesterday! 🪥 peach is 2 and her owner started noticing mild plaque forming on her teeth, she did the best thing and booked her in before and redness or gum recession happened. Did you know❓
Tennis balls 🎾 are the leading cause of worn down teeth and root exposure 🦷

The green fibre coating on a tennis ball is abrasive and meant to withstand the hard surface of a tennis court, which over time, repetitive catching, and playfully throwing it around in their mouth, wear down their canines, incisors, and premolars. Eventually exposing the pulp causing sensitivity and pain. Luckily in most cases the dog’s body acts, covering the root with a protective layer called dentin, which appears as a dark spot in the middle of the tooth.

But if extreme abrasion happens it can lead to more fragile teeth susceptible to fractures and breakages or teeth a need of root canal surgery or removal of the tooth completely.

How do I avoid this?
If you just play ball the odd day a month this shouldn’t really apply to you and your dog but if you have a ball mad collie like me, or working breed/cockapoo then it most likely will strike a cord, I noticed worn down teeth within the first year of Louie’s life.

🎾 If you own or use the green tennis balls for your dog, remove immediately
🎾 Invest in balls without the green furry coating.
🎾 Rubber balls have a smooth surface which is much more suitable. I personally recommend chuck it and kong balls.
🎾 Have a dental check at your vets if you are concerned about worn down teeth
🎾 Keep your eye on your dogs teeth and be mindful for any signs of sensitivity, pain or discomfort

Unfortunately if there is existing signs of teeth abrasion, it is irreversible but if abrasive toys are taken away then no further damage should occur.

King of the side eye 👀 Milo, had a teeth clean with me today! What a cutie he is 🥰
🦷 Milo’s owner has been brushing at home but struggled to shift the stubble plaque, we managed to remove most of the plaque today and his owners purchased some Orozyme gel to use at home along side to keep the plaque at bay. Milo will just be in for top ups as and when he needs them now🦷

Can you believe Missy is 15!! Just look at that puppy face 💕
Her owners booked her in for a teeth cleaning session due to them not wanting to put her under anaesthetic at her age, they have been trying various things at home from standard teeth cleaning, orozyme gel, natural treats but nothing has been shifting this stubborn plaque. Due to them using orozyme gel and her being on a good quality diet the plaque wasn’t as hard as it should have been for her age and loosened off quite well. Missy is booked in for two weeks for another session on her molars, in the meanwhile they are using plaque off on her food daily to help soften the top layer of the plaque build up on her carnassial molars 🦷 She was such a star for her first time yesterday 🪥

🦷🪥 February is pet dental health month 🪥🦷
Did you know?
💡 Periodontal disease is one of the most common inflammatory diseases in dogs and since dogs don’t often show signs of dental discomfort, owners are likely to underestimate dental issues and their impact on general health.

Abit about how plaque and tartar begins:
🥩 When eating, food particles cling to their teeth and gums, causing bacteria to build up.🔬 While the first layer is microscopic, more layers will accumulate over time. This will create a yellow-brown film over your dog’s teeth called plaque.
🪥 Brushing regularly can help to prevent plaque hardening into tartar, but if tartar is already present, they will need a professional clean to remove.

Progressive diseases if not treated:
🦠 Bacteria can make its way under the gum line, the body will then trigger an inflammatory response in attempt to fight off the bacteria within the mouth, but this unfortunately also destroys the tissue in the process leading to receded gums, tooth loss and in severe cases bone loss.
🩸Bacteria can then make its way into the bloodstream causing bacteremia. If left untreated it can affect other parts of the body causing infections and potentially damaging the heart, liver and kidneys.
❌ Let’s not leave it to get to that stage and do something whilst we still can. Ultrasonic teeth cleaning is a fabulous preventative to incorporate into the maintenance of your dog’s dental health. But please book in with your veterinarian for a consult if you have concerns of loose teeth, heavy plaque build up or receded gums.

Hi guys, sorry it’s taken so long for an update from my last post. I have made the decision over the next month to only offer teeth cleaning, this may be forever, this may be for a short while. As I have been away for over a month now, I know a lot of my clients have booked in with the other groomers I have recommended and I’m happy to know your pooches won’t be going without and will be take care of. I would be more than happy to still be in contact and see them for teeth cleaning sessions in the meanwhile. 🪥
Teeth cleaning is a gentle, relaxing treatment that involves holding the ultrasonic toothbrush on their teeth for a few minutes at a time with to help soften and loosen plaque. I personally haven’t had a dog yet which dislikes this process and I see it as a good stepping stone to ease back in. The results have been amazing which is a huge feel good for us, me and you as their owners knowing that we can hopefully reverse the early signs of gingivitis and gum disease. 🦠

Unfortunately due to struggling with my mental health quite sincerely, I have made the heartbreaking decision to take a step back from grooming for the foreseeable. Over the last 2 years I have been struggling with this role and unfortunately has come to a head and I have decided to take time for myself.
I understand that this may come to a shock for some of you.
Over the next few days I will be making a list of recommended groomers for my customers and over the next week I will be contacting everyone personally who is booked in but feel free to contact me if you see this post.
I can only apologise for the inconvenience caused.
I am heartbroken and I just want to thank all my amazing loyal customers and dogs for all their support they’ve given me over the last few years, you guys really are the best. 😭 I am always here with any questions regarding anything to do with your pooch or vetting other groomers.

Big changes coming to Grooms by Abi! ✨As much as I love grooming, I now have been out the game for over 7 months, unfortunately I dont currently see myself going back to it anytime soon. Since I’m currently studying canine nutrition and offering teeth cleaning, I thought a change in name would be appropriate.I never gave myself an official name when I started my own business back in 2020, I set up a page to showcase my work therefore it’s about time I had a rebrand. So please all give a warm welcome to The Modern Dog! 🐩 I wanted a name that was relevant to my current services, as they could be seen as modern age or new to dog owners. Teeth cleaning was always something we could keep on top of at home or be sedated to have a dental at the vets but with ultrasonic cleaning it’s becoming more convenient to pop over to your local groomer or emmipet provider to have them maintained regularly. 🪥As you all know I love researching and understanding how best we can help our dogs so there’s lots more information to come with tips and tricks regarding diet, teeth, grooming and even behaviour.
