🐾Training with Katherine - Leo🐾

Yesterday, I got to meet up with Leo and his owners again and it was wonderful to see that they had been putting their practice in!

Leo is quite lead reactive so they had been working on getting him to engage with them and encouraging him to make the choice to look to them when he is feeling unsure.

For this weeks session they brought him to mine where we could practice in a calm paddock with little distractions. They are finding that on walks from their home there are a bit too many things going on and they can loose his attention quite quickly.

We therefore stripped it back and worked on getting his focus and also discussed how to read his body language, how to understand his cues and act on them before he escalates his approach.

We introduced commands to be able to get him out of a situation where he displayed these behaviours so he can learn that that is enough and he doesn’t have to resort to barking.

Going forward with his plan they are going to walk him in quieter locations to work on his training to give him a stronger foundation to work from. To add to this in our sessions at mine we are going to add distractions incrementally and help build a more reliable change in behaviour.

Leo still has a little way to go but we know that this will be a process, not an event and I know that we are all determined to crack this together 💪

🐾 Training with Katharine - Pedro 🐾

I went round to see Pedro to help his owners manage his jumping. Pedro is one of my RDW dogs and I know him very well which meant we could get right to it.

I know that he means well and he is just so excited to say ‘hello!’ to everyone but not everyone likes to say ‘hello’ that way.

We worked on ignoring the unwanted behaviour of jumping and rewarding the wanted behaviour of being on the ground and further his learning by adding a command.

These methods are things I can do when we are out and about on his walks to help support his learning at home, it takes a village!

🐾 Training with Katharine - Charlie 🐾

Yesterday Charlie came over with some help with heel work and loose lead walking.

Being a spaniel, his nature drives him to follow his nose, not walk in a straight line and do all of the above at 100 miles an hour!

We worked on getting Charlie to focus on his owner to help him to learn that when he is checking in, he is rewarded. You can see by his face that he is keen to learn and follow instruction, we had no problem with eye contact!

Now we need to work on getting him to keep focus a little longer and keep him engaged with his owner.

This is going to take time and dedication but his owner is keen to crack this so I look forward to further training sessions where we can work on this together 💪

Here at Redditch Dog Training we understand that knowledge is power when it comes to Dog Training - the more knowledge the better in our opinion and that’s why we never stop learning.

Our wonderful Katharine went on an intensive Canine Aggression and Rehabilitation course on the weekend ran by IMDT so we met up last night with our lovely Megan and Lauren, who are currently completing their 100 case studies, to discuss what new information Katharine could bring to the table.

We absolutely love these monthly sessions where we meet up in person to discuss the dogs we have all been working with and putting our heads together to make sure each dog working with RDT doesn’t just have one trainer working with them they have 4 💜

We love to hear how your pups are getting on! Read about how Winnie & her mum have been getting on below ❤️

"Morning guys! Just a little update although its only a few days! I have took the dogs out this morning on my own early doors thought I'd try the lake..... people absolutely EVERYWHERE cyclists, walkers and people with dogs I could have absolutely cried at how winnie walked 😇 I initially thought oh s**t it's busy better turn round but we carried on! I am so proud of her she even had a dog walking directly behind her for 5 mins and I asked them to over take us as she can be noisy but she didn't make a sound the odd whimper and were not even using sausages as a treat yet! Jess you are amazing thank you for all of your advice so far ❤️ will keep you updated on how she is when the sausages come out haha xx"

Keep up the great work guys! We can't wait for the next update ❤️🐾

All of them were on the other side of the road but she just looks at me and waits for a treat , she just seems so much more relaxed on walks!! Coming on leaps and bounds 🥳"

Keep up the great work guys! We can't wait for the next update ❤️🐾

🐾 Training with Katharine - Hugo 🐾

This week, I got to meet this adorable ball of fluff, Hugo 🥹

Hugo’s owner needed a little help with getting Hugo to understand that wees and poos should be done outside and not in the comfort of one’s own home, and also some help to reduce his biting.

Biting is a very normal puppy behaviour, but her shoes and hands were suffering, so we needed to put in a bit of work to redirect this need to teethe onto more appropriate things.

We also worked on little training things to help keep this little pup’s mind busy and get him to understand that when he does what his owner asks, he gets good things and to help him start to make good choices on his own.

We then started to get Hugo to associate the word ‘toilet’ with going to the loo to encourage him to go outside. There is a little way to go with this, but with consistency and repetition, he will get there. 💖

🐾 Training with Jess – Winnie, Frieda & Ted 🐾

This week, I had a fantastic follow-up session with Winnie, Frieda, Ted, and their wonderful owners—and I couldn’t be happier with the progress they’ve made!

Winnie and her family have been working so hard on her lead walking and keeping calm before heading out, and it truly showed. It was amazing to see how far she’s come! Now, we’re moving on to the next stage of her training—helping her manage her excitement around people. Winnie absolutely loves attention and has learned that barking gets her noticed, so we’ve put together a training plan to help reduce her barking, with the long-term goal of stopping it altogether.

I left our session with a huge smile on my face! There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing dedicated owners put in the work and watching their dogs thrive because of it. Well done, guys—I can’t wait for our next session! 🐾✨

🐾 Ted & Ralph - Training with Katharine 🐾

Today I got to go and see these cuties for a training session.
I know them both from my walks so no need for a preliminary chat, it was wellies on and off we go!

Whilst both Ted and Ralph are both fab off lead and happy to run around with other dogs it is a different story when they are on the lead and they can both be quite worried and reactive.

Their owner had already established the ‘look’ command which was a great foundation to work from.
We expanded on this together to help these boys know that they just need to check in if they are feeling unsure and that other dogs on leads are no threat and can actually mean that rewards and positivity are coming your way!

I know how dedicated their owner is to fixing this issue and I am confident that they are on the road to success 💪💖

🐾 Training with Jess - Nugget 🐾

On Thursday, we went to meet the lovely Nugget and his mum as he was showing some lead reactivity towards people out on their walks. We had an initial chat about what behaviours were being displayed and took Nugget out to see him in action.

Of course, Nugget was an absolute angel and decided not to show us how he normally reacts to people walking past. But thankfully he demonstrated a lot of behaviours that helped us understand how he was feeling out on his walks. Unlike a lot of lead reactive dogs, Nugget was very relaxed on his walk and happily trotted past the majority of people walking nicely in heel next to his mum and the pushchair.

The fact that he looked so relaxed on his walk and was sniffing away is a really good sign. After Nugget's walk we sat down for a further conversation with Nugget's mum to discuss why he may feel unsure of certain strangers whilst out on a walk and how a combination of his mums worries and him being slightly apprehensive may result in him reacting.

We put a training plan together for his mum to work with him on over the next month and I am absolutely certain they will be working hard on this and can't wait to hear the updates!

🐾 Training with Jess - Skye 🐾

On Tuesday I went to meet the lovely Skye and her family to chat about her lead reactivity. As I spoke with her parents they explained Skye’s behaviour had changed since moving home and they weren’t sure what had caused the change. Previously Skye had always been walked with her brother but unfortunately he sustained an injury shortly after moving home and Skye had started being walked on her own.
The more we talked I started to realise Skye is probably more reactive due to lack of confidence when out on her own and because her big brother Ozzy is also reactive it could be a learned behaviour rather than a direct dislike towards other dogs and being more of a natural response.

Of course, we can never be 100% sure without seeing things firsthand, so we headed out for a walk to see her in action. Throughout the walk, Skye showed lots of displacement behaviours, these are little signs that told me she was feeling anxious. But like the good girl she is, she gave me a real insight into her reactions towards other dogs, moving vehicles, and anything else that caught her eye and she fixated on.

I suggested giving Skye the chance to meet other dogs in a safe, controlled setting, without the restriction of a lead, as I wanted her to have the opportunity to realise that she she doesn’t need to be worried around other dogs. Her wonderful parents were on board, and Skye came out with me a few days later to make some new friends. And what a superstar she was! She absolutely loved zooming around and playing with the other dogs and it was so wonderful to see.

This is fantastic news, It means that with continued socialisation and consistent training, we can work on undoing that learned reactivity and help Skye enjoy her walks to the fullest. I can’t wait to see her progress, her future is looking bright! 🌟🐾

Every week we will be having a star of the week in our groups and talking a little about why they deserved it.

This week we wanted to say a massive Well done to beautiful Ron who very much deserved his trophy.

Not only did he do all his commands superbly he stayed so calm around the other dogs and listened to his parents perfectly all evening despite never being in that kind of enviroment previously.

Our very first star of the week and it couldn’t be more well deserved ⭐️

Tonight we started our 6-12 months and 12 months + Redditch Dog Training classes in our new venue and they couldn’t have started better 💜

It was so lovely to meet all our new babies who will be training with us over the next few months. Tonight was introduction night, we welcomed everyone to the class and put everyone through their paces to see what stage they are working at now and where we will be working to over the next few months.

I can’t wait to watch all our beautiful babies (I would say little babies but we have 3 Newfoundland cross babies in there so little isn’t an appropriate word 😂) grown and learn over the next few sessions!

It feels so nice to be back training in a hall again 😍

We can’t wait to meet all our puppies next on their introduction on 3rd March 💗🐾

🐾 Rocco & Dolly - Training with Jess 🐾

On Friday, I went to meet these two lovely pups and their lovely mum to chat about some of the challenges she’s been facing during their walks. Rocco & Dolly are regulars on our group walks, and over the past year, we’ve seen them grow so much in confidence around other dogs. 🌟

Now, it was time to focus on how they interact with their mum while out on the lead. We discussed their behaviours, and then we headed out to see if we could spot what was happening in real time. Well, fortunately or unfortunately, whichever way you want to see it, They were walking confidently past other dogs, even when the other dogs ran up to them! They showed no signs of the usual nervousness, and it was clear that they can stay calm and composed with their mum.

After a little more discussion at home, we put together a training plan to help with the behaviours their mum had been describing. Since they’ve already shown they can stay calm, I’m confident that with these new skills, Rocco, Dolly, and their mum will become even more relaxed and confident during their walks. With some time and practice, those little hiccups in behaviour will be a thing of the past! 😊

🐾 Ivy - Training with Jess 🐾

On Friday, I had the absolute pleasure of seeing the lovely Ivy and her Mom’s again! Recently, she’s been showing some lead-reactive behaviours on walks with her family, so we jumped straight into action. Since I already know Ivy, I thought the best approach was to get her out and see how she was doing firsthand.

At the start of our walk, she was doing brilliantly—calm, composed, and taking everything in stride. About three-quarters of the way through she started reacting to people and dogs passing by. This is totally normal! When a dog goes beyond their comfort threshold, it can be tough for them to manage all those big emotions. I chatted with her mums about what was happening, how to help Ivy stay relaxed, and what to do when those reactive behaviours start to show. The goal is to make her walks enjoyable for everyone!

I first met Ivy around four years ago, and I can’t believe how much progress she’s made since then. She’s come so far! With her mums dedicated to helping her, I have no doubt they’ll all be feeling more confident on their walks in no time. Keep going, Ivy—you've got this! 💛🐾

🐾 Leo – Training with Katharine 🐾

I got to meet this gorgeous guy, Leo over the weekend.

Leo is a rescue dog and although a total softy in the home, he had been struggling on his walks with lead reactivity so his owner reached out for some help.

After a chat to talk about Leo’s behaviour on walks we headed out to see him in action. Leo was very reactive and anxious about strange people being near him when he is on the lead and he made that clear to us by using his voice and lunging with his body.

We headed back home and talked through commands to help keep his attention on his owner and help him associate people and dogs he sees with a positive reward.

Leo has a little way to go but with consistency from his owners and a few more sessions I feel confident that we can get Leo to realise that strangers aren’t a threat and that he can make the choice to check in with his owners when he is feeling unsure.

Well done Leo! You’ve had a bit of a tough start but you are loved and I know that with your owners’ support, you can crack this 💪💖

🐾 Cooper – Training with Jess 🐾

On Friday, I had the pleasure of meeting the lovely Cooper and his parents to chat about some puppy behaviours they were experiencing and how to work through them.

Cooper is a gorgeous boy who adores everyone and gets very excited on his walks, especially when he wants to say hello to other dogs! He’s also struggling with his recall at the moment, but after chatting with his parents, it became clear that he simply didn’t understand what was being asked of him.

I spent time explaining how a dog's brain works, the best times to train, and how to get started with both topics.

After a great discussion and demonstrating some basic training techniques, I have no doubt that Cooper will be heeling beautifully on the lead in no time!

Well done, Super Duper Cooper! It’s always a joy to work with such a cute and fluffy pup!
