🐾 Training with Katharine - Star 🐾

Yesterday I went to see this sweet little button, Star!

Star is a super smart girl with heaps of energy. However this energy was spilling over into the biting and shaking of her lead which is a bit of a nuisance when you just want to leave for a nice walk! It was meaning that getting her out of the house was taking almost as long as the walk itself 🙈

This behaviour is very common in Jack Russells as when they are feeling jazzy they tend to grab and shake anything close to them.

We worked on teaching Star that when she is calm and holds back, she gets what she wants. We then applied this to getting her harness and lead on.

We also taught her better ways to focus that energy, that instead of biting the lead, she is to focus on her owner and redirect her excitement into that task instead.

She did so well and I am sure with patience and practice she will get there. Well done, Star!

🐾Training with Katharine - Rowan 🐾

This week I went to see Rowan 🐾

Rowan’s owner has obviously put a lot of work into her because she is generally extremely well behaved but since moving house a year ago she has become lead reactive.

We got straight to work to enhance Rowan’s natural desire to check in with her owner by getting a bit of distance from dogs, asking her to check in and allowing her to look back at the dog and then rewarding her for checking in again. When your dog checks in like Rowan does it is a fantastic opportunity to reassure them that you’ve got this and they don’t need to worry or feel like they need to take matters into their own hands.

I think a lot of us want our dogs to love all other dogs all of the time but actually a good thing to aim for is neutrality. If your dog can be calm and confident around other dogs it can give you the chance to asses whether the other dog is friendly and whether they are going to positively or negatively add to your own dog’s experience. Getting some distance also gives you the option of advocating for your dog if they don’t want another dog in their face.

Rowan did really well and took to her training like a duck to water. I have every confidence that she and her owner are going to make excellent progress 🤩

🐾 Training with Katharine - Watson 🐾

A couple of days ago I went to visit my pal Watson.

Watson comes on my group walks and whilst he is a perfect angel on our walks he has taken up the habit of barking at home.

When the doorbell rings he is so overcome that he cannot contain himself! This behaviour has spilled over to when he is in the car and approaching a destination that he knows. Barking is not always the best when your owner is trying to reverse park 😂

We worked on getting his focus and giving him something to do, other than barking. We taught him how to wait calmly when the bell rings and for the door to be opened and taught him that a nice, calm Wattie will get a reward and a barky, noisy Wattie will not! Luckily Watson is very treat motivated so it did not take long to get him round to our way of thinking!

I am confident that with some practice, the ‘wait’ command he has learned will be transferable to those parking under pressure situations!

Another wonderful week of classes.

Everyone was so brilliant I couldn’t limit it to one star per class, I had to pick a few because they all tried so hard!!

First up was Trixie! Trixie always amazes me with how quickly she picks up all her new commands. She is always super focused and ready to learn and this week was no exception. Well done, Trixie!

For my next class I had to pick three because they were all so amazing, I couldn’t separate them! Willow has been struggling with her confidence a bit but this week she did so well! She worked hard at listening to her owner and did very well with the other dogs. She still has a way to go but we were all super proud of her this week!
Next up was Marley. Marley has really grown into a wonderful dog. She listens perfectly and always tries her best. Her heel work is absolutely perfect and she is a model example to the others!
Last one was Bruce. A couple of weeks ago Bruce didn’t have the best focus. He would listen to his owner but on his terms and it was sometimes tricky to get him to perform the tasks set. However his owner has been putting in the time and my goodness how it showed this week! So much better! Pats on the back for everyone!!

My superstar from my obedience class was Reggie. Reggie has been known to be away with the fairies on occasion but not this week! This week he had his listening ears on and his focus was MUCH better!

Training is progression not perfection and Reggie made a marked improvement this week! I looks forward to seeing him continue on this positive trajectory.

Well done to all my pups this week, you make me proud every Monday! 🥹

We had a great set of puppy classes this week. It’s great to watch the puppies confidence grow and see the progress everyone has made.

That said my first star of the week is Winnie, she mastered the down in record time and throughout the session she stayed engaged. This was a big change from the previous week when Winnie struggled to even sit. She now patiently sits and waits, adoringly looking up at her owner.

My next star of the week is Dolly, last week Dolly felt overwhelmed seeing the other pups and felt more comfortable keeping her distance. We kept a close eye on Dolly to make sure she was comfortable and noticed she seemed quite interested in one of the other pups. We thought we’d utilise this and see if she’s like to greet Fig away from the rest of the group. The experiment was a success and within no time Dolly was wizzing around with Fig and even got closer to the rest of the pups in the group afterwards 🤩

🐾 Training with Katharine - Quin 🐾

Yesterday sweet Quin came to see me in my paddock to work on some recall.

Quin is a friendly guy who is excellent in all ways apart from when he is off the lead. He is nose down and it’s like no one else exists.

Our main focus was proximity work. Getting Quin to engage and see value in staying closer. The closer your dog is, the more control you have. We tied this in with different ways to call your dog back to you, utilising his desire to follow his nose!

He seemed to really enjoy himself and by the end there was a marked improvement in his responses. Well done Quin!

I look forward to seeing Quin again to further work on adding value to his owner to build a more reliable recall.

🐾 Training with Katharine - Harry 🐾

This week I went to meet Harry in the park.

Harry is a lovely boy and it is very clear that his owners have done an excellent job in training him. Off the lead, Harry is a dream. Friendly to all and always with his listening ears on.

However, when the lead is on, he can be reactive. One of the main reasons for lead reactive behaviour is that a dog does not have the ‘flight’ option and so if they feel unsure they can take the ‘fight’ option instead.

We worked on ways to encourage Harry to check in when he sees a distraction so that he can get reassurance when he is feeling unsure. We also worked on our body language to show Harry that his owner is confident and in control so he doesn’t have to worry about taking the reins.

He did so well and I was really impressed by his owners who absorbed everything I said like sponges!

I look forward to our next session where we can build on our work with more distractions.

🐾 Training with Katharine - Bilbo 🐾

Yesterday I had the pleasure of seeing Bilbo and his family again to continue his training with reactivity towards dogs.

We spoke about Bilbos progress and areas we need to focus on. How important it is to stay calm and relaxed while training as dogs primarily communicate is body language and they can mirror us.

We carried the training session out in a public place to practice our training with real life distractions. I took lead of Bilbo to 1 see if Bilbo was different with me and 2 so his parents could see how I would walk him using the training we have practiced together.

Bilbo was fantastic so I handed him back over to his owners, they know what they’re doing we just need to polish up on timing and consistency. It was great to see the smiles on everyone’s faces at the end of the session as Bilbo was a superstar the whole walk. We even had time to do some recall training with distractions.

Looking forward to hearing how they get on and seeing Bilbo again 💓
