๐ŸŒŸWorried about your dog and rapeseed?๐ŸŒŸ

At this time of year, we start to notice lots of posts circulating social media regarding rapeseed; these posts are shared extensively and can understandably worry many dog owners. The posts usually state that rapeseed is highly poisonous to dogs, and can cause signs including haemolytic anaemia, blindness, damaged nervous system, digestive disorders and breathing problems.

These posts are misinformation.

The signs mentioned are typically only seen in grazing animals, and most dogs actually remain asymptomatic after exposure to rapeseed. Dogs can develop gastrointestinal upset if they have ingested some of the plant, and there have been reports of skin reactions which resemble burns, but this is extremely rare and does not happen to every dog which comes into contact with it.

Congratulations to Ellen, who qualified as a Registered Veterinary Nurse this summer, following in the footsteps of Aunty Dawn who many of you will know! Ellen first came to Special Friends as a work experience student, and then joined us as a Student Veterinary Nurse last year. Ellen has worked hard over the last 3 years, combining theory at Hartpury University and practical work. Well done Ellen!

Please make sure your dogs - or yourselves - don't go in the lake at Arrow Valley. The water is currently being treated. Thanks

Bluebell (Hyacinthoides)๐Ÿ’œ

If you have been out for a walk in the woodland recently, you may have seen an abundance of bluebells blooming. Whilst these are beautiful to look at, your pet may become unwell if they ingest any.

The toxins within bluebells are known as cardiac glycosides which can increase the force of contractions in the heart.
Ingestion of bluebells is likely to cause gastrointestinal upset in dogs and cats such as vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal pain, but they can affect the heart rate and rhythm in serious cases.

If your pet has ingested bluebells and is otherwise bright and well, we recommend that you seek advice from a member of the Animal PoisonLine team who will be able to take a history and discuss the risk to your pet.

โ˜Ž๏ธOwners can call Animal PoisonLine on 01202 509000
โ˜Ž๏ธVeterinary professionals can call VPIS on 0207 305 5055

Everybody meet the most beautiful girl Lexi, who has stolen the hearts of everyone at Special Friends ๐Ÿ’•. Today Lexi finished her course of chemotherapy, which involved many visits to us since January, lots of needles and lots of biscuits!

Lexi had a very rough start to life, and was taken on by the RSPCA who rehomed her to an amazing family, without whom she wouldn't be the awesome dog she is today ๐Ÿพ

Lexi, you are amazing ๐ŸŒŸ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ•

It's going to be a hot few days so please take precautions if you have an appointment with us.

We have lovely air conditioning throughout the practice, but would advise that you don't walk to us and instead cool your car down if you have air conditioning before you put your pet in, and drive to your appointment. We wouldn't recommend travelling in a car that doesn't have air conditioning.

If you would prefer to cancel your appointment then please let us know by emailing [email protected]
