Many don’t know this information! Remember every second matters during a choking incident.
1. Place the dog on their back. Brace the back against the floor. Straddle the dog while adjusting yourself based on the size of the dog. Position the head in “in-line position” with the airway parallel to the floor.
2. Make an open diamond shape with your hands. Place your thumbs on either side of the trachea below the ball or object. Grip the “V” of the jaw using lip/cheek to protect fingers.
3. Push with a J-stroke down and out against the ball until it ejects from the mouth.
Both this method and the Heimlich method has been proven to work in these scenarios so don’t hesitate to save your dog.

What is Alabama Rot? ⚠️
Alabama Rot is an extremely rare but potentially deadly disease that affects dogs. It causes damage to the blood vessels in the skin, leading to skin sores. In severe cases, it can affect vessels in the kidneys, leading to kidney failure and even death.

What causes Alabama Rot? 🦠
Research into Alabama Rot is ongoing. At the moment, vets still aren’t sure exactly what causes it, mainly because it’s so rare. However, we know that most cases occur between November and May, and it’s often reported in dogs that have been walking in muddy or woodland areas.

How can I prevent my dog catching it? 🐕
Even though Alabama Rot is difficult to prevent, there are some steps you can take if you are concerned for your dog or you know of cases in your area:
- Check your dog regularly for wounds, and contact your vet for an appointment if you are concerned
- Wash your dog’s feet after they come home from walking, especially if they have been in a muddy area
- Avoid walking in areas known for Alabama Rot (you can check your area via the Vets4Pets website)

⚠️TOXIC FLOWERS TO DOGS IN SPRING⚠️

DAFFODILS & NARCISSUS 🌼
The bulbs, flowers and leaves contain alkaloids which can cause an upset stomach or cause vomiting if eaten. In extreme cases, they can even cause dogs to have fits. The bulbs are the most toxic part but even water in which daffodils have been standing can be poisonous so keep your dog well away.

TULIPS & HYACINTH🌷
The bulbs contain a toxin which can irritate dogs’ mouths and gastrointestinal tract, resulting in drooling, vomiting and diarrhoea. Serious cases are rare but heart problems and difficulty breathing are also symptoms of Tulip poisoning.

BLUEBELLS🪻
Bluebell plants and bulbs contain ‘scillarens’, chemicals that reduce the heart rate. This can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy and disorientation in dogs.

LILIES 🪷
This family of flowering plant includes lily of the valley, calla lily and peace lily varieties, all of which are potentially toxic for dogs. The pollen, bulb and foliage of these plants can cause a variety of symptoms depending on the variety of lily, but the most common symptoms are vomiting, diarrhoea, lack of appetite and drooling.

It’s always safest to avoid planting these flowers in your garden or having them in your home. Whilst toxic poisoning caused by bulbs is fortunately rare, our vets do see an increase in dogs with an upset stomach after nibbling on garden bulbs.

If you suspect your pet has eaten a toxic bulb or plant, contact your local vet immediately

⚠️ID TAGS⚠️

In the UK, the Control of Dogs Order 1992 states that any dog in a public place must wear a collar tag with the name and address (including postcode) of the owner engraved or written on it, or engraved on a tag. Your telephone number is optional (however as the legislation was written in 1992 before the advancements in technology and mobile phones, we would definitely recommend this).

You do not have to put your dogs name on the tag, this is optional. Unfortunately dog theft is a real danger and if the thief knows the name of your dog this may help them pass on the dog to the unsuspecting new owners because it appears they know the dog because the dog responds to their name. We would therefore recommend, you do not put your dogs name on the tag.

An example of the information to put on a dog tag is:

Mr A Smtih
No 54, BX17 7TD
01202 232218

OR

Mr A Smtih
54 Letsbe Avenue
BX17 7TD
01202 232218

Certain dogs are exempt from having to wear a collar with a dog tag. They are:

• Any dog registered with the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association.
• Any dog while being used in emergency rescue work.
• Any dog while being used on official duties by a member of Her Majesty’s Armed Forces, HM Customs and Excise or the police.
• Any dog while being used for driving or tending cattle or sheep.
• Any dog while being used for the capture or destruction of vermin.
• Any dog while being used for sporting purposes.

Vomiting is a common problem in dogs, but it's really important to recognise when something could be wrong. Fortunately, most cases are caused by something minor that resolves itself in less than 24 hours, but some are much more serious and require veterinary treatment ⚠️

When you should contact your vet:
- Retching (trying to vomit but not bringing anything up)
- Low energy (lethargy)
- A bloated tummy
- A painful abdomen
- Vomiting for more than 24 hours
- Vomiting constantly with no breaks
- Vomiting and is very young or very old
- Vomiting and is otherwise unwell/has other illness
- Blood in their vomit
- Signs of dehydration (sticky gums or sunken eyes)
- Disorientation or collapse

[Visual description: Infographic reads: dog vomit guide. Vomiting is a common problem in dogs that can be caused by many different things, some minor, some very serious. Vomiting, retching and regurgitation are all caused by different things, so being able to tell them apart is important. What's in my dog's vomit? ‘Coffee grounds’ - blood that has been digested can look like coffee grounds. Fresh blood - let your vet know whether there is a large or small amount of blood. Green liquid - a large amount could be a symptom of a gut blockage. Foam/froth - if your dog is producing foam/froth but no vomit call your vet. Yellow bile - bile from the gall bladder is usually yellow or greenish-yellow. Grass - eating grass is normal for dogs so it might turn up in their vomit. Undigested food - check whether your dog is regurgitating or vomiting. Always call your vet if you are concerned.]
