Our vets Ryan, Ellie & Emilia, our nurse Rosie & one of our receptionists Hana headed to the awards in Bristol on Tuesday. We would like to say a special thanks to Meagan, Fernanda, Emily, Jen & Georgia who stayed behind to man the fort.

We are so grateful to have been awarded Best Equine Vets for a second year. This once again is a huge achievement for us, one that we wouldn't have been able to do without your kind reviews and continued support to the practice.

Thank you once again from all of us at GVG Brooks!

๐ŸชฑWORMING PROGRAMME๐Ÿชฑ

We advise a targeted approach, aiming to give wormer treatments to those that need it and avoiding giving wormers where the horse does not need to be treated.

A targeted approach involves understanding what the individual horseโ€™s level of worm infection is. We arenโ€™t aiming for every horse to have no worms at all, but for them to have a low enough number that they donโ€™t cause problems. In fact, having a very low number can be beneficial. To understand the individual horseโ€™s burden, we recommend performing faecal worm egg counts (FWECs) 2-3 times a year.

The main species we are looking for in poo samples are redworms and ascarids (mainly in younger horses). Within a single herd it is very common to see 80% of the worms in 20% of the horses. This is due to the fact some horses are predisposed to carrying parasites - this may be because they are older, younger, immunocompromised, or just because their gut conditions are more favourable to the worms. We call these horses โ€˜high egg sheddersโ€™ and it is important to identify them so that we can be manage them accordingly. FWECs cannot reliably see pin worms, tape worms or encysted red worms so it important to bear this in mind.

If you aren't sure or would like more advice then please contact our office on 01737 246109 to speak to a vet ๐Ÿฉบ

๐ŸŒŸMeet The Team Monday๐ŸŒŸ

This week moves onto our client care team, starting off strong with Emily Birch our office manager!

Most of you would have spoken to Emily when calling into the practice but we thought it was time to put a face to the name.

Emily joined the team in 2021 after spending four years working in Equine and Farm practices across the South East. Emily has a Diploma in Business Administration and has a keen interest in animal medicine.

In her spare time, she enjoys helping on the family farm, showing sheep, calf rearing and occasionally attending Polo matches and local Point to Point meetings.

๐ŸฉนFOOT ABSCESS๐Ÿฉน

The wet season is something us horse owners dread and at the moment we are seeing lots of foot abscesses because of this wet weather.

Clinical signs associated with foot abscesses can include:

Lameness
๐Ÿด most commonly this is acute onset and severe (they can be sore enough that horses won't bear any weight on the leg)
๐ŸดHowever the lameness can be up and down for a few days โž– This is due to the pus moving in the foot and changes in pressure
๐ŸดBounding digital pulses โž– Due to inflammation of foot
๐ŸดHeat in hoof โž– Due to inflammation in foot

If you are worried your horse has a foot abscess we recommended veterinary attention straight away as treating abscesses sooner rather than later reduces the chances of complications occurring.

๐ŸŒŸMeet The Team Monday๐ŸŒŸ

This week is focused on Dr Ellen Griffiths.

Ellie is a fairly new face to the team joining October last year. Ellie is originally from Rutland in the East Midlands but spent a lot of her early childhood living abroad. She graduated from the University of Liverpool in 2014.

Since graduating Ellie has been working in first opinion practice and spent a year in a dentistry only practice.

Ellie spent the early part of her career in Yorkshire and moved to Surrey after 18 months at a practice in Cambridgeshire.

Ellie grew up riding and was a member of the Cottesmore Hunt Pony Club. There is not much time for riding anymore but outside of work se enjoys walking her dog, Darcy, who can often be found snoozing on the passenger seat while Ellie is out on yard visits.

Ellieโ€™s clinical interests are general practice, with a special interest in dentistry. Ellie is a qualified equine dental technician as a member of the British Association of Equine Dental Technicians. She is currently working towards the Advanced Practitioner qualification in Equine Dentistry.

Darcy is a 7 year old Miniature Schnauzer X Jack Russell but better known as a โ€œSchnackโ€๐ŸŒŸ

๐ŸŒง๏ธMUD FEVER๐ŸŒง๏ธ

As our fields have become wet and muddy this winter. A very common problem around this time of year is pastern dermatitis aka Mud fever.

Mud Fever can be caused by lots of different things:

Most commonly it is caused by commensal bacteria that are able to invade the skin due to constant wetting/abrasions of the skin e.g Dermatophilus congolensis, Staphylococcus spp

๐ŸชณLeg Mites - chorioptic mange
๐ŸงซRingworm - fungal infection
๐Ÿฆ Folliculitis - deep infection of hair follicles with Staphylococcal bacteria
๐ŸงชContact with irritant chemicals
โ˜€๏ธPhotosensitisation/sunburn associated with liver disease or certain plants
๐ŸงฌImmune mediated disease of the blood vessels

To treat mud fever properly the infectious agents, need to be eliminated to break the cycle of inflammation. We advise:

โœ‚๏ธClipping the legs
๐ŸงผWashing the legs
๐Ÿ’จDrying them thoroughly
๐ŸงดApplying our mud fever cream daily
