๐ด AIRWAY PROBLEMS IN THE HEAT - part 2 - how do we get to the bottom of the cause?
We are seeing an increase in numbers of horses with airway worries in the current heatwave.
Weโll chat with the owner about various risk factors and management aspects including turnout, stable ventilation, bedding, feed etc. We may examine the horse at your yard including checking their lymph nodes, nostrils, listening to their lungs and trachea. We might recommend a stable side blood test (StableLab) - this is a really helpful tool all of our vets have in their car, which allows us to check for signs of inflammation and infection in the stable, with the handheld lab device giving the vet a result in 10 minutes. We might then recommend further investigation including airway endoscopy and taking wash samples of the lungs and trachea to check for the cell types present as well as for bacteria. We might recommend ultrasound scans of the lungs and chest for further information in some cases. We can perform all of these tests on the yard, without the need to travel to a clinic.
Itโs important you know whatโs normal for your horse, you shouldnโt see laboured breathing, abdominal effort when breathing, audible wheezes, or nostril flaring. Horsesโ normal respiratory rate is under 16 breaths per minute, if yours is higher than this you should keep an eye and call us if over 25 breaths per minute, or you notice any of the other symptoms.
Our vets are always happy to provide phone advice free of charge if youโre not sure if your horse is unwell enough to need a consultation. Donโt hesitate to get in touch by phone or email - 01737 246109 / [email protected]

Another great update and video from Supported rider Harrison but this time with second horse Harry at his first ever event.
'On the Sunday we took Henry โWatervalley Quite A Guyโ back for the BE90. This was his first ever event and heโs still quite green and very tall! Nearly 17.3hh. Heโs never done a dressage test on grass or show jumped on grass . When he went into his dressage he had horses bolting past us and exploding but Henry kept his focus on me and produced a steady 35. The SJ was even more exciting as the rugby game in the field next door was in full swing along with 60mph gusts of wind and torrential rain but Henry popped round knocking a few poles but taking it all in his stride. We then went to the XC and showed Henry what a start box was but again - all in his stride and we had great fun on his first ever XC run going clear! I was so pleased with him and it wrapped up a great first weekend eventing ๐'
Great update and video from supported rider Harrison for his first event of the season with Direct Cruising.
Video and update for Harrison's second horse Henry to follow!
'The first event of the season at Tweseldown was a great success. Direct Cruising has been so excited for this day and didnโt disappoint. Steve had given him a pre season check and has helped get him in tip top shape and itโs clear to say Cruise is feeling better than ever. We were in the BEU18100 and produced a respectable 29 dressage although I was a bit ring rusty not helped by the wind ๐จ, SJ was very exciting as it was our first time on grass and we had an unlucky pole which could have been to do with speed and excitement !! Onto the XC and Cruise flew out the start box to produce a clear round with a few naughty time faults meaning we finished 7th ๐Next stop Great Witchington U18Novice....'
