Vaccinations for Dogs
Vaccinations protect against infectious diseases which can be fatal.
Vaccinations protect your dog against:
1. Parvovirus
A highly contagious virus spread through contact with infected faeces. The virus can also live on shoes, clothes and floors for many months. Symptoms include vomiting, severe bloody diarrhoea and lethargy. Parvovirus can be fatal in up to 90% of cases. Puppies are especially susceptible.
2. Canine distemper
A contagious virus spread through saliva, blood, or urine. Initial symptoms include red, watery eyes, nasal discharge and fever. Later symptoms include lethargy, coughing, vomiting, diarrhoea and seizures. It can also cause hardening of the footpads and nose. It is fatal in up to 50% of cases.
3. Leptospirosis
A bacterial infection spread through infected rat urine and contaminated water. Symptoms include fever, muscle tremors, vomiting, diarrhoea, increased thirst, jaundice and breathing difficulties. In severe cases dogs can develop kidney damage and liver failure. It can be fatal even with the best treatment.
4. Infectious Canine Hepatitis
A viral disease spread through urine, saliva, blood, faeces and nasal discharges. Symptoms include fever, lethargy, vomiting, coughing, diarrhoea and abdominal pain. In severe cases the disease can cause jaundice and liver failure, and can result in seizures and coma. Even with the best treatment severe cases of infectious canine hepatitis can be fatal.
Optional additional vaccinations are also available for Parainfluenza and Kennel Cough which cause upper respiratory tract disease.
Puppies can start their vaccinations from6-8 weeks old with a second vaccination 2-4 weeks later. Pups should not mix with other, potentially unvaccinated dogs until their primary vaccine course is complete.
Booster vaccination are required for distemper, parvovirus and infectious hepatitis every 3 years and for leptospirosis every year.

have a belly flap? 🤔 🐈 You might notice it swinging from side to side as your cat walks, but don’t worry, it’s not because they are overweight! It’s called the primordial pouch - an extra layer of loose skin and fatty tissue that runs the length of their stomach but is more pronounced towards their rear. Its function is to help protect their vital organs, allow for agile movement, and even help with storing food after eating. It’s more noticeable on some cats than others and that is completely normal.

A good way to tell the difference between a primordial pouch and a cat belly caused by being overweight is to check your cat's body condition – take a look at our previous post for more info on this. 👀

We were very proud to be apart of this challenge for an amazing cause! 💛💙

30 IVC Evidensia practices in Scotland have raised a whopping £6,420 for a well-known motor neurone disease (MND) charity, Doddie Aid.

Orchestrated by Beth Sweeney, a veterinary surgeon from Kilbarchan Veterinary Practice, the mass-participation event was designed to get colleagues moving with any and all activities accepted, including kayaking, cross-country skiing, and a News Years Day Dip at Mugdock Park. And move they did! Between the 1st of January and 3rd of February, the total distance covered by all participants clocked over 41,500 miles.

Beth commented,

“After having 10 practices in our fundraising league last year, it was wonderful to see us get 30 practices participating and raising money for such a worthwhile and important charity. I’m so grateful for everyone who got involved this year and made it the most successful Doddie Aid so far!”

Roxanne Ferguson, Area Support Manager for the region, added:

“The team pulled out all the stops this year and I’m so proud of Beth for organising such a brilliant fundraising campaign. We couldn’t have done it without the support of our practice network, who really got involved this year to make it a success.”

Phenomenal effort from all 30 practices! Read the full story here: https://ow.ly/uozN50QJNjl
