Educational post that will be pinned🫶🏻

With babies going to be everywhere I want to make something super clear. Do not feed or water the baby, unless you can offer live/dried insects and the baby/babies are warm. I’ve used one of my previous tiny babies as a beautiful model😅 In their tongue they have a tiny opening that goes directly to their lungs if anything wet goes down there the chances are they will aspirate throughout the day and pass away, even drops put to the back of the throat can go down there and do the same thing they will “dry drown”. I use one of these syringes that goes directly to their crop and even then this can be done wrong and can be fatal. They’re beyond fragile. If you find a baby bird especially one that’s pink don’t leave it where it is, mum can’t pick them up and put them back in the nest they’re too heavy if you can see the nest and are able to pop them back, mum won’t reject them because they “smell like a human” handle them as little as possible and put them back. If no nest can be found contact a rehabber, pop baby/babies somewhere dry and warm and we’ll give all advice needed until they reach one of us. Last year I had 17 babies that were spoon fed water before arrival and didn’t see the following morning, I really appreciate it’s stressful but when out of the nest they’re too cold to process food/water and again they have that tiny opening that collects the water first.

Still in awe over this from diamond, also a thank you to Christine Jenkins for the extra baby enclosure. One of the things on the wish list was a cube shelf system in my head it’s going to make an amazing little baby bird station as it’ll perfectly hold the little enclosures and I can add another system to it to expand when needed. There’s also a fabric bird bag which is well needed with the corvids as they tend to be escape artists but you’ve got to be very careful housing a bird that doesn’t want to be housed they will really hurt themselves on normal enclosures. Also a huge thank you to Liz for the kind donation Friday evening it didn’t go unnoticed with the sheer panic with the fox I didn’t see it until Saturday as I don’t get notifications for PayPal or Amazon😅

Afternoon all, everyone’s doing well and had breakfast little Ethan the dove is eating and drinking all by himself🫶🏻 Unfortunately one little Mr hasn’t joined us for breakfast the beautiful Eurasian jay called JJ has passed away in the night, JJ was disabled and no longer able to be wild but that didn’t stop him beating me up and bouncing from perch to perch. He’s been here a little over 7 months so it’s going to be weird not hearing his little calls, they sound like tiny falcons and he’d always make me jump with his random screams when I do cleans I could be nowhere near him and he’d screetch at the top of his lungs and scare the life out of me😅 I’m unsure on why he’s passed but he was fully grown coming here and again has been with me 7 months so I believe it’s an age thing as he demolished peanuts and calci worms yesterday and had a bath, he was in his little straw nest and looked really peaceful. I knew when I went out he was gone before looking for him as like clockwork he’d be on his perch watching me like a hawk go to his part of the food shelf😓

Todays newbie, we were meant to have 5 but unfortunately 3 didn’t make it here and one passed away as she got here😓 Anyway this is Ethan the very sleepy little dove fledgling found in a hedge, he’s very almost to release point all his tail is still encased but other than that he’s perfect. We’ve crop fed some formula so I know he’s full and hydrated but he should eat by himself so I’ve left a little dove mix in with him just incase. After his feed he’s been very sleepy but I would be after the day he’s had too🫶🏻 He does have a heated nest but he’s decided the seeds are better suited, we can’t please them all😂 Thank you Georgia one of my amazing friends that goes here there and everywhere when she can🫶🏻

There’s a teeny tiny collard dove fledgy in Cardiff needing to come here or to another rehabber please🫶🏻 I can help with fuel costs❤️ I’m in treherbert❤️

A huge thank you to Alley Cats Rescue for the donation. Thought I’d take two minutes just to plug their page. Jay was my first ever donator she gave me a shoe box to use as a nest for Billie the blackbird (the ogs will remember her😅) with some newspapers, tea towels and other little bits and not only that she came to my rescue when her house was already filled with her own cats and a feral cat that was abandoned up the mountain in her bathroom, I had a knock at the door a good 6 months ago and by the time I’d gotten to the door no one was there just an air fryer box with a little kitten inside I was clueless and panicked and within the hour she came to the rescue and took the kitten on got her medically sorted and rehomed her it’s this reason my address is no longer on the pinned post. A huge thank you I’ll drop the bits and pieces for your shop when I pass in the morning🫶🏻

Evening all, as expected the newbie we had yesterday hasn’t made it he’s not long passed away due to injuries I didn’t try to take a photo I was just trying to be as hands off and non stress inducing as I could. The little blackbird had been rather beaten up and brought home😓 The little rabbit has completely stolen all of our hearts🤭 Beyond a softie and loves nothing more than cuddling up and all the affection being thrown at her😂 There’s nothing new to report other than I’ve gone a full 24 hours without being attacked by Gilbert the crow which will change tomorrow with the full clean outs due😅 I hope you all have a lovely night/morning I’m trying to find a balance with social media and all the other needs here, there and everywhere with the wide variety of animals everyone needs different things🥰

I wish I could voice record the day I’ve had😂🫣 Clive and Gilbert aren’t friends they met and made sure the whole street heard about it, Gilbert’s had to go into a fabric enclosure as he’s getting out of bars no matter how small the gaps are and he’s got to rest his wing so we can’t have him free roaming yet. I went to feed the rats and there was one tucked up sound asleep where he should be, the other 8 had gotten out of a half inch gap that is half the size of their heads and decided to sleep in the charity bag of clothes that was up against a radiator, I found them after ripping the room apart and they were right next to where they were originally, I was going to relax but I’ll now have to disinfect the spare room. Lesson learnt they’re now in a very tall plastic tote😅 We have had a newbie but I’ll introduce her tomorrow as she’s been very much had by a cat and I’m unsure what the night is going to bring😓 The abandoned rabbit is booked in Wednesday morning to have all her checks she brought a little drama with her I’ll explain that again. All in a days work and what a long day it’s been🤭 I’ve added a video of the trouble makers so you can see how big they’ve gotten😶‍🌫️

As promised yesterday a better photo of big boy Gilbert. He absolutely mutilated my finger earlier on so he’s really feeling himself😂 His wing seems to be a lot better again today and he has started to flap both so he may be back out sooner than anticipated🫶🏻 He’s eating us out of nuts and dried insects and all round I fully believe he’ll make a full recovery and be back with his mate in time for babies🥰 Everyone else is also doing well, Frank is settling lovely and Messy the bull finches tail is starting to get there too❤️ I’ll take an updated baby rat clan photo tomorrow I noticed today just how big they’re looking😅 Thank you all for the continued support and kind words it’s a tough thing to do and I’d be lost without you all🫶🏻

I can’t help but to feel mad all the time, there are countless little non profit rescues up and down Wales that will take your no longer wanted pet. No donation required you can stop, drop and run no questions asked as long as the animal is safe we do not care, vets will also pass unwanted pets along to us. I have rehomed or helped to rehome almost 100 animals in 8ish months, it’s what I’m here for.

This little lady was left all by herself in a garden with a broken hutch, with no food or water source her owners moved home and left her behind🤬 Thankfully a neighbour is rabbit mad and has house rabbits so when she’d realised they’d moved home and abandoned her took her home fed and watered her and contacted myself she was by herself in the wet and cold for days not that that’s the neighbours fault as soon as she clicked what the situation was she rescued her. If messaged I can recommend myself along with 3 other rescues (halfway house animal rescue, notions rescue, socolex) off the top of my head that are dotted along different parts of south/west wales that would have taken her in a heartbeat if we were told it’s either she comes to us or she’s left in a boxed in garden with nothing.

On a more positive note she’s now in my home that has absolutely everything she could desire and is currently in a 6ft run with a selection of goodies. We’ll be going to the vets Monday for a health check, vaccinations and if she hasn’t been already spayed. If anyone would like to help with vet fees that would be hugely appreciated🫶🏻

Second newbie of the day, beautiful Gilbert the very shouty crow. The high winds have caused him to bump his wing but thankfully it’s all intact just a little sore and has improved since being with finder and he’s now starting to use it so we’ve got a little pain relief on the go to make sure he’s as comfortable as possible, he ate some eggs with finder so I’ll be leaving him alone this evening now and I’ll get a better photo of him in the morning🫶🏻 All going well finder will pick him back up and put him back in the lane by her garden🥰

Gorgeous boy Frank. This little one has a little bit of a back story and has received nothing but the best care from a wonderful gentleman for the last 6 weeks. Frank was found Boxing Day suffering with PMV, really not in a good way and Ian nursed him back to health. He’s been amazing and came to me for advice and hopeful he could be released and although for the most part Franks doing amazing he does still have instances of the nervous system “flare ups” which would have subsided by now if he’d have been suitable for release so Frank will now have to have a helping hand, if he has one of these “flare ups” in the wild he won’t survive as they have difficulty eating and become easy prey and in some instances can’t fly. Franks done his 6 weeks pmv shed with Ian so none of our residents will be at risk of catching it but he’ll be indoors for the night so I can watch symptoms, I’ve also given him a full MOT. Tomorrow he’ll meet the clan and be able to have a good natter as he’s talked my ear off already😂

Evening all, sorry about the off and on presence I am here just lots going on between all the animals and my personal life. Everyone is doing fab all 5 pigeons came for a feed today which always makes my day brighter and looking a lovely weight if I do say so myself😉😂.

As some of you may or may not know bird flu is present in Wales and this means I’ve got to be extremely careful.

Unfortunately this will hugely change the way I do things until the risk of transmission decreases as I have to protect who we have and there are dozens relying on me to keep them safe.

I will not be accepting water birds (ducks, geese or seagulls) as they’re known to be at a higher risk to transmit and spread the disease.

Unfortunately I will not be able to accept any birds showing symptoms which is a huge blow as symptoms cover a lot of our usual day to day intake but I can’t risk it being something more sinister as it will not only kill who we have, it doesn’t disappear it’s known to stay around for 12 months so I’d be unable to take absolutely anything on after that should a case come here. This means I’d basically just be able to take on cases where bird flu is 100% not present which is basically babies and foot issues or if you’ve physically seen the bird become injured.

There is no cure for bird flu I physically couldn’t help under any circumstances.

If you find a bird displaying symptoms please call 03003 038 268, do not touch the bird although low there are chances for it to be passed to yourself.

Symptoms are as follows…

Sudden death: Birds may die without warning.

Swollen head: The head of the bird may swell.

Closed eyes: The eyes of the bird may be closed and watery.

Breathing difficulties: The bird may gasp for air, snicker, cough, gurgle, or rattle.

Drooping wings: The wings of the bird may droop to the floor.

Discolored comb and wattles: The comb and wattles of the bird may turn blue or purple.

Diarrhea: The bird may have diarrhea.

Lack of appetite: The bird may not want to eat.

Droppings: The droppings of the bird may be discolored or watery.

Head and neck twisting: The bird may twist its head and neck.

Bleeding: The bird may have bleeding on its legs or under its skin.
