Morning all, little Grebe the duck made the night. The cut to his face is already looking miles better than it did yesterday I’ll give it a gentle clean today I don’t want to mess with it too much to irritate it and possibly open it back up and it’s closed lovely and looks as good as it can🫶🏻 Now that I know it’s going to heal would people be ok if I popped up one of the videos I took yesterday of him? Again there will be a visable injury one he’s now no longer in pain with and again is already showing signs of healing nice. I don’t want to upset anyone with a graphic image though. Everyone else made the night he had 40kg of bird food dropped off 20kg pigeon and 20kg wild bird seed the pigeons won’t last very long they adore the mix so it’ll be about 2ish weeks and I’ll have to order more😂 Everyone else is also doing fab all had breakfast both seagulls have got that adult “laughing” scream down to a t and I love it. Clive proper throws his head back to do it, really makes me giggle. I will be doing my two weekly proper health check tomorrow go over all limbs and wings check throats and so on and see if anyone is showing any signs of being well and able to go back out into the big wide world as we’re meant to have 1/2 fine days next week and it being a really mild temp. That’s my ramble done, have a lovely Thursday all I won’t be around this afternoon I have school fete with my little lad🫶🏻

When it’s freezing outside, raining cats and dogs and you’re only worry is what colour your next fleece bedding is going to be and what flavour pouch/biscuits is coming today😂 None of the hedgehogs will be my friends tomorrow as it’s going to be bath day for them all, one has dry skin still and the others just need one😂 I will try to get a video if I manage one, I try to capture as much as I can but honestly it slips my mind until after I’ve done said task, someone remind me on the morning post. Thankfully I used to have a domestic African Pygmy who was the smelliest girl always annointed with her poops and whatever else she’d find around that was gross, so I had hedgehog bath experience way before any of this😅 Have a lovely evening all the hedgehogs were the last on my list to clean out list for today, my hamsters and Rusty are on the list for tomorrow and then back to the garage rotation. Little duck is doing well fingers crossed nothing changes over night, still eating and drinking lovely everytime he sees me his little tail wiggles so I’m going to take that as he loves me and never wants to leave😂🫶🏻

I know they’re wild here as well and he has all the wild traits but I just want to be sure as I was right about the last one who almost came here but she had a home. If anyone is down a Muscovy duck please reach out I will need proof, he was in the Trehaford area🫶🏻 He’ll be here until I figure out where has space as all the water bird rescues told finder to just get him put to sleep due to space issues😓

Grebe the Muscovy Duck is here, he’s eaten and had a good drink already I have videos of him eating and drinking but people may find his injury upsetting and I can’t figure out how to cover the cut while he moves. He was blown into a window while flying head first he’s absolutely perfect other than the cut. He’s had his pain relief beautifully and I’ll be cleaning out his wound in a little bit. Currently waddling around my kitchen while I sort the largest enclosure I’ve got for him and get him a big enough bath filled🫶🏻

18/12/2024

Morning all, starting the day with a plea for assistance there is a Muscovy Duck in Trehafod that has flown into a window with the wind behind him so he’s stunned himself pretty good I can’t see any visable injuries in the photo, he’s currently in her front garden if anyone can help get him here🫶🏻

2 turned into 3 losses, we’ve lost one of the older Percy pigeons, the buzzard and Sorrow the magpie😮‍💨 they were all here for breakfast it shocks me when they eat breakfast but are no longer here when I do late morning checks as it’s usually the in night they go😓 The magpies really shocked me as he was showing all the signs of being ready to go again and bit me from arrival until breakfast this morning the poor dab. Other than those 3 no other changes were still I’d say running at full even though I keep saying yes to more😂 The garage is really starting to take shape again but I want a lower workload over Christmas as I’ll still have to go out 3/4 times a day to do feeds and cleans on Christmas Eve and day so I just want that time over those two days as low as possible having a 2 and 3 year old🙂

Today’s newbie, pre planned little lucky. She’s been with finder the last 5 weeks thought to be a bird of prey victim she was plucked but no injuries thankfully. She’s not flying yet may be able to get her there in time though🫶🏻 We’ve had two losses after breakfast time I’m waiting on finders to reply before saying anything on here😮‍💨

Morning all nothing new to report again, rather than doing little posts saying “nothing new” I think I’ll try to put out little bits of good to know information.

Fitting with the really cold weather that’ll soon turn the ground solid making it that little bit harder for them to find food, today I’ll go with what to feed each group of animals to keep them nice and plump in a healthy way people still drop me birds with a slice of bread in with them, the thought is lovely but it’s an empty filler with 0 nutritional value and can also cause digestion issues.

Your little typical garden birds are easy as you’ll know with suet, wildbird seeds, sunflower hearts and peanuts/ground peanuts all really fatty and really good for giving them the fats to keep warm.

There are some berry eating birds such as the red wing thrush that’ll stick to pretty much just berry’s but you can pop out little bits to help them out a chopped up bit of apple is a good substitute and will really help if they can’t find berries🙂

Pigeons will also eat bird seeds but I feed a mix which also has dried peas and corn, they’ll also eat fresh peas and corn and absolutely adore it.

Seagulls will eat just about everything but soaked dog/cat food does the trick or wet pouches/tins if your feeling extra nice they adore sardines I go with the ones in oil as they’re filled with goodness.

Corvids (thanks Rhiannon😂🫣) Suet I’ve found is their go to, along with monkey nuts and dried insects such as mealworms, calciworms and black solder fly larvae. One of our recents Carl was also partial to apple and soft boiled eggs.

Hedgehogs then plain water and cat kibble (wet or dry), if you wanted to put down a little more you can also get dried calciworms (not to be confused with mealworms).

If you choose to feed foxes, do so responsibly and from a safe distance to avoid making them overly comfortable around humans, you can offer cooked or raw meats but stick to unprocessed so the scraps from your whole chicken and that kind of thing. Whole eggs in shell can also be offered boiled or raw.

Squirrels then are just nut lovers, peanuts and pine nuts are a favourite they also love sunflower seeds and mealworms (dried, never feed live bugs to wild animals just like the typical squirrel you see they’re invasive and can cause damage to our ecosystem)

If I’ve missed any or you’d like a specific kind of bird let me know🙂

Photograph is not mine it’s from the Scottish wildlife trust🙂

Evening all, nothing new to report everyone’s still here and doing as they should. Little ET the buzzard will be moving along in the next 48 hours if the improvements continue just like every other bird of prey he’s mastered playing dead and giving me palpitations when I peep in 😅 He’s a dream to handle minus when doing his eye drops, he is not a fan in the slightest of that but he’s a big friendly giant bless him. We had a donation Saturday so I’ve got some money back in the pot toward the next lot of antibiotics and some bits and pieces arriving some bits that I had on the wish list that were on the more expensive side like the cereal containers that were for some reason £18🥶 and some bits for me to fix some of the damage along with 20kg of pigeon mix, they absolutely demolish food I’ll make a note on how long 20kg takes them to get through so I can figure out a repeat order subscription I think they’ll forever be the most common intake with breeding all year round and the sheer amount of numbers we have of them where we live. Fingers crossed now we’ll have a run of dry weather soon and the seagulls can be released they’re getting rather impatient now but I’ve seen them both fly they’re also water proofed I just don’t want them going out in the wind and rain when they’ve only known shelter, that’s the maternal instinct in me I think😂

Went to take the kids to see Father Christmas and came home with a buzzard (not found by self received a call), wings and legs are perfect but he’s been attacked by another bird so I’m hoping foods been real low and we can feed him back up and get those feathers back through. He’s got a lot of fight in him I popped him in a box and he burst through it so I made a make shift bird of prey hood with a blanket…. for this reason I have called him ET😅 He has very minimal external damage, mostly feather and a little bit of a swollen eye where a crow tried his luck so fingers crossed now he’ll be off with one of the bird of prey guys in the next couple of days after some good food and rest🥰

Searched high and low for Clive to have dinner and he’d somehow got himself into one of the seed barrels (I must’ve not fastened the lid)😂 These birds forever get themself into awkward situations when I wonder how they end up here they do something like this and I’m reminded why they end up here. Not stupid just 0 common sense thankfully got another 20kg of bird seed arriving tomorrow as this one’s ruined what’s left in here😅 He’s fine he ate dinner like nothing had happened and screamed at me for helping him out of the barrel😂

Last nights little guy, in typical fashion I have cut hands magpies are by far the worst to handle they put everything to shame even the falcons😂. He’s been called sorrow by the vet. Initially thought to be neuro but I think he’s just flown into a window and needed a safe resting place as he can fly, hop, eat and drink so it’ll be a full day of monitoring today and all going well he may be back out tomorrow weather permitting🫶🏻

Brought to tears again, we’ve had wishlist parcels from Liz and Gemma of heating supplies lots of instant warmers that are gentle through fleece perfect for shock and babies and some mini hot water bottles and one from woody the woodpeckers finder lots of peanuts for the jay and it’s a reusable tub so other corvids and nut eating birds will enjoy too. One day week before last one of our followers Wendy messaged and asked exactly what we needed after the flood and she went out of her way to clear it basically😭 Even a little side table that I can dedicate to just baby feeding equipment so I don’t have to look all over for tiny tubes. Lots of gull and hedgehog friendly food so they’ll be very happy😂 Not only did she get all of this but last Wednesday I lost a very important lady in my life one of three of the most important women and she kept all this in her house/car until I was ready to have it up here I feel bad now as I didn’t realise just how much she’d gotten for us😅 Thank you also for the bereavement card it caught me off guard as I thought it was a Christmas card but thank you for your wishes and sympathy. Myself and Wendy have a weird bond we “shared” a baby, a rescue I wouldn’t introduce her due to difference in options but her name was Leoni and she had a disability that we were figuring out between us on next steps but after around 6 weeks of overcoming so many issues she went over the rainbow bridge but we’d talk daily about little Leoni and we were both cheering at stupid o’clock in the morning when she opened her eyes for the first time😅 I’ve met some truly amazing people over the last 6 months🫶🏻 I can’t wait to get all this out the garage and transform it back to a functioning space🫶🏻 It’s like Christmas came early⛄️ We have a newbie on the way I’m not going to introduce her until the morning as she’s been with my cousin who’s a vet and it looks as if there’s something neuro so we’ll see how she goes tonight and hopefully we’ll have a newbie to introduce to you all after breakfast🙂 I am still after old clean bedding sheets/pillowcases etc so I can stockpile that again to the point I had it before😅

The feeling is like nothing I ever felt, watching them go off and carry on their life or holding them and comforting them in their finals hours or minutes I can confidently say easily in the hundreds. By far the hardest thing I’ve ever done everyday there’s a knock back somewhere but it’s beyond worth it🥹 Belle will forever be my most memorable I think, I was 100% sure I was just making her comfortable for the night and she’d be gone the next morning she couldn’t move never mind fly with a double leg, wing and chest injury. My heart sank when I checked her over but off she went 6 weeks later like nothing ever happened🫶🏻

Afternoon all, no losses today🫶🏻 Chip the 11 year old pigeon very much likes some fleece😂 Being an old girl I’ve gone a little over board with keeping her warm but she’s taken a shine to some fleece pillow cases I had donated a while back. The babies have been given the same fleece cases they’re not all that bothered but are cuddled up in them when I go out before they clock me and cry for food🫶🏻 Stay warm everyone it’s horrid out there today🥶 Photo of one of our babies for attention🥰

Little woody the woodpecker and Weather the collard dove have passed away this afternoon unfortunately, I was unsure as to what had caused weathers injuries but it was probably a cat so I’d been half expecting it. Woody had eaten a little suet earlier on and had more to drink so wasn’t expecting him to go but he looks as if he’s asleep which is comforting. If anyone can point me in the direction of corvid sanctuaries little JJ the Jay will not be able to return to the wild, he can fly but not well enough that he’d be ok in the wild🫶🏻 I need to take some space back as I’ve got 7/8 birds that can’t be released but being a corvid I should imagine there’s someone somewhere who runs a sanctuary for them🙂
