Dove
Todays newbie, we were meant to have 5 but unfortunately 3 didn’t make it here and one passed away as she got here😓 Anyway this is Ethan the very sleepy little dove fledgling found in a hedge, he’s very almost to release point all his tail is still encased but other than that he’s perfect. We’ve crop fed some formula so I know he’s full and hydrated but he should eat by himself so I’ve left a little dove mix in with him just incase. After his feed he’s been very sleepy but I would be after the day he’s had too🫶🏻 He does have a heated nest but he’s decided the seeds are better suited, we can’t please them all😂 Thank you Georgia one of my amazing friends that goes here there and everywhere when she can🫶🏻
Rats
I wish I could voice record the day I’ve had😂🫣 Clive and Gilbert aren’t friends they met and made sure the whole street heard about it, Gilbert’s had to go into a fabric enclosure as he’s getting out of bars no matter how small the gaps are and he’s got to rest his wing so we can’t have him free roaming yet. I went to feed the rats and there was one tucked up sound asleep where he should be, the other 8 had gotten out of a half inch gap that is half the size of their heads and decided to sleep in the charity bag of clothes that was up against a radiator, I found them after ripping the room apart and they were right next to where they were originally, I was going to relax but I’ll now have to disinfect the spare room. Lesson learnt they’re now in a very tall plastic tote😅 We have had a newbie but I’ll introduce her tomorrow as she’s been very much had by a cat and I’m unsure what the night is going to bring😓 The abandoned rabbit is booked in Wednesday morning to have all her checks she brought a little drama with her I’ll explain that again. All in a days work and what a long day it’s been🤭 I’ve added a video of the trouble makers so you can see how big they’ve gotten😶🌫️
Pigeons
Evening all, sorry about the off and on presence I am here just lots going on between all the animals and my personal life. Everyone is doing fab all 5 pigeons came for a feed today which always makes my day brighter and looking a lovely weight if I do say so myself😉😂.
As some of you may or may not know bird flu is present in Wales and this means I’ve got to be extremely careful.
Unfortunately this will hugely change the way I do things until the risk of transmission decreases as I have to protect who we have and there are dozens relying on me to keep them safe.
I will not be accepting water birds (ducks, geese or seagulls) as they’re known to be at a higher risk to transmit and spread the disease.
Unfortunately I will not be able to accept any birds showing symptoms which is a huge blow as symptoms cover a lot of our usual day to day intake but I can’t risk it being something more sinister as it will not only kill who we have, it doesn’t disappear it’s known to stay around for 12 months so I’d be unable to take absolutely anything on after that should a case come here. This means I’d basically just be able to take on cases where bird flu is 100% not present which is basically babies and foot issues or if you’ve physically seen the bird become injured.
There is no cure for bird flu I physically couldn’t help under any circumstances.
If you find a bird displaying symptoms please call 03003 038 268, do not touch the bird although low there are chances for it to be passed to yourself.
Symptoms are as follows…
Sudden death: Birds may die without warning.
Swollen head: The head of the bird may swell.
Closed eyes: The eyes of the bird may be closed and watery.
Breathing difficulties: The bird may gasp for air, snicker, cough, gurgle, or rattle.
Drooping wings: The wings of the bird may droop to the floor.
Discolored comb and wattles: The comb and wattles of the bird may turn blue or purple.
Diarrhea: The bird may have
Babies
They’re growing quicker than I can keep up with, we still teat feed as they’re still milk dependant but I do have a little formula mix which they’re lapping from and they absolutely adore food, fruit, veggies and meat. At the moment meat isn’t as often as I’ve got to cook it incase I get bitten but cooked meats aren’t ideal as raw but again got to think of my safety. They’ve made a nest behind their nest😂 and are absolutely petrified of all the extra space at the moment but they’re getting more confident by the minute. Extremely proud I’ve not lost a single one being bottle fed the risks were huge and we’ve so far overcome everything🫶🏻 Everyone else also made the night and I’ve got to wrestle the smallest yet feistiest birds for their meds😅 Robins are meaner than magpies😂
Clive
Same seagull, a different windowsill. I had company while I did the washing up yesterday and he had the leftover peas before going back into the garage. I don’t know if he’s going to leave again so I may take him to the beach to be with others of his own kind and he’ll have a proper space to be a seagull in then, although I will miss my little security guard he keeps all the cats away fair play to him😂 Everyone made the night and is doing awesome, I think Saturday will be pigeon release day🥳
Babies
Another little milestone hit today while giving the bullfinch some apple I thought I’d try the babies with some and they all enjoyed it, they’re now also going to the toilet by themselves, over night they’ve grown up😂 Their wake window has been a lot bigger today so I’ll be moving them into a bigger enclosure tomorrow and offer them some breakfast along side their milk🥰 In two/three weeks I’ll no longer be needed, it’s mad only 4 days ago they were blind, deaf and completely dependant. We’ve over come the biggest hurdles we still risk aspiration but that risk will disappear when they move over to a bowl🫶🏻
Bullfinch
Super low quality video but I didn’t want to take another as he’s a tiny stress head, this little bullfinch is currently missing a tail as a cat decided he’d be a nice toy😮💨 He’s started antibiotics I’m staying away from pain relief as it’s cosmetic damage rather than actual damage which I’m praying will go in our favour. He’s rather lively and eats and drinks lovely I’ll be gathering some berries on the school run for him, don’t worry I will leave a suet ball so the wild birds still have grub🫶🏻 Everyone else is also doing as they should be❤️ A huge thank you to Patrick who kept him safe, took him to the vet who didn’t even notice he had a missing tail😅 and took him home until he could come here💪🏻
Babies
Morning all, no losses again🫶🏻 The rat pack is still going strong💪🏻 Everyone now has open eyes and ears and we’ve moved over to an extra small teat rather than the paint brush so they’re taking a little more but still not clearing 3mls between them😅 They still have huge naps between feeds so I’m going to keep them in the little nest, they do have walking room and a little climbing room but for 99% of the day minus feeds they’re sleeping, I think by Friday they’ll be in a larger enclosure and I’ll be able to introduce some soft solids. They’ve started to clean eachother and I’m sure I heard the first squabble earlier too😅 I’ll also be able to cut out the middle of the night feed Friday🥳 I’m hoping to release the three baby pigeons this week when the rain starts to ease as the nights are becoming a little more mild too🫶🏻 Fingers crossed for a good week all round.
Babies
Morning all, we’ll start with the bad news Agnes the troublesome pigeon has passed away, when she arrived we knew she had issues which meant she wouldn’t be wild again but she went down hill soon after bless her so hasn’t joined us for breakfast😮💨 All the little newbies made the night this video was just after a feed they all argue over who’s going to be in the corner until they all succumb to the milk coma😂 I’ve got huge hopes for these little ones I know I shouldn’t😅 But I’ve got a really good feeling about them all the little runt of the litter drinks the most so I’m hoping as I said yesterday she’ll catch up now feeds are one to one rather than whoever can get to mum quickest before she goes off again🫶🏻
Babies
I know I said yesterday I’m not taking any but if these little ones didn’t have a full belly today they wouldn’t have seen this evening. A little sooner than anticipated I’ve made the first formula batch of the year and got the paint brushes out. Your eyes don’t deceive you that is 36 micro paws you see. I was expecting 3 and there’s 9, the finder did everything right they didn’t stop to count them they scooped them up and put them in a safe place hoping mum would return during the night but she hasn’t. All have been warmed and had their tiny bellies filled so hopefully in just 2/3 short weeks they’ll be fully weaned, we’re at the “hopper stage” no open eyes but all full of fur and got their tiny teeth buds so anywhere from 9-15ish days old🫶🏻
Pigeons
That is Rusty whistling you can hear😂 Whenever I go to the garage I hear flapping just outside😂 I stand and watch them for as long as they’ll let me I always stand there and toot my own horn and think “wow, they’re here because of me” Maverick and Buddy were more easy cases they just needed intense weight gain and released themselves😅 But Gary was a real touch and go one with open wounds to his back and chest, he was a bit of a mess. Whenever I see any of the ones I release I just think wow, the same when the little white dove came back and fourth for the month prior to bonfire night I fixed her wing and she was able to be out and do her thing. I see these guys along with two others every day if I’m not in the garage when they come to feed they’ll go to my living room window to make sure I know they’re waiting😂 While walking back from the school I noticed lots of little birds I hadn’t seen since October time and lots of “singing” establishing territory and finding mates I believe, baby season is very almost here🫶🏻
