After much thought and discussion there are some big changes coming to The Great OutPaws 🐶🐾

Over the coming weeks and months we will be moving into more structured and focused work.

We will be continuing with our structured group walks for our current clients and adding new training services moving forward.

My love for working with doggies has only grown with this business and after seeing the progress I’ve made with some of our newer doggies I’ve discovered a love for more focused training work.

We will release the update to the current services first and then be adding our training services over the coming few weeks.

We look forward to this next step and can’t wait to help your puppies progress 🐶

I complain about the falls all the time.

About the condition it’s left in after every hot day since it was discovered by everyone in the north east during lockdown.

I walk and train my work doggies and my personal doggy down here and unfortunately, lots of the times I pass I’m not in a position nor have the time to help however, I complain endlessly.

This evening I was out with Coops and he picked three empty plastic bottles out of the river further down so I guessed the falls was a mess again.

When I got to the falls there was litter scattered from empty bottles to a disposable BBQ, no where near as bad as we’ve seen it left but still more than there should be - which is none.

This is probably a permanent issue we face as a community now so my point is: If you can, don’t just complain please help keep our town looking as beautiful as it should.

I share this solely in the hopes that it inspires others that we can keep our home looking beautiful no matter what state others leave it in.💚

Just a little update for you all. Everyone’s walks have been adjusted accordingly and hopefully I’ll be back to normal pup walking week beginning 12th February 💚

As many of you noticed on Friday and Saturday last week I was not present in the store.

Unfortunately I was admitted to hospital due to an emergency and whilst I have thankfully been released home today, I’m still very unwell.

In this time Simon has been managing both businesses with the kind help of Georgina and our lovely shop assistant Abi.

So far all hours should be as normal this week but at this point we are taking things day by day so if there are any changes to opening times etc we will give you as much notice as possible.

I’m now back in the excellent care of Simon and Cooper after a tough few days and will hopefully be back in the shop for Aunty Hayley cuddles in no time 💚

Over the last year or so we have had to turn away 90% of our enquiries due to being at capacity.

We know a lot of people enquire due to our style of walking and working on foundational behaviours. However, due to also specialising in working with reactive dogs and dogs with significant behavioural issues our spots for new dogs are few and far between.

We have however, made the decision to review the business over the next couple of weeks to open up 20 new regular walking spots by expanding our availability for structured group walks.

We will pop a little post up when we are accepting new dogs and we look forward to helping you and your dog develop in their walking/training needs.

The Great OutPaws is about to become even greater so keep your eyes peeled 👀

Puppy Socialisation - it’s not what it was and it’s 2023 so let’s update our knowledge.

Once you’ve finished my post please make sure to read the post from Canmore K9 Club in full this is massively important!!

We are very passionate, not only about the socialisation of puppies, but dogs of all ages.

We are constantly dealing with behavioural issues due to dogs being subjected to unstructured environments that owners send their dogs to with the best faith that dog care providers only offer services that they have full knowledge of.

Dog socialisation isn’t throwing 5-10 dogs into a room off lead and letting them work it out for themselves it’s slow and managed introductions over time.

Our group walks take months to put together and these are adult dogs never mind puppies that are learning how to dog!!

Structured dog services are the only services we will ever provide and we don’t take on clients that we can’t manage and help further.

It’s 2023. Let’s do better for our dogs.

THE IMPORTANCE OF THOUGHTFUL PUPPY SOCIALISATION: why I’m cautious about sending puppies to socialisation parties.

This is going to be a long one, so please bear with me. If you have a puppy or are planning on getting one, then this is definitely worth a read!!!

I have recently seen an increase in “puppy socialisation parties” within my local area, usually advertised by doggy day cares or dog walkers.

When it comes to puppy socialisation parties, I believe it is essential to approach them with caution. While the concept of allowing puppies to interact with one another is enticing, there are a few reasons why you should be pursuing alternative socialisation methods:

1. Overstimulation and Fear: socialisation parties can be overwhelming for young puppies. The large number of unfamiliar dogs and people in a confined place will likely lead to overstimulation and sometimes even fear, which will negatively impact your puppy’s early experiences with socialisation.
2. Uncontrolled behaviour: socialisation parties usually guarantee an uncontrolled environment, increasing the risk of improper or aggressive interactions among puppies. This will lead to negative associations with other dogs, causing possible behavioural problems as your puppy develops.
3. Inadequate supervision: while some socialisation parties might claim to have supervision, it can be challenging for the organisers to monitor every interaction closely. This lack of individualised supervision could lead to missed signs of stress or discomfort from your puppy.
4. Difference in play styles: not all puppies have the same play styles. Some may be more reserved, while others might be exuberantly playful. Without careful observation and consideration of each puppy’s unique personality, misunderstandings or conflicts could arise. Puppies also lack boundaries and don’t have any understanding of healthy play, allowing puppies to learn from one another can teach them unhealthy boundaries as they develop into adult dogs

Puppies have a short exposure period between the age of 8-16 weeks, it is important that your puppy has positive associations to new experiences.

Instead of puppy socialisation parties prioritise your puppy’s well being and individual needs, by providing a more tailored approach that fosters positive associations and lays foundations for a confident, well-adjusted and happy adult dog.

Here are a few ways you can achieve this:

1. One-to-one play dates: arrange playdates with social and stable adult dogs that you know. This allows your puppy to interact with a few selected playmates in a controlled and supervised environment.
2. Neutrality walks: arrange walks with a few selected stable and social dogs that you know. Don’t allow a lot of interactions between your puppy and the dogs, but instead focus on your puppy co-existing with other dogs and people, while also working on your puppy’s engagement towards you.
3. Positive exposure: introduce your puppy to different environments, sounds, textures and people, gradually increasing exposure to new experiences while ensuring they feel safe and secure.
4. Puppy training classes: attend a puppy class that focus’ on correct socialisation, exposure and structure, as well as laying correct obedience foundations.

Don’t be discouraged if you have taken your puppy to a socialisation party, finding the right puppy class and socialisation experiences can be difficult with all the different information out there.

That’s why I am currently working on an online puppy course that focuses more on a tailored approach, prioritising on creating confident, well adjusted and happy adult dogs!

I am currently looking for a few individual clients that have a puppy I can use to create context for my course. In return you will receive first access to the course and discounted sessions!!!

Puppy’s must be between 8-16 weeks old.

If you’d be interested in your puppy being used for content or you’d like access to the course when it is available, please email [email protected] 🐾 🐶
