Luna "rounding up" the Event Team dogs!
FIRST LOOK AT OUR SUNDAY 9 JUNE RICHMOND WORKSHOP
Thank you to all of our lovely attendees who joined us at CentreBarks in Richmond, North Yorkshire on Sunday for a Functional Character workshop.
.
We've got lots of great pictures and videos to share with you, and have decided to start off today's post with a video of Luna!
.
In this first video, in a very Border Collie-esque fashion, Luna the Chihuahua can be seen “rounding up” the Event Team dogs! Luna was assessed as a Defender Functional Character. 🥰
Ember meets Sophie
See how in this third video Ember moves out of Sophie’s personal space when she turns towards her.

EMBER THE FOLLOWER MEETS SOPHIE THE GUIDE👑
In this first video we have Ember who is proudly wearing her blue Follower bandana. We decided to introduce Ember to Willow, one of the Canine Event Team Followers. Willow's introduction suggested that Ember was potentially a Follower too.
.
On paper it had seemed that Ember may be a Defender, but the immediacy of her play once Willow came into the work area, informed us that she was a Follower!😊
.
In the second video, Ember is so excited that she goes to play with Sophie the Guide. Sophie reminds Ember of her status and Ember immediately backs off and re-engages with Willow.

Benefits of Knowing & Understanding Canine Functional Characters
BENEFITS OF
KNOWING & UNDERSTANDING
CANINE FUNCTIONAL CHARACTERS
.
In this video, Heather is explaining what the benefits of understanding Functional Characters are. This knowledge can change the way we understand our dogs, by building a stronger bond and understanding them on a deeper level.
.
Heather recalls a recent situation with one of her friends who has a dog that was labeled as "aggressive", and was told that the dog should wear a shock collar. ☹️
.
This dog was assessed by Heather, and their Functional Character was revealed which allowed the guardian to be able to care for her dog group in a whole new way. Functional Characters explains the dynamics of group composition, and can prevent conflict in multi-dog households.
.
Can you guess which Functional Character the dog is? Check out the video to see if your guess is correct!🐾

Zak & KD
WALKIES?!😁🐾
At the moment Heather is juggling Ava who is 7 years old and KD who will be 12 next month. As you can imagine, Ava can walk a lot longer and is much faster than KD, so it means that sometimes they have to walked separately to ensure that both of their needs are met.
.
It's extremely important to take into consideration the temperature when walking any dog, but especially a senior dog. If it's a hot day, then the walk should be made much shorter.
.
It's a good idea to plan your walk so that towards the end of your route, there is a stream or lake for your dog to dip in to cool down, splash and have a drink.
.
KD and Canine Event Team member Zak (who is also 11 years old) prefer to walk on grass and soft verges, compared to gravel. Much comfier for the old paws! 🐾
.
If you have a dog under 2 years old, you will also need to be aware of the amount and distance of your walks.
Too much exercise can affect the development of a young dogs growth plates (the areas of cartilage at the ends of the leg bones). An injury or damage to the growth plates before they are mature can cause deformities and problems with healing. This may affect the pup’s movement for the rest of their life.
.
While your pup’s paws are young and soft, they will be at greater risk of damaging their paws, particularly if running around too much on hard ground. In hot weather take even more precautions, avoiding midday walks and direct sunlight in high temperatures.
.
A good rule of thumb on how generally long to walk a puppy is a ratio of five minutes exercise per month of age (up to twice a day) until the puppy is fully grown, i.e. 15 minutes (up to twice a day) when three months old, 20 minutes when four months old etc. Once they are fully grown, they can go out for much longer, but remember this is all dependent on breed, temperament, health and many other variables. There is never a one size fits all approach.

KEEPING YOUR DOG SAFE WHILST ON A LONGER WALK🐕🚶♀️
Last Thursday we posted our favourite North Yorkshire dog friendly walks, and today we want to talk about how to keep your dog safe on a longer walk.
.
One of the most important considerations for your dog’s health is to make sure that they always have access to clean water. Dogs can’t regulate their temperature like humans do, so they’re naturally susceptible to heatstroke and dehydration, especially brachycephalic breeds like Pugs and French Bulldogs.
This is especially important during long walks and the warmer days of the year, so before you leave the house, you should always ensure that you have a suitable bowl and a full water bottle. 💦
.
Long walks provide an excellent opportunity to play with your pup, so making sure that you have a few toys on hand is always a good idea. Games like fetch provide great exercise for your dog and strengthen the bond that the two of you share.
If you’re still training your dog, be that for fun or obedience, you’ll need to remember to bring along some treats which you can dish out as a reward for good behaviour. You should also bring some food with a bit of protein on long walks, as your pup may need a boost of energy as they enjoy their needed exercise. 🥩
.
When out on a longer walk, you may need to treat any bumps or scrapes before getting your dog to a vet.
A good first aid kit will include:
Bandages
Tweezers
Sterile Gauze
Blunt-Ended Scissors
Surgical Sticky Tape
Antiseptic Spray
.
We all know that if our dogs find a river or lake, they’re most likely going to go for a dip! Avoid any cold pups or smelly car rides by being prepared with a drying towel.
.
In the Beyond the Breed office, we are manifesting a hot sunny summer!🌞 However, when the weather gets warmer, it can be deadly. You should never leave your dog in a locked vehicle on a hot day. High temperatures can cause irreparable organ damage and even death.
.

Bea's Assessment
On day one of our workshop weekend, we had thought that Bea the yellow Lab was a Follower as she wasn’t showing us any particular traits of another FC.
.
On day two we settled on Peacekeeper after asking Bea's guardian, Susanne, some more in-depth questions. Beth and Heather both had an inkling that another FC may be behind Bea, and so more questions were needed to get to the bottom of it all.
.
Bea is in the video below, together with Eddie the Yorkshire Terrier who is rocking his coat in Beyond the Breed colours!
We have yet to come to a conclusion about Eddie's Functional Character due to his complicated past and the trauma associated with it.

Henry's Assessment
In this second video Henry is undergoing his Functional Character assessment. As we were suspecting that he may be a Defender, we brought out Ava who is also known as the Defender Testing Kit, and she confirmed our suspicions by her reaction.
Can you spot the moment in this video that Heather gets a fright?!🤣

Margo's Assessment
MARGO'S ASSESSMENT🐶🐾
The below video is from our Sunday 7 April workshop, and as you can see we have Margo meeting KD!
.
It can often be very difficult to assess dogs that have been imported as rescues from foreign countries because if they haven't suffered trauma prior to them coming, the journey can be traumatic for them.
.
Although Margo was quite a complex individual, we question marked Peacekeeper and Defender with trauma.
.
Our gut reaction after viewing this footage several more times is that Margo is a Defender with trauma because she would have deferred more to KD if she was a Peacekeeper.
.
We'll be back soon with content from our latest Wardlow workshop!🤩
