Don’t make a noise, make a difference - Animal Friends of Turkey (AFOT) is a UK registered non-profit charity (number 1182513) run by a small group of volunteers. We rescue dogs with little or no future in Turkey due to neglect, abandonment and/or abuse and rehabilitate them mind, body and soul. Once ready, using DEFRA guidelines, we rehome them with loving UK forever homes where we provide a full lifetime rescue backup - Transforming the lives of animals and humans alike! 🐾 ❤️

Drake was found when only a few months old with his Mum and two siblings in a terrible state on the streets near Istanbul. A local animal volunteer contacted AFOT for help, unfortunately when our volunteers reached them only two pups could be found. Drake’s sister was re-homed in 2021 but Drake has not been lucky in finding his home. Drake is a nervous dog who recently moved foster homes after three years so we could see how he would react to change. Having reacted positively we feel, in the right home with training advice and previous rescue experience with nervous dogs, he would gain his trust and be the dog he was always meant to be. Drake is a lovely calm dog with a kind, lovely temperament, who when he learns to trust will be very loyal. He is extremely dog friendly and absolutely loves his walks. Although very dog friendly we think he would do better as an only dog, however we wouldn’t rule out a calm resident female. He is also good with small children. As he is timid we are looking for an adopter that has past rescue experience and the skills needed to help Drake. www.rehome-a-rescue-dog.co.uk to apply. 🐾

Why does no one want lovely Luna? She’s constantly overlooked which we can’t understand as she’s absolutely beautiful, with a lovely temperament. She’s becoming depressed & dejected in rescue, she’s been there too long and we’re desperate to find her a loving home of her very own. Freddie came to us in a terrible state. He was still a puppy and he had caught Distemper, he was thin and the Distemper tics caused by the virus attacking his central nervous system were weakening his body. He could barely even open his eyes. Within a few days of treatment he had made a remarkable come-back, and went on to make a full recovery! Clearly Freddie had never known affection and kindness and he was very scared. It took him a while to realise that he could trust us, but once he let his guard down, he turned into a sweet, happy, affectionate pup! He is now one of the most excited dogs to greet us in the morning, and he also happily comes up to visitors for a sniff and a pet. He has also learned to walk on the lead and is becoming more and more confident on walks. Freddie loves playing with his kennel mates, especially females and has two girlfriends that he spends almost all his time with. He doesn’t like cats. With patience and care, Freddie has made tremendous strides, and we know he can grow even more once he has a happy, stable home! As Freddie continues to learn and grow, he seeks a family that can provide the love and stability he deserves. To apply for Freddy go to www.rehome-a-rescue-dog.co.uk

What makes Buddy special: Buddy looks like a Golden Retriever on short legs!

Buddy was found on the streets by the side of a busy road by an animal lover. Realising he wasn’t safe, they brought him to us. Unfortunately, Buddy turned out to have Distemper, but he made a full recovery and is now a happy, healthy boy who is ready to find his forever home! Buddy is a sweet dog who is generally very easy-going. With a cheerful disposition, he walks well on the lead, listens well, is confident when out for walks and loves going out to explore! Buddy loves his walks and excitedly trots around sniffing all the new smells. He can sometimes pull on the lead in his excitement. He is very playful and enjoys playing with toys and with other dogs. He is very friendly and loves getting attention and cuddles. He is one of the first dogs to greet us every morning, and excitedly runs up to say hello. He loves having visitors in his kennel and tries to get as many cuddles as he can. Buddy gets along well with the other dogs in his kennel, and spends much of his time playing with them. He likes to play rough, so would prefer confident and active play mates. Buddy would thrive in a stable home with experienced adopters, who can read his body language and make sure that he doesn’t exceed his stress threshold in his excitement to go out and explore the world! Buddy is 1.5 yrs old (June 2024) and small/medium (14kg). To apply go to www.rehome-a-rescue-dog.co.uk 🐾

Our boy has a name!
Our 'name a dog' campaign has come to an end and one of the nominated names has been drawn at random:
The winner is DOUGY , nominated by Laura ❤️
For the first time im his life, Dougy has a name and an identity, rather than just being another anonymous stray...

Welcome to the pack Dougy ❤️

🌟GIVE OUR NEWEST RESCUE A NAME🌟

This poor boy came out of the local government shelter all skin and bones.. He was lying in the corner of his kennel, still and completely lifeless, when we spotted him. The shelter workers had to check he was still breathing before they gave him to us.

He has never had a home or a family before, and he has never had a name before.. We need your help to transform his life! The first step to becoming a dog who belongs is a name

So happy to formally be able to introduce everyone to... Winnie! ❤️
Our most recent rescue, a tripawd saved from imminent death under the new law in Turkey, now has a name for the first time in her life!
And what a beautiful name it is! Thank you to everyone who donated for her and suggested names..
The only way is up for little Winnie, it is time to show her that she is safe and the world isn't such a scary place after all..
Keep an eye out for our new 'name a dog' campaign for our other latest rescue, which will go live soon!

🐾Happy National Dog Day 🐾

❤️Let’s help make a difference❤️
Today truly is a day for us animal lovers to celebrate & give back to our canine friends. They add so much love & joy to our life’s, & we believe a house truly isn’t a home without a dog ❤️🐾

To give back to them, would you consider sponsoring any of our dogs❓
Here, we have Marcy, Scarlett, Missy, Luna, Bozo, Lilli & Milo, all long termers in our care sadly, ones with little or no sponsors at all. They all are lovely dogs each with their own personalities & quirks 🌟

Each of our dogs need multiple sponsors monthly to buy them food, provide veterinary care & pay their foster care in Turkey. As a charity run solely on donations, without sponsors or donations we struggle to find the funds to care for each dog until they find a home. You can set up a £5, £10, £20 a month sponsorship to help, with this you will recieve updates on your chosen dog, & you will feel great giving back to such a worthy cause 🫶🏽

These dogs are some of our bigger dogs who have sadly not had any or much interest in our applications, so if you are thinking of getting another dog or could foster one of these dogs 🤞🏽
I promise you they will repay you in so much love & affection. The bigger the dog, the bigger the heart 💖

Please get in touch if you can set up a monthly sponsorship for our big pups or offer any a home 🏡

❤️And for National Dog Day, let’s shower our dogs at home & in Turkey with even more love today!❤️

Please use the dogs name as the reference when setting up any sponsorship 🐾

It's another dark day in Turkey..
In AFOT rescue partner Melez Dog Rescue's city of Aydin, the rounding up for street dogs has begun, and security camera footage has emerged of innocent, friendly, submissive dogs being pulled off the streets.
In Nigde, in central Turkey, where quite a number of our AFOT dogs come from, animal rescuers have found a mass grave of dogs killed by the municipality. Amongst the dead bodies were a tripod mother and her puppies, whom animal lovers had been feeding..
We are still working as hard as we can to get more of our dogs into good homes to free up space to rescue more! Please continue to share our posts to help us find more foster and forever homes!

❤️🐶 MEET OLLIE - READY FOR HIS NEW UK FOREVER HOME

OLLIE – MALE
AGE – 2-3 YEARS (JULY 2024)
MEDIUM SIZED – 24kg

Ollie appeared out of the blue in Ortaca near Dalaman. He’d obviously been abandoned and dumped there as the majority are recognised street dogs so a new one is instantly recognisable, not just by the street dogs but by the locals too.

Both the street dogs and locals were not happy that this new dog was on the scene … the locals were cruel to him and witnesses saw stones been thrown at him trying to chase him away and he was also under attack from the local street dogs – a new dog on the territory did not go down well. After one very ferocious attack an animal lover saw Ollie injured and took him to the vets where they also kindly paid for him to be neutered.

Knowing there was no way Ollie could go back on the streets they asked our sanctuary warden Brenda for help and of course she didn’t hesitate. She took him to the AFOT sanctuary and asked us to help him.
Ollie is a full setter and absolutely striking as well as very intelligent. Understandably he has lost all trust in humans and is very fearful but absolutely adores Brenda and in time will learn to trust again.

Surprisingly, Ollie is dog friendly despite what he has been through and it’s a testament to his character. He’s adjusted well to sanctuary life and he’s now ready to find his forever family in the UK. To adopt go to:
