The new year for me has started with me seeing one of my favourite things the Aurora.

I would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you for all your kind gifts for Christmas and thank you for supporting me this year. Wishing you all the best for 2025.

What does Christmas Day look like in your home? 🎅

In preparation for the big day tomorrow, it's always a good idea to make an ‘on the day’ plan to make your day as safe and stress-free as possible for your pets and the whole family 🎄

Take a look at our pet-friendly Christmas guide: http://pdsa.me/rdKF

[Visual description: A Christmas Day timeline example for a pet-safe Christmas. At 8AM, ensure pets don't swallow anything dangerous when opening presents, i.e. bows, ribbons or string. At 10AM, bored pets can get into trouble. Take them out for walkies or play with them! At 12PM, kitchens can be dangerous. Keep kitchen doors closed so your pet can't get under your feet. At 3PM, if you're taking a nap, ensure dangerous foods like chocolate or Christmas cake are out of reach. At 9PM, if you're giving your pet a treat too, ensure it's pet-safe & they're not overfed.]

Wishing you all a very Happy Christmas and a great new year.

❄️🌨️ Reaching You, 24/7, Whatever the Weather 🌨️❄️

Storm Bert may be sweeping across the North East, bringing challenging weather and roads covered in snow and mud, but rest assured, we are fully equipped to reach you and your beloved pets no matter the conditions.

While we typically prioritise environmental consciousness by using our electric cars, sometimes, extraordinary weather calls for extraordinary measures. Today, we had to bring out "The Beast," ensuring we could safely navigate even the most remote areas to provide the care and support you need.

Your peace of mind and your pet's comfort are always our top priorities, and no storm will stand in our way. Stay safe, everyone! 🙏

Does your pet’s fur protect them from the cold? ❄️

In most cases, yes! But in really wet and cold weather, if your pet isn't able to keep active or get themselves somewhere warm, their fur coat may not be enough. Like us humans, our pets, though thankfully rarely, can develop a dangerous and potentially deadly condition called hypothermia.

Any pet can become seriously ill if the temperature of their body drops too low, and acting quickly and doing the right thing could save your pet’s life.

Here are some key symptoms to look out for during the winter months! And if you suspect your pet may have hypothermia, it’s important to call your vet straight away and follow their advice ⚠️

[Visual description: Infographic about hypothermia in pets. Signs and symptoms include; shivering, drowsiness, confusion, clumsiness, pale gums and loss of consciousness/collapse. What you should do; 1. Call your vet straight away and follow their advice. 2. Get your pet out of the cold. Take them somewhere warm (not hot) and sheltered. 3. If your pet is awake, try to get them to drink some lukewarm (not hot) water. 4. If your pet is wet, use towels to dry them by rubbing them over. Change the towels when they become damp. 5. Be careful not to heat your pet up too quickly, this can be dangerous. Use blankets and towels under and over them to keep them warm. Using hot water bottles and heat pads will heat them too quickly and may cause burns.]

We have had a few cases of mycotoxin poisoning recently. Its not a poisoning that folks are generally familiar with, so we thought we'd share the information to raise awareness.-

Ingestion of mouldy food from the bin or a compost pile puts dogs, cats, horses, livestock, and even wildlife at risk for toxicity due to tremorgenic mycotoxins. These toxins may be found in MOULDY bread, pasta, cheese, nuts, or other decaying matter like compost. Clinical signs include vomiting, agitation, incoordination, tremors, seizures, and elevated body temperature. A specific mycotoxin called aflatoxin can even cause liver failure. Be sure to keep mouldy food and compost out of your pets reach!

If a pup wants to sniff walk for longer than the 5 minutes per month of age then they can. We no longer need to restrict the length of the walk just not subject them to certain movements like stairs and chasing a ball. But gentle walking as long as they aren’t tired is perfect!

Today I am grateful NOT to be working in clinic. No not to enjoy the sunshine, but to be away from the devastation that heatstroke still causes despite multiple warnings. I am grateful not to be battling to save lives, and witnessing unnecessary deaths of wonderful dogs who would have quite happily missed a walk today.

To all my veterinary colleagues, I just hope you do not have to see too many tragedies today. Sending lots of love and healing as it’s part of our job which should no longer be part of our job and has a huge negative mental impact.

KEEP THOSE DOGS IN THE COOL, AT HOME!

We need heat to leave a dog’s body hence why we never cover them with cold wet towels when suffering from heat related illness. But lying on something cold, if it is kept cold can be super useful. Not only for prevention of overheating but also for management. This is why cooling mats can be very affective!

We worry about heatstroke, and rightly so! Temperatures like we are seeing this week are dangerous for many pets.

Fly strike is another potential summer hazard. A dog with diarrhoea, especially if hairy can get a dirty bottom! And that’s how the process begins. Maggots can burrow through skin and make a pet so seriously ill. So check those bottoms and keep them clean!

It’s been reading 24c here where I am today. So it was a walk early morning then another this evening. I don’t have high risk dogs, but still at this temperature it is a risk. I love my dogs dearly so I won’t be putting them at risk.

The old myths about rapeseed being dangerous are doing the rounds again I see!!

It is not the rapeseed causing dangerous toxic signs. However letting your dog run through rapeseed fields is not advisable not just because of the fertiliser/herbicide that could of been sprayed on it (that would cause toxic signs) but because it’s a farmers produce.
