Happy National Cat Day!

National cat day allows us to take a moment to celebrate our feline friends. This year our team have taken the opportunities to show off their babies with you all . On this day we encourage you to share picture and stories about your cats with us!

Other ways National Cat day can be celebrated is by:
1. Looking to give a cat a second chance via adoption from a local and reputable organization.
2. Donating toys, food and bedding to your local rescue centers
3. Share photos and stories of your cats
4. Buy your cat a new version of its favorite toy.
However you chose to celebrate, enjoy every moment of the day with your bundle of joy šŸ¾

Meet Minnie...

Size is no limitation to our cardiology team!
We performed a PDA closure in our smallest patient to date weighing only 900g.

The PDA is a persistent connection between the aorta and pulmonary artery which has not closed after birth. Untreated, it will result in left sided heart failure in many patients. The heart failure signs are usually difficult to control. Further, it can trigger changes in the pulmonary vessels resulting in severe pulmonary hypertension. Both scenarios have a huge impact on the patientsā€™ quality of life and will sadly lead to premature death. Treated early in life will provide many patients with a completely normal life expectancy. Early diagnosis and treatment are therefore very important. Continuous heart murmurs which are typical for patients with a PDA should always prompt cardiac workup.

Minnieā€™s family report she is doing great and now enjoying life as a normal puppy!

This month we hosted our first ā€˜Pet Owner First Aidā€™ event.
This event was designed by our nursing team to help owners with support in responding to first aid alongside seeking veterinary assistance. That reassurance in what to do in those first few moments.

This was our pilot in a new series for owners covering elements such as; whatā€™s normal for your pet, what to look out for, what to have in your home first aid kit, heatstroke, basic bandaging & CPR

We were lucky enough to be joined by an amazing group of owners to make the afternoon a truly positive experience.

Examples of the lovely feedback we received:
ā€˜Very good. Covered a lot of info in a short period. Good/practical info that pet owners need.ā€™
ā€˜I found the bandage practical really useful and fun.ā€™
ā€˜Amazing thing to do for the community of pet lovers thank you.ā€™

Special thanks to our amazing nurses:
Caprice McWilliams - Senior Admit and Discharge Nurse
Katie Foley - Head Surgery Nurse
Maisie Geraghty- Head Anaesthesia Nurse

We look forward to sharing future dates with you.

Seasonal update from our Feline Advocate, Paige:

Over the Halloween period, there are a number of things we may enjoy while celebrating that can actually end up being harmful to our beloved cat.

Candles: While lighting pumpkins looks great for us, our cats may be to interested in the flickering flame resulting in burnt paws or singed whiskers. Use battery powered candles will limit the risk to our pets and children.

Glow sticks: Halloween is fun time to dress up and light our way, however this also makes them very attractive to our furry friends. Due to the soft outer plastic your cat may puncture this and come into contact with the oily substance inside. If this happens, you may notice your cat have sudden excitable behaviour, become aggressive with lots of salvia being produced or have skin irritation.

Decorations: Getting spooky with decorations is something many of us love at this time of year they can oppose a risk to our cats if eaten. When decorating ensure all decorations our out of furry paws reach.

Chocolate: Chocolate contains a component called theobromine which is toxic to cats. If ingested you may see vomiting, diarrhoea and lethargy. Keep all your yummy Halloween snacks out of reach.

If over the spooky period, you have any concerns over these dangers we suggest contacting your local veterinarian.

Today is World Anaesthesia Day!

On this day in 1846, Edward Gilbert Abbott had a tumour removed from his neck while rendered unconscious by ether - the first public demonstration of anaesthesia. This was performed in an amphitheatre at Massachusetts General Hospital, with the room subsequently renamed the ā€œEther Domeā€. We now take anaesthesia for granted, but, up until this point, surgeries were performed with patients held down by observers, while feeling everything that was being done to them.

At SCVS we are very grateful to have our talented Anaesthesia team who keep our patients safe and comfortable while under their care.

Our surgeons have been out presenting too... Well done Juan!

Juan presented at the ESVOT congress (European Society of Veterinary Orthopaedics and Traumatology), in Lisbon (Portugal) last month, on his research involving intraoperative measurement of soft tissue tension in canine hip replacements and also on feline carpal fusions.

Last Saturday we hosted our annual nursing congress.

ā€˜A veterinary nursing congress designed for veterinary nurses by veterinary nursesā€™

We were joined by an amazing group of nurses spanning the local area participating in a full days training.
Throughout the day we covered topics across cardiology, anaesthesia, surgery, internal medicine, suturing, CPR and biochemistry and each delegate received a personal agenda to suit their specific needs.

A big shout out to our team who were amazing, both presenting and coordinating the day ensuring everything ran smoothly.
The feedback we have received has been outstanding and we were delighted to hear we pitched it just right!
We would like to also thank our sponsors Boehringer Ingelheim, VPG and Ethicon for their involvement.ā€™
