A few things to remember if your out enjoying the countryside with your doggies today 🐾🐾

We know that lots of people plan a New Years Day walk to enjoy our beautiful countryside, but have you made sure you’re familiar with the Countryside Code?

This is a set of rules to follow to appreciate your surroundings safely whilst respecting those that visit, live and work in the area.

A key point of the code is responsible dog ownership, especially around livestock.

All dogs, no matter the breed, size or normal temperament, have the instinct to become a predator around animals like sheep, cows and chickens.

Rural Crime Sergeant Chris Wilkinson said: “Sadly, the incidents of livestock worrying that we see in Derbyshire can have terrible consequences for the farmer and dog owner.

“You might not think your dog would harm sheep or other livestock by chasing and attacking the animals, until it happens and by then it’s too late.

“Our team will still be patrolling popular walking areas. We’re asking you to keep your dog on a lead around livestock and be respectful of the fact that you’re walking in people’s homes and workplaces.”

Key points of the Countryside Code are:
🐶 Always keep dogs on a lead around livestock – especially sheep. Remember that farmers are within their rights to take measures (including shooting out of control dogs) to protect their animals.
⬆️ Follow signs and use the official rights of way, make sure you understand the signs and symbols you might come across.
👍 Leave all gates as you find them.
🚫 Never feed horses or other animals you meet on your walk, unless you have the owner’s express permission. Many foods can cause harm to livestock and wildlife.
🚗 Drive carefully, and to the conditions of the road. Do not block access to farmland with your vehicle or park on narrow lanes. Agricultural vehicles and equipment can be wider than the average vehicle, and emergency vehicles need access 24/7.
👀 Be aware of your surroundings - agricultural operations will still be running so look out for machinery or signage and follow instructions.
