Ruby's long distance search and retrieve. Brilliant send away across flooded stepping stones, she searches for ball, then carries it back across those pesky steps. My collie watching from the bank. One of our superdogs, trained by John .

Excellent article by Eileen, featured on theglasgowdogtrainers website.

Dogs learn to jump. When they are puppies, people jump all over them, the pups jump up for a variety of reasons and are then touched, spoken to, looked at and otherwise interacted with for jumping. In other words, the jumping behaviours are then reinforced. Pup then gets bigger and jumping behaviours are not not as cute as they were before. The adolescent dog jumps up and the dog is now shouted at, corrected on the collar, pulled back etc. Not fair on the dog.
How to deal with it -
1. Teach 4 on the floor behaviours. These have to be actively taught by taking time out of our schedule to train them. The protocols need to be practiced EVERY TIME our dog is in a position where they'd previously jumped up
(If you don't already have a copy of the counting game lesson from me, comment and I'll send you it, it will solve this problem)
2. Keep your dog on a lead/leash and stand out if range of the person they are going to jump on. This is often further away than we would stand from someone socially. Ask the person to stand back and stand back on them.
We often worry more about upsetting a stranger/acquaintance than teaching our dog not to jump. The dog is yours, not theirs.
3. This is a difficult one - stop petting other people's puppies, and young dogs. Ask yourself who is getting benefit from you petting the dog - you, the dog or the dog's human. Be honest. If the benefit is heavily weighted towards you, please stop. You are training that puppy to jump on the next person and making life harder for dog and their human. Stand out of range and ask the human about their dog. They are proud of their dog, often enjoy the social interaction and we can do so without touching the dog.
4. Great your own dog down on their level. Use your hands to block jumping and say hello with 4 on the floor. This is a significantly more effective and fairer way to reach this than turning your back on the dog. Imagine being ignored when you came home by your family. It's brutal and outdated.
5. Teach your dog that hands on them is a cue for 4 on the floor, not jumping.
6. As Eileen says in the article, if your dog jumps on guests, have them on a lead when guests arrive and train 4 on the floor.
7. Do not ask for a sit after the dog jumps. They just learn jumping and sitting after the game.
4 feet on the ground does not have to mean sit. We are ridiculously obsessed with making our dogs sit, it's insidiously ingrained in dog culture. Your dog is finding 4 on the floor hard enough as it is, please don't make it harder.
More content on this to come.
