Tarnedge Labradors Here at Tarnedge we focus on breeding healthy, good-natured, athletic dogs suitable as working dogs, Welcome to Tarnedge Labradors.

I have been training, working and breeding Labradors for over 40 years. I have been a Kennel Club Assured Breeder ever since the scheme first began in 2004 and I now have current, UKAS accredited approval. I am also a member of the Three Ridings Labrador Club, the Northumberland and Durham Labrador Retriever Club, the Golden Retriever Club of Northumbria and the Yorkshire Retriever Field Trial Soc

iety. All our dogs and bi***es are bred from Field Trial Champion and Winning stock and mostly go back to my foundation bitch who was by Field Trial Champion Pocklington Glen out of a bitch by Field Trial Champion Drakeshead Tinker. We are now testing all our dogs which we plan to breed from for PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy - which causes blindness); CNM (Centronuclear Myopathy - which causes muscle wastage and in the worst case scenario, for the dog to have to be put to sleep); EIC (Exercise Induced Collapse - which causes the dog to collapse after exercise) and SD2 (Skeletal Dysplasia 2 which causes dwarfism - the dog's legs simply stop growing). We also have our dogs X-rayed for Hip and Elbow dysplasia and we have their eyes tested every year. We only breed from dogs with low hip and elbow scores and with clear eye tests and we now have had six dogs with perfect (0/0) hip-scores. We have 16 working Labs at present ranging from Katie, who is ten, down to this year's youngsters: Tarnedge Jaina and Tarnedge Peregrine who are both black-carrying-chocolate bitch pups, by Levenghyl Sky Walker and FT Champion Waterford Harris of Featherfly; and little Tarnedge Swordsman - a chocolate dog puppy whose sire is by FTCh Brackenbird Minnow and whose dam is by FTCh Pocklea Adder. We have great hopes for this little chap that he might take over as our next chocolate stud dog - but he will have to pass his health tests and jump through a lot of hoops before that happens!

As the Working Test season for me comes to a close when the Grouse Season starts, it's nice to look back at the successes my little dogs have achieved this year.

I have been lucky enough to have five dogs win this season - My old mate Flynn; his son, Storm; his daughter, Beanie; his grandson, Rebel and his granddaughter, Darcey.

How lucky am I to have such a wonderful family of dogs - so honest, willing and talented? And such gentle and kind companions as well. 🥰🥰

Feeling very privileged and incredibly proud.

He did it!
Rebel (Tarnedge Run Riot) after winning his first Working Test yesterday.
Over some fairly challenging tests with only six out of fourteen puppies managing to complete all the tests, he scored 77 out of 80 and I was over the moon with him.
In the other tests he has entered, his immaturity has led him to be distracted by everything that was going on around him, but yesterday, he was totally focused and he did me proud.
Good boy Rebel - Rebel by name but definitely not by nature... 🥰🥰

Flynn’s eighth birthday today and he’s a veteran already…
How can that be? 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️
But we have so many wonderful memories together and I owe him so much! Not just for all the times he has done me proud, but for the many amazing and wonderful sons, daughters and grandchildren he has produced.

Hands up if you have had a Flynn puppy! And photos please!

Happiest of birthdays to my best ever boy, now and forever. ❤️❤️

Sibling rivalry…
Beanie, (Tarnedge Trial Run) hard on the heels of her big brother, Tarnedge Storm in a Tea Cup!
Storm won the cup, but Beanie came a very creditable fourth, only four marks behind him in this, her second Open Working Test. With a bit more experience, I think she’ll soon be really on his tail…
Following in their dad, FTCh Tarnedge Flynn’s fabulous footsteps! ❤️❤️

Joey (Cardueae Dianthus of Tarnedge) looking very proud of the third he won in The Vale of York Novice Working Test on Sunday!
The scenting conditions were just awful with only nine of the 27 runners managing to complete all the tests, so I was very proud of him too. And he was only two marks behind the winning dog!
Good boy Joey!

What a week for Tarnedge!

Yesterday, at the Tyne Tees and Tweed Working Test, Tarnedge Trial Run (Beanie) pulled out all the stops and won the Novice Working Test, with her litter sister, Tarnedge Run a Mile coming fourth.
Their sire, FTCh Tarnedge Flynn was fourth in the Open Test on the same day and their half-brother, Tarnedge Storm in a Teacup was second.

And last week, Beanie's son, Tarnedge Run Riot, following in his mother's footsteps, got his first award in a Working Test, while Beanie and her sister, Gertie (Tarnedge Run a MIle) also both got Certificates of Merit.

So very pleased with my little Beanie!

After two full seasons sweeping (i.e. running about like a wild thing picking-up! 😂😂), I was so impressed with her ability and her attitude, that when the season ended in February I decided to see if I could train her for a new career…

I like a challenge… 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Anyway, after a short course in outruns, stopping and handling, she managed a sixth in a Novice Working Test a couple of weeks ago at Studley - (being one of only seven dogs out of thirty to complete the test)!

And then yesterday, on tough ground at Rosedale, where out of 35 runners only five dogs completed, she came fourth!

She’s got a long way to go in terms of tidiness, but she’s honest and she’s willing, so here’s hoping that by the time the trialling season starts, she’s reliable enough to have a go at Novice Trials! 🤞🏻🤞🏻

Beanie is a daughter of Flynn and she is also the mother of Rebel. (Tarnedge Run Riot), so that’s another thing I owe her for! 🥰🥰 ❤️❤️

Anyway, the point of this post is don’t worry if your twelve month old pup can’t jump through hoops - they all progress at different rates and as they say, “Many a good tune is played on an old fiddle”…

Just Storm. 🥰🥰

Darcey and Rebel say "Happy Easter" to everyone.

They are feeling very pleased with themselves as they have just had their first lesson retrieving dummies out of the River Ure at Masham with a strong current to contend with.

Both youngsters made nothing of it - although they did find it quite hard to be patient and wait while their kennel-mates had their turns, and they also found the numerous walkers and pet dogs something of a distraction - especially the folk who chose to stand and admire them, and the little dogs who wanted to join in the fun!

Darcey is also celebrating because she loves little puppies -choosing to jump in with Lunar's pups and try to feed them even though she's not much more than a pup herself - and today she heard that her hip and elbow scores are back and she has scored 0 on her elbows and just 5/3 on her hips so that she will be able to have some puppies of her own one day when she is quite a bit older and more grown up.

Darcey (Tarnedge Fair Isle) is by the 2022 Retriever Championship winner, FTCh Turpingreen Bohol, out of my grandson's fabulous little working bitch Tarnedge Little Tiger who is by FTCh Tarnedge Flynn.

Rebel (Tarnedge Run Riot) also has hips of 5/3 and 0 elbows - His sire is a very nice working dog by FTCh Shallowbeck Baker Boy and his dam is the wonderful Beanie who is by FTCh Tarnedge Flynn out of a top class working bitch by OFTAW Salemasky Ebor of Brackenfarg.

Feeling very lucky and very proud to have these two youngsters in my team! 🥰🥰

He has a kind temperament and is good with children and other dogs.
He comes from a long line of top class picking-up, Field Trialling and Working Test dogs. He is now in training to continue that line. He is obedient, soft-mouthed and quiet whilst working.

Rebel is extensively health-tested.
Hip score 3/5
Elbow score 0/0
Eye Test Clear 3rd February 2024
PRA Clear
CNM Clear
EIC Clear
SD2 Clear
HNPK Clear

He is now available at stud to approved, health-tested bi***es.

At Stud:
FTCh Tarnedge Flynn.

By FTCh Copperbirch Paddy of Leadburn out of a top class home-bred working bitch by FTCh Waterford Harris of Featherfly.

We believe Flynn to be the only Field Trial Champion to carry the chocolate gene. He is honest, loyal and hard-working. He picks-up over seventy days a year, has numerous wins and awards in Field Trials and competes very successfully in Working Tests, including winning the challenging Open Test at Eggleston Fell and coming third in the team events at Windsor and at Chatsworth last year.. More importantly, he is also my best friend.

Flynn is clear of PRA, CNM, EIC, SD2, HNPK, STGD and MCD. He has 4/5 hips, 0/0 elbows and a current clear eye certificate.
He is a very experienced stud dog and is particularly good with difficult bi***es.

PM me for more details.

Pleased to report we are expecting puppies early in the new year from Cardueae Dianthus of Tarnedge (Joey) and Tarnedge Bourbon (Whisky).
Joey is by FTCh Mistigri Finn of Featherfly out of a really good picking-up bitch by FTCh Beileys Aguzannis of Fendawood.
Whisky is by our own FTCh Tarnedge Flynn out of a lovely working chocolate bitch.

This will be Whisky’s second litter with both black and chocolate puppies. (Mum is chocolate and dad carries the chocolate gene.)
Both parents have fabulous temperaments and have been successful in Working Tests as well as being top class picking-up dogs. They are hip and elbow scored, have current clear eye certificates and have excellent DNA statuses.
Please PM me for further details or email [email protected] .

FINALLY!!!
Nearly a year after Flynn won his second Two Day Stake and became a Field Trial Champion, his certification has finally arrived from the Kennel Club.

To say I am massively proud of him would be the understatement of my life. He is my friend, my workmate and the most honest, generous and loyal dog I have ever been privileged to own.

Being able to say that I bred him and that he goes back to my foundation bitch, Jay of Oakmeadow who was whelped in 1985, by FTCh Pocklington Glen out of a bitch by FTCh Drakeshead Tinker, is the icing on the cake.

How very, very lucky am I?

A Facebook memory from eight years ago… before Flynn was even born.

I had no idea what fate had in store for me then or how one small puppy would soon change my life. I never imagined it could be even remotely possible that one day I would be competing at the Championship instead of just watching it.

Hold onto tight your dreams folks - one day they may just become reality…. 🥰🥰
