Meet Freddie 👋

Freddie came to us after ingesting some broken glass!

Little Freddie is a hand rear so has a ferocious appetite and is a huge character to boot 🙈

Whilst visiting family, he managed to knock his substitute food bowl onto the floor and ate some of the very sharp pieces 🙈

After quick thinking, his owners contacted the OOH team where Freddie was admitted for an X-ray of his abdomen.

Freddie had emergency surgery that night to remove the glass and prevent any accidental lacerations to the rest of his bowel! During surgery we also found a surprise bit of string!

Freddie had a few days in hospital where he enjoyed all of the attention from the nursing team. 🥰🥰

Freddie is now at home and recovering well. His appetite is not affected and he is under instruction of strict rest no jumping - an instruction he is not enjoying as a super playful kitten!

Here is the gorgeous Freddie at home modelling his pet medical shirt ❤️‍🩹

We will continue to support Freddie and his owners over his recovery period at home, get well soon Freddie! ❤️‍🩹

📣We are recruiting! 📣

We’re looking for an experienced small animal vet to join our team.

The ideal candidate will have strong imaging skills, with a view to leading our busy internal and expanding external medical referral services, making this an exciting opportunity for ambitious vets.

Our team contains a wealth of experience, with 16 FTE vets, including advanced practitioners in medicine, surgery and general practice. We’re well-equipped, including a recently upgraded ultrasound scanner, video endoscopy and access to a visiting CT service.

Everything we do is underpinned by our CARES values: clinical excellence, adaptability, respect, education and sustainability. We are passionate about providing the very best service for our clients and patients, and being independent allows us to invest in our team and facilities in order to ensure we can do so.

It also means we can provide a personal touch, with a focus on continuity of care enabled by our fantastic retention of team members, with many vets, nurses and support team members practising with us for decades.

We’d love for the right candidate to follow this example and become another familiar and valuable member of our North Yorkshire community.

If this sounds like the right fit for you, get in touch for an informal chat with Ian McClive or send your CV to [email protected]

We are thrilled to announce that Senior Vet Laura has been made a Small Animal Sector Partner joining Ian McClive & Rachael Baker as partners in the practice. 🎉

Laura qualified from Nottingham University in 2014 and has dedicated her career to advancing her expertise in small animal care. She achieved her Certificate in Small Animal Surgery in 2017 and was awarded Advanced Practitioner status in July 2021.

Since joining Bishopton in July 2021, Laura has made a significant impact, becoming Senior Vet in Autumn 2022. Her main professional interests include:
🐾 Canine cruciate disease
🐾 Fracture repairs
🐾 Wound management and skin reconstruction

As the proud owner of a spirited (some may say troublesome!) spaniel with complex orthopaedic needs, Laura is also passionate about managing canine arthritis. She is dedicated to making these dogs as comfortable as possible and fully understands the challenges of extended rest periods – offering both empathy and expert guidance to owners in similar situations. she can sympathise (and help) with the extended periods of rest that she may ask of you and your pet!

Outside of work, Laura enjoys running, walking, and combining her love of travel with adventure. From climbing Annapurna Base Camp, the Canadian Rockies, and the Atlas Mountains to cycling 300 miles in Cuba, she’s no stranger to a challenge.

Congratulations Laura on this well-deserved milestone! 👏👏👏

⚠️ ANTIFREEZE ️⚠️Every year many cats (and some dogs) die because they have been poisoned by ethylene glycol - the main ingredient in most anti-freezes. Drinking just a tiny amount (or grooming it off fur or paws) can cause serious kidney damage and suffering and often kills.
How to protect your pet...
⚠️ Avoid using antifreeze where possible.
⚠️ Choose products that use an alternative to ethylene glycol if possible.
⚠️ Never put antifreeze in water which is accessible to cats.
⚠️ Store safely away from animals and children
⚠️ Clean up any spillages thoroughly and immediately
Signs of antifreeze poisoning include vomiting, a sleepy or depressed demeanor, an uncoordinated state, as well as seizures and difficulty breathing. Signs can show after 30 minutes with kidney failure indicators showing after two to three days.
If you think your cat has ingested antifreeze call us immediately.

🐈Feral/Farm cats in the snow🐈

Due to our location we have a number of local farm cats or feral colonies. These cats are often used by farms to keep rodent populations low or have been from unwanted matings from unneutered cats.

We work very hard with Cats Protection and local groups to trap, neuter, release and maintain health within the population but here are some tips to help them through this cold spell. ❄️

🐈 Provide a waterproof shelter such as a shed or dog kennel.
🐈 Provide ample bedding such as straw or hay to ensure warmth (both straw and hay are suitable, although straw is better in the winter months due to it's moisture repellant nature).
🐈 Ensure fresh water/ensure water is not frozen.
🐈 Increase their food intake.

Should you notice a cat is injured or unwell, please give us a call and we can help you trap it

*please note we do not encourage the feeding of other pet cats as this can be harmful to a pets health. The advice above is for known feral/farm cats only*

❄️Cold weather tips for arthritic pets ❄️

During a wintery cold spell, our golden oldies can really struggle with a big drop in temperature. This can be due to arthritic joints and a lower body fat percentage.

Here are some cheats to keep your older pets comfortable in the cold:-
🥶 Try to avoid ice and slippy surfaces, boots may help to aid grip and reduce muscle pain from slipping.
🥶 Using coats and jumpers for extra warmth, even overnight as the house temperature cools.
🥶 Avoid cold rivers for swimming as the cold can really impact muscles and scrabbling up the bank can flare painful joints.
🥶 Stiffness is usually the first sign of osteoarthritis so come and call us to start a pain relief trial to see if pain is impacting your pets day to day.
🥶 Using heat packs (wheat bags and hot water bottles in a cover) can really help reduce sore muscles and joints.
🥶 Ensuring their coats are dry once wet, to reduce stiffness and cold. This can be done carefully with a hair dryer - avoiding their eyes (as it can cause them to dry and ulcerate).
🥶 Physio appointments can help reduce muscle twinges and help maintain and build muscle mass to support painful joints.
🥶 Laser therapy can provide pain relief.

Senior health checks are available by our fabulous nursing team to maximise the support we are giving to our older pets 🥰❤️‍🩹

If you feel your pet has been affected by the cold and want to talk about any of the mentioned topics, please do not hesitate to speak to one of our team. 📞

❤️Oscar update❤️

Can all of you remember Oscar the springer spaniel with the sore front leg?

This is the images we got from his CT scans 🦴

He is showing signs of elbow dysplasia called fragmented coronoid process (FCP) usually seen in labradors! This diagnosis allows us to manage Oscar going forwards and reduce any arthritic flares he may have.

With FCP a piece of fragment has broken of his elbow and acts as a “joint mouse” 🐁 this causes ongoing inflammation as he walks and runs ultimately causing arthritis.

Medical management is going to be the main stay in managing Oscar and is important in all arthritis cases.

Medical management includes:
‼️Weight management to reduce pressure on his joints. This will include a lower calorie diet and huge support from our wonderful nursing team.
‼️Exercise modification - ramps to get in and out of the car, reduction in jumping and no ball throwing 🥎
‼️Hydrotherapy
‼️Anti inflammatory medication when he experiences pain and flare ups.

Surgical management can include:
‼️Arthroscopy to remove the fragment
‼️Intra articular steroids to reduce inflammation
‼️Regenerative therapy such as platelet rich plasma and stem cells to help improve cartilage health.

A very useful guide in managing these cases at home can be found here
https://www.cameducation.co.uk/

For any questions on management of arthritis or regenerative medicine, please do contact a member of the veterinary team 📞

Ever wondered what happens when your dog has a CT scan?

Meet Oscar, a lovely 4-year old springer spaniel who came to us after experiencing sudden lameness. Given the known elbow issues in this breed, we focused our investigation there. 🔍

Oscar arrived bright and early at 9am (no breakfast for him that morning!). After sedation, Oscar was gently transported to the CT truck where he was positioned for imaging of his elbows, shoulders and spine. 🦴

Once the scan was complete, Oscar returned on a stretcher to recover—and finally enjoyed his much-anticipated breakfast. 🥰

His images are now on their way to a European specialist for review, with results expected in 24-48 hours. Stay tuned for updates on Oscar’s journey! 💓

We often have a tendency to over cater with food at this time of year and this can lead to food going mouldy. But did you know mould ingestion can be lethal ⚠️ to pets?
It usually happens when dogs raid the kitchen waste recycling caddy, so keep them out of reach this Christmas period where there is likely to be an increase in food waste. If your pet ingests mouldy food seek treatment without delay.
Symptoms can occur rapidly and include:
RESTLESSNESS, PANTING, EXCESSIVE SALIVATION, WHOLE-BODY MUSCLE TREMORS, HYPERSENSITIVITY TO TOUCH/NOISE, SEIZURES
