๐Ÿ“ข Meet the speakers... Prof Jonathan Statham RAFT Solutions Ltd will give details of the sexed male Stabiliser semen project at January's conference. Sexed male semen can significantly increase annual herd suckler beef yields and income by positively moving from 50:50 towards 80:20 bull calves and consequently reducing emissions intensity.

Jonathan Statham is Chief Executive at RAFT Solutions and Professor of Sustainable Livestock Health & Welfare at Harper and Keele Veterinary School, chairing the InSHAW research group there. He is a practicing independent farm veterinary surgeon, graduating from Cambridge University in 1996 and is a partner and chair of Bishopton Veterinary Group. ๐Ÿคฉ EXCITING PROJECT UPDATE! ๐Ÿคฉ

We have been working closely with the team at Morrisons, one of their Blueprint Beef farmers, Tim Phipps, and the Map Of Ag in our latest project looking at how sexed semen could be transformative in terms of genetic progress and by enhancing sustainable reproductive success in the first phase of the breeding season.

Supported by Innovate UK, this project has developed several innovative ideas that are now helping the Phipps family ensure the beef they supply to Morrisons has a low carbon footprint as possible.

๐Ÿšœ As part of the herd sustainability strategy, bulls with strong maternal traits have been used to breed cows that would suit the system. Bulls with strong growth traits were then selected as sexed male AI semen to put on the replacement females to produce efficient finishing stock for the trial. By using sexed male semen in this study, the aim was to move the ratio of calves from 50:50 male: female towards majority 80:20 bull calves and consequently extra beef yield.

๐Ÿšœ The programme produced additional bull calves which modelling predicted would produce an additional three tonnes of beef per 100 cows/year.

๐Ÿšœ Sustainable breeding improvements lead to decreased days to slaughter, reduced waste, and increased resource efficiency.

๐Ÿšœ Sexed semen offers a key tool to target maternal genetics in the animals bred as replacements and ultimately terminal beef traits in animals less suitable for breeding replacements, producing more efficient and lower emissions beef.

Itโ€™s been a great project to be involved in and a big thank you to everyone involved!
