PAWS We are now left with a piece of land that we cannot use for rescuing cats and dogs. www.pennineanimalwelfaresociety.org

UPDATE 23rd August 2024
Further to our last update we are very disappointed to report that our planning applications and consultation with Oldham Council has not yielded the planning approval we hoped for. Consequently, we will be selling the land and are on the look out for another place to call home. If you know of anywhere suitable, a rural/semi-rural location with a few acres and a building f

ootprint of some sort, please get in touch with us. We have been looking at barns, commercial buildings and other potential sites which are not in greenbelt but have the potential for conversion to a kennel/cattery and somewhere to put a static home so our animal caregiver can live on site. We will be starting up a new campaign to raise the money we need for this project as it is likely to cost us considerably more than we paid for the land. We will consider rental as well as purchase but if you wish to give towards our future please go to: https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/SavePAWS. We have now moved to our new site near Delph, however, we are not fully operational on the site yet as there is a lot to do. We will be serving various communities across the Delph, Oldham, Rochdale, Todmorden, Halifax, Calder Valley and Burnley areas. Our planning application has been rejected but we are in the process of re-submitting it with new reports and advice to Oldham Council. We are being very well supported by the Parish of Saddleworth and the local community. We have jobs to do so if you are interested in helping with rubbish removal, making good on the stable building, and other general DIY jobs then do get in touch. We still have dogs in foster so they require veterinary care but at present we cannot take any animals into our care as the animal housing has to be built out and the stables converted. We are still looking for foster carers though as there may be animals we can help in this way until we can complete the build out. Funding for the building will be via a grant application but we still need to raise a good proportion of the money ourselves, so if you fancy holding your own event to help us then get in touch. We will also be holding events so keep an eye out on the events listed on our page. If you are interested in becoming a fosterer, volunteer or fundraiser please contact

Our honoured guests today were on the left Skye and the one with the cheeky face is Max! We also had a very special guest, Claire Priestley, who popped in with our 'Pride in Todmorden' nomination certificate. We are all delighted to have been nominated. We hope you enjoyed the morning and that you will come and see us next month. If anyone would like to volunteer with PAWS, pease follow the link to our website for details.

With children spending more time at home with their four-legged friends during half term, it's important to be able to recognise the signs of stress in dogs 🚦

Kendal Shepherd's Canine Ladder of Communication is a useful guide, showing the different signals dogs show through their body language to communicate. As a dog gets more upset, their body language may change according to the steps on the ladder ⚠️

The quicker you notice the early signs of stress, the sooner you'll be able to remove your dog from the situation that is causing them stress and avoid them reaching the top of the ladder.

It’s important to note that context is KEY! Think about the situation that your dog is in to try and understand the signs. For example, if they're at home and relaxed as normal, an exposed belly is very different to a stiffened exposed belly in an unfamiliar environment. All dogs are different - not every dog will show every action on the ladder and they might not follow the same order.

[Visual description: Infographic showcasing signs of stress in dogs. The image features a ladder with a traffic light system of paw prints coloured green, yellow, orange and red. Red is at the top of the ladder and green is at the bottom. Next to the ladder is a list of actions a dog might present, starting with green (deemed as calm) and eventually reaching red (signalling stress).]

Bella went off to her new foster home today and is being ably guided by Shadow, who was recently adopted from PAWS by Steve and Mandy.
Bella is a young girl who needs lots of training and consistency. She is nervous, but as you can see is having lots of fun already.

Ozzy, Poppy and Popcorn are waiting for a special person who will take them and give them a home together. They are very loving as they were hand reared by our Cat specialist and they have so much to give. Here they are pictured in their foster home in the Catio. Please follow the links for more info. The adoption fee may be reduced at the Trustees discretion, for anyone who would like to offer all three cats a home together.

News from PAWS HQ, from Skye's long term foster Cath.
She is starting to show her age,
(she is 11years 8 months)
and slowing down a bit. Enjoys pottering around the garden and a walk around the block. Mostly she likes to snuggle up at home!🐾❤️

Max says hi to everyone. He's had a bit of an upset tummy but following several visits to the vets and changing his food to a veterinary grade one, he's back to normal. His diet is working wonders too and he's enjoying going for much longer walks with his foster carer Elaine.
