Become a 𝗗𝗼𝗴 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗿 they said, it’ll be 𝗙𝗨𝗡 they said………….

And most of the time, it is fun, but, once in a while it bites you in the 💩

𝗣𝗶𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗲 🍿 I’ve got a Westie (regular client) on the table, he’s got fur which is textured like cotton wool, so always needs a good brush through to remove loads of fur before bathing and blocking up the plug hole, not always easy, as sometimes he’s quite matted.

But, today it was different, started really well, let me brush most of him, (hates his legs being touched) awkward when trying to cut nails. Pop him in the bath, quite chilled out, towel dry then blow dry, still doing well………..

Bearing in mind I’ve already brushed his back, I always brush again to remove any knots before attempting to use my trimmers and clippers.

I have to say at this point, it’s really hot and I’m sweating, and his fur is sticking to me, in every crevice you can imagine 😳

As I start to brush along his back, he turns his head as quick as a flash, and bites my finger, (no warning sign) 🩸 running down my hand, I lift him off the table, open the door to the garden to have a break.

Into the kitchen I walk 🩸 dripping every step I take, grab some kitchen towel and apply pressure, whilst rummaging through my medicine box to find steri strips, savlon and a plaster.

At this point my son comes in the kitchen,
“urghhh mum your bleeding” (no s**t sherlock)!
“Can you help me please babe”,
“Sure, what do you want?”

I explain what to do, watching him try and cut the steri strips 😳 and then the plaster……. WELL what can I say. While he’s trying to patch my finger up, blood starts dripping on his hand, “urghh mum it’s gone all over me!” And he starts gagging 🤷‍♀️

I patch myself up as best I can, go back to my grooming room, open the back door, in he walks, lift him on the table and attempt to clipper him, well this is fun, cos now he’s trying to bite the clippers!

I eventually get him finished (not my best groom) but 𝗜𝗧 𝗜𝗦 𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗜𝗧 𝗜𝗦! 😳

Imagine going to the hairdressers and trying to bite them each time they snip your hair, constantly moving as they attempt to cut, then laying down as they try to get the back of your head!

Welcome to a Groomers Life 🤣

JUST A REMINDER, TO ALL DOG OWNERS.

⚠️🚙⚠️ Despite the warnings, hundreds of dogs in the UK die every year after being left in a hot car. Someone you know may need to read this very important message. ⚠️🚙⚠️

SIX MINUTES is all it takes for a dog to overheat in a hot car.

Your dog could suffer serious injury or die in a matter of minutes if left alone in a car.

• The temperature inside a closed vehicle left in the sun can double within 12 minutes.

• At least 75% of the temperature increase in a closed vehicle occurs within 5 minutes of closing the vehicle, and at least 89% of the temperature increase occurs within 15 minutes of closing the vehicle.

• Temperatures exceeding 104˚ F can lead to death or serious injury for the occupants.

• Temperatures in a closed vehicle sitting in the hot sun can reach 160˚F and above. An animal will suffer immeasurably and may die before the temperature reaches 150˚F.

• Even when parked in the shade, the vehicle temperatures can exceed 104˚C.

• Leaving windows down more than 2 inches on an unattended vehicle will not prevent a car from reaching extreme temperatures.

• Even if the animal is revived, they can die due to severe internal organ damage.

Your dog trusts you to have their best interest at heart ALWAYS.
Please don’t risk their safety.

If you are not taking your dog inside your destination with you, PLEASE leave them at home where they are comfortable and safe.

PLEASE leave me at home. It's not nice for me to run next to you.

But because I am a loyal dog, I often go beyond my limits. And so I run beside you, stand still if I must. And feel my paws burn.

I look at you for a moment, but you don't understand.

In 5 minutes, we will be at the cool puddle, right? But those 5 little minutes can now just be fatal for me. I sweat through my Tongue and feet and this heat I just can't reach it the puddle in time
I cook from the inside, but I keep going.....

And so I end up on the asphalt. In the heat and in the sun. With my tongue out of my mouth and my eyes blinking in the sun.

My feet burned my tongue dry and my head pounding from the heat that my body can't get rid of the heat.

Don't brand the paw print!

Let your dog enjoy the sun, at home with a large bowl of water, a place in the shade. And best of all, preferably a cool patch of grass.

𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀? 👇

I hope that this is helpful. It's from one of the experts on the Working Cocker (UK) FB page:

Not all greetings between dogs are equal. Natural greetings between dogs that aren’t known to each other, shouldn’t last more than a few seconds of sniffing to establish the facts about each other. Males tend to head straight for under the tail to sniff, whilst females tend to head for the face first.

If you’ve heard of the 3 second greeting rule then I’d say that’s about right. After this dogs should naturally move on. It’s worth noting that 80% of greetings are not followed by any other interactions and only 10% of greetings result in play. So if your dog is racing about and rushing over to play with every dog in sight, he’s going to be met with 9 dogs out of 10 not wanting the same.

Food for thought.

How a dog approaches is also very significant. This will depend on:

The speed of the approach
The direct line of the approach
The intensity of the eye contact
The size of the dog

Many people say their dogs don’t like German Shepherds and this is exactly why. They are very large, come towards your dog very swiftly, in a straight line, with an intense stare. They often make a beeline for smaller dogs. It takes a lot of confidence for even a well socialised small dog to be able to cope with that kind of greeting. Sadly owners of such dogs don’t appear to realise or care about the effect their dog’s approach could have on many dogs, so it’s up to us to manage these situations on behalf of our dogs.

Dogs that approach slowly, come in from a wider angle, and avert their eyes as they come in are generally going to be far less intense. Some will come over and lie on their backs to diffuse any tension. Again these greetings will go generally go well.

Another greeting that’s unlikely to go well is the dog that sits down, lies in wait for the dog to approach and then pounces on him at the last second. Even if you think it’s playful it’s not something to be encouraged!

One thing I see owners doing on greetings which puts a lot of pressure on the situation, is standing still for every greeting. This prolongs the greeting unnecessarily. Even worse is standing still and putting your dog on the lead. Your dog is then trapped and may be forced to react if uncomfortable. This is where reactivity starts.

Most reactive dogs have a background history of large social settings where unnatural interaction has been forced in some way. Puppy socials, doggy daycare, daily park walks to play with other dogs are a recipe for disaster with confident dogs never learning to read body language and always having expectations of play after a greeting, and unconfident dogs learning that they can’t avoid unwanted interactions so have to resort to snapping and growling, even aggression to keep dogs away.

Dogs that are regularly walked in the countryside where greetings are naturally swift are far less prone to reactivity.

On a final note, people often say that their entire dogs are picked on by neutered males. This is less common now than it was with the increase of entire males, but it is due to a lack of socialising on behalf of the neutered males who are unable to cope with the perceived threat of an entire male, and the scent that they give off. It’s also worth noting that testosterone levels of an adolescent male are 5/6 times higher than if an adult so if you’re seeing this with your 10 month boy all of a sudden ….. that’s why.

So to summarise - manage greetings between strange dogs quite carefully for the first year or two of their lives. If something looks as if it might not go well swiftly and nonchalantly walk the other way without drawing attention to the situation. Keep greetings as tension free and as calm as you can and be the one to diffuse any tension yourself so that your dog doesn’t have to! As an adult your dog will then be equipped to handle most situations confidently.

Everyone who is thinking of getting dogs should read this because you need to understand this reality:

***I am a 21st century dog***
- I'm a Malinois
Overskilled among dogs, I excel in all disciplines and I'm always ready to work: I NEED to work.
But nowadays I get asked to chill on the couch all day everyday.

- I am an Akita Inu
My ancestors were selected for fighting bears.
Today I get asked to be tolerant and I get scolded for my reactivity when another approaches me.

- I am a Beagle
When I chase my prey, I raise my voice so the hunters could follow.
Today they put an electric collar on me to shut up, and you make me come back to you - no running - with a snap of your fingers.

- I am a Yorkshire Terrier
I was a terrifying rat hunter in English mines.
Today they think I can't use my legs and they always hold me in their arms.

- I'm a Labrador Retriever
My vision of happiness is a dive into a pond to bring back the duck he shot to my master.
Today you forget I'm a walking, running, swimming dog; as a result I'm fat, made to stay indoors, and to babysit.

- I am a Jack Russell
I can take on a fox, a mean badger, and a rat bigger than me in his den.
Today I get scolded for my character and high energy, and forced to turn into a quiet living room dog.

- I am a Siberian Husky
Experienced the great, wide open spaces of Northern Europe, where I could drag sleds for long distances at impressive speeds.
Today I only have the walls of the house or small garden as a horizon, and the holes I dig in the ground just to release energy and frustration, trying to stay sane.

- I am a Border Collie
I was made to work hours a day in partnership with my master, and I am an unmistakable artist of working with the herd.
Today they are mad at me because, for lack of sheep, I try to chase bikes, cars, children in the house and everything in motion.

I am ...
I am a 21st century dog.
I'm pretty, I'm alert, I'm obedient, I stay in a bag... but I'm also an individual who, from centuries of training, needs to express my instincts, and I am *not* suited for the sedentary life you'd want me to lead.

Spending eight hours a day alone in the house or in the garden - with no work and no one to play or run with, seeing you for a short time in the evening when you get home, and only getting a small toilet walk will make me deeply unhappy.

I'll express it by barking all day, turning your yard into a minefield, doing my needs indoors, being unmanageable the rare times I'll find myself outside, and sometimes spending my days sunk, sad, lonely, and depressed, on my pillow.

You may think that I should be happy to be able to enjoy all this comfort while you go to work, but actually I’ll be exhausted and frustrated, because this is absolutely NOT what I'm meant to do, or what I need to be doing.

If you love me, if you've always dreamed of me, if my beautiful blue eyes or my athletic look make you want me, but you can't give me a real dog's life, a life that's really worth living according to my breed, and if you can't offer me the job that my genes are asking, DO NOT buy or adopt me!

If you like the way I look but aren't willing to accept my temperament, gifts, and traits derived from long genetic selection, and you think you can change them with only your good will, then DO NOT BUY OR ADOPT ME.

I’m a dog from the 21st century, yes, but deep inside me, the one who fought, the one who hunted, the one who pulled sleds, the one who guided and protected a herd still lives within.

So think **very** carefully before you choose your dog. And think about getting two, rather than one, so I won't be so very lonely waiting for you all day. Eight or ten hours is just a workday to you, but it's an eternity for me to be alone.

It’s National Lash Day 👁️

Here’s some signs to look out for, if you need a new mascara 🫦

💜 It’s been 2-3 months since you opened your mascara. Each time you pull the wand out of the mascara tube, air enters the tube and can cause bacteria to grow.

🎉 It doesn’t make the ‘pop’ sound when removing the wand from the tube

🧴 It is feeling clumpy or sticky it’s time to move on! It should glide smoothly

👃🏼 If it has a funny smell

Our Skyscraper Mascara is absolutely insane, I mean look at that volume length and lift 🌃

Also contains Lash Food to help your lashes Grow while it’s on 🧫

So, 10 years ago today this little beauty came into our lives, she filled it with 💯 unconditional love, slobbery kisses, outdoor walks every day.

I didn’t realise at the time how my life would change, Never was I ever to go to the loo, have a bath, eat, or sleep alone again 🤪 NOT that I minded, not really 🥰

She would look up at me with those adorable eyes and it would just melt my heart, she’d cheer me up and even nurse me after an operation and just simply by being there for me 🥰 she never left my side 🥰

Ruby was sadly taken wayyyyy too soon, it’s only been 4 months since she passed away and it makes my heart ache every single day 🥹🐶🐾👅🥰
