Hydrotherapy Explained

Hydrotherapy is a well-known alternative therapy and is popular with humans as well as dogs! The basic principle of hydrotherapy is that you or your dog can exercise, rebuild muscle strength, all in water - which supports the joints and bones and relieves some of the pressure on them. It supports a complete range of motion and improves circulation including cardio-vas

cular fitness. Hydrotherapy is proven to be effective for dogs suffering from:

* Arthritis * Hip Dysplasia * Degenerative Joint Disease * CDRM

As well as those recovering from orthopaedic surgery or major injuries that meant they couldn't exercise in their normal way. Many vets recommend it, and most pet insurance companies will pay for swimming sessions post op and injury. Your dog doesn't have to be ill or injured to benefit from hydrotherapy, is your dog carrying a few extra pounds, if so swimming is great to help lose the weight. Show dogs and working dogs also benefit from swimming in the warm water, keep your dog's muscles toned and his condition extra fit. Hydrotherapy is the natural, healthy way to keep your dog fit and to keep them in top condition. Frequently Asked Questions

Dear Member,

I’m writing with a few updates on NFDOG activity and issues which could affect you.

You may have seen a story about the dangers some flea and tick treatments are causing to local ponds and the insects which live in them. This is because a number of spot-on treatments contain a chemical called imidacloprid (or its derivative fibronil). It’s been banned in agriculture but is still legal in pet treatments. It’s now been found in local water – having transferred it is believed from dogs’ coats into the water when they play and swim. It can kill the wildlife in the ponds.

The advice to owners is simple. If you treat your dog with a spot-on product, please do not allow them into the water for four days while it dries.

It’s also helpful if when you buy your treatment from your vet or pet store, please check it’s environmentally friendly and doesn’t contain imidacloprid. Lots of alternatives are available and we are writing to vets and stores.
