I (Chris) am now an adviser for Critters Community Network CIC/Benji's Pet Bank using Turn2us' free adviser tools, so I can now offer Benefits Searches, PIP Helper and Grants Searches (for individuals)

Hopefully in 2025 we will be offering drop in style Benefit Advice Sessions as well as some appointment style sessions too, across Rotherham

If anyone has somewhere in the Rotherham area that we can use for these sessions please let us know

Last week we received these 3 pallets of Dry Dog Food & Treats, Dry Cat Food, Guinea Pig Food & Rabbit Food from Inspired Pet Nutrition

The Dog Food is from Barking Heads and Meowing Heads, Harringtons & Wagg (along with a some Hero (Asda), Mac's (Jollyes - The Pet People) & another brand that I believe is called McKenzies (or something similar)

The Dog Treats are from Wagg

The Dry Cat Food is from Harringtons

The Rabbit & Guinea Pig Food is from Twitch by Wagg

We also have another 4 pallets arriving from IPN sometime this week too

I also sourced another 33 pallets for some 20 other organisations across the UK

We are reaching out to invite you to join our dedicated team as a VOLUNTEER DELIVERY DRIVER. Your support can make a significant difference in the lives of pets and their owners who rely on our services. Drivers needed to cover S60, S61, S65 & S66 areas

As a volunteer driver, you will be responsible for delivering pet food to families in need within our community. PLEASE NOTE THAT DRIVERS WILL NEED TO COVER THEIR OWN FUEL COSTS, but the impact of your contribution will be invaluable.

PET FOOD BANK (BLUE CROSS GUIDELINES)

1) Pet food has been donated but it's out of date. Can it still be used?

Yes. If the 'best before' or 'sell-by' date has passed, food can still be used

• Dry food (eg biscuits or kibble) + 3 months from date on the packet

• Wet food (eg tins, sachets) + 3 years from date on the packet

• Try to avoid giving out of date food to young animals (ie. puppies and kittens & for short-term use only)

2) Pet food has been donated but the packaging is open and/or damaged. Is it safe to use?

• Wet food - if damaged/open, please discard (slight dents are fine)

• Dry food - if damaged/open, ok for a few weeks from the point it became exposed to the air

3) My client has a pet with medical and/or dietary requirements, can we help?

• If there is no food available to meet specific needs, please offer what is available and ask the client to telephone a local vet. A vet can advise on which ingredients are safe for their pet

4) If we run out of cat food, can we give dog food (and vice versa)?

• Always try to feed the correct food for the species of pet. If there is none available, it is safe in the very short term (2 days max)

5) There isn't enough pet food to meet demand. Can we recommend feeding human food?

• Yes, in small quantities, or to bulk out a pets' normal meals

• Rice, pasta, water-soaked oats, sweet potatoes or potatoes are all fine for this. You can also add plain boiled vegetables, eggs or plain-cooked meats

• Never give onions, milk, garlic, raisins, grapes, chocolate, avocados, certain nuts, and xylitol-sweetened foods

• Avoid salty, fatty and spicy foods. Never feed cooked bones

6) My client has a puppy/kitten but we don't have the right food in stock. Can we give adult versions?

• Yes, short term

• For very young pets try mashing or soaking the food

7) My client's pet has had an upset stomach from the food we gave. What can we do?

• If a pet is having a new type of food to normal, introduce this slowly over a few days

• If possible, mix the new food with the old, gradually reducing the older type of food

• If there is a stomach upset, stop feeding the pet food

• Replace with small amounts of scrambled egg, plain rice/pasta or plain cooked chicken After 24 hours, try the new food again but in very small amounts
