Impaction colic is when there is a blockage in your horsesโ gastrointestinal tract. This blockage results from digestive material becoming stuck, most commonly at the pelvic flexure, which is an area of the gut that narrows and turns 180 degrees around a hairpin bend. Any type of impaction results in pain and discomfort for your horse leading to classic signs of colic such as:
๏ง Reduction in faecal output
๏ง Small, firm and dry faecal balls
๏ง Dullness or a decreased appetite
๏ง Pawing at the ground
๏ง Kicking at their belly
๏ง Flank watching
๏ง Repeated lying down or rolling
๏ง Curling of the upper lip
๏ง Sweating

Impaction colic is most commonly seen over the winter months when horses are stabled more frequently. One of the main causes of impaction colic is dehydration - insufficient intake of fresh water can result in coarse and dry food becoming stuck leading to an impaction. Other causes of impaction colic include greedy horses gorging on hay/haylage, horses eating straw bedding and horses with dental issues that struggle to chew their forage.

A thorough examination by a vet including a rectal exam is essential. The main form of treatment for impaction colic is nasogastric intubation which involves passing a tube up your horseโs nose to their stomach. Fluids are then passed down the tube
