Italian diver Enzo Maiorca, while diving in the sea of Syracuse, felt something hit him in the back. He turned around and saw a dolphin.

He understood that he was not playing, but expressing something.
The dolphin dived down and Enzo followed him.

At a depth of 12 meters, caught in a net, was another dolphin.
After managing to free him and his wife, when the two dolphins surfaced, they emitted an almost human cry (this is how Maiorca described it). Dolphins can be held underwater for up to 10 minutes and then drown. The captive dolphin was a female about to give birth.

The male surrounded her and stood in front of Enzo and touched his cheek (like a kiss), a gesture of gratitude. Enzo ended his speech with the words:

"Until man learns to respect and communicate with the animal world, he will never be able to know his true role on this earth."

If in doubt, don’t go out! 🐶🌡️🚫

With the bank holiday weekend due to be a sunny one for some, we’re urging dog owners to be extra vigilant if they're planning on heading out with their furry friends! ☀️

Whilst most dog owners are aware that dogs die in hot cars, it’s also extremely important to remember that dogs die on hot walks too! 🐕🚶 When out and about in the sunshine it's easy for dogs to overheat and start suffering from heatstroke, just like poor Finlay here. 😔

Finlay was left fighting for his life after his body temperature soared to a life-threatening 108°F (42.2°C) during a UK heatwave, when he was out walking with his owner in their local park. Even though he was only out for a few minutes, that was all it took for him to overheat!

If it wasn’t for our vets at our Glasgow Pet Hospital giving him the emergency treatment he needed, Finlay could have died from severe heatstroke. 😢

With the warmer weather ahead, owners should be mindful of the signs of heatstroke. 🌡️ Heatstroke is a serious illness that develops when a dog gets too hot and is unable to lower its temperature. Left untreated, heatstroke can lead to seizures, organ failure and even death.

Any dog can develop heatstroke, but overweight, young, elderly, flat-faced, giant-breed, and thick-coated dogs are particularly at risk, even from just sitting out in hot weather.

Some of the most common triggers for heatstroke include:
🥵 Overheating during exercise - accounts for 74% of cases
☀️ Being outside in hot weather (even just sitting still) - accounts for 12.9% of cases
🚘♨️ Being trapped in a hot car - accounts for 5.2% of cases

See advice from our vets on what you can do to help prevent or provide first aid for heatstroke: http://pdsa.me/hpSh

🧊 Please note that ice cubes are perfectly safe for dogs to use as a treat to cool down on a hot day. It is when a dog is suffering from heatstroke that the drastic change in temperature from the ice can cause shock, and therefore should be avoided. A dog’s normal body temperature is around 38.6°C (101.5°F).

Please remember

Ahead of the summer, we’ve joined forces with animal welfare and veterinary organisations to raise awareness of the risks of walking dogs in hot weather, from sunstroke and overheating, to burning their pads on scorching pavements.

As part of the Dogs Die in Hot Cars coalition group, we’re now also highlighting that . You can help us to keep the nation’s dogs safe this summer by sharing hot weather advice for dog owners. Find out more at thekennelclub.org.uk/dogsdiehotwalks.
