The Traditional Leather Lead Company was established as a company in 2014. Every single aspect of my English bridle leather dog ware draws on a lifetime of experience in handling, training and working dogs, coupled with instructing prospective and current dog handlers in a huge variety of disciplines. On a personal level these include companion animal training (for myself and others), competition

obedience, competition agility, gun work, running dogs, shepherding and falconry. My career related dog experience ranges from me being the youngest Guide Dog Mobility Instructor to be trained in the UK at the time, to working as a Police dog handler, explosive search dog handler, drug dog handler, through to planning and running courses in security and protection dog handling, explosive, drug, cash, fi****ms, missing person, to***co and parasite detection. After 40 plus years of training and working all manner of breeds for all manner of jobs, I understand completely that the equipment you use must be up to the job. Every single item that leaves my workshop is made exclusively by hand for you, completely from scratch from start to finish, with the finest materials that I can source. Experience, function, longevity and quality are at the heart of everything that leaves my workshop. Paul.

Autumn is upon us, and as a result comes mud, rain and generally awful weather.

Your leather will need looking after to maintain its strength and integrity.

Here's a very boring video I made a few years ago, showing how I clean and treat my dogware.

Look after your stuff, you've paid enough for it!!!

I'm taking the week off next week, because as usual, I haven't had any time off since Christmas, and my fingers are screwed!

I thought I'd leave you all with some of the things I've learned since becoming the Dad to an equestrian Daughter:

1. I will always be wrong, even when I'm not.

2. Her horse will come before absolutely everything on this earth. No exceptions.

3. She has 2 types of clothes. Her school uniform and her 'Joddies'. That's it!

4. There will always be hay, straw, mud, crushed treats, and horse s**t in my car, her bedroom and the washing machine.

5. When it's her birthday or Christmas, her horse will receive far more presents than she does.

6. Horse girls swear a lot. In fact, a hell of a lot!

7. She will always have an 'eau du equine' about her.

8. Her horse will have more shoes in one year, than I've ever owned.

9. "Just tie her up naked to that wall please", is a phrase that is completely normal.

10. "The willy-washer was at the yard today", occasionally comes up in conversation, with no eyebrows raised whatsoever.

11. Hedges make for very effective brakes when all else fails.

12. "She's in season and keeps squirting at Johnny next door". Again, completely normal in conversation.

13. Someone actually washes wi***es for a living!

14. A tub of Sudocrem with a picture of a horse on the label, will cost £50.00 more than a standard tub of Sudocrem from Asda.

15. 'Purple spray' is an amazing, fix-all liquid treatment that my children have reaped the benefits of, despite the subsequent 3 days of bright purple staining on their skin.

16. When you de-worm the horse, you de-worm the child!

17. When at a 'Pony Club' clinic, and the instructor says "Woah, woah, woahhh", shouting "Sweet child of my-ee-ah-hine" in reply, is really not the done thing!!

18. Pony Club Mums are often more entertaining to watch than than the actual event itself.

19. Cheesy chips at any event, usually makes everything better.

20. The apple in the lunchbox taken to the competition, will be shared between horse and rider. The horse gets the first bite, the rider gets the second. Repeated until the horse finishes it. Emphasising the importance of point 16!

21. Frontline parasite spray is a far more effective treatment for nits, than any 'over the counter' human shampoo!

22. Even in my 40's, when a horse farts, I always chuckle!

23. You can never have enough bailing twine in your pocket.

24. The word 'Beans', should strike fear into the heart of every bloke alive.

Have a great weekend all.

A matchy-matchy set comprising one of my ever popular 'Training' leads, coupled with a personalised 1.5 inch wide 'Military style' flat collar.

The solid brass plaque isn't made by me, so I have to order them in, but the laser etched lettering, complete with a black infill, sets the collar off beautifully.

Both the collar and lead are available through my website, in varying widths and lengths to suit your needs.

Have a great weekend all.

Guess what???

It's back!!!!!

The 'Triggers broom' of horse headcollars, the same headcollar that I've made new straps for on several occasions.

A few weeks ago, I fixed this headcollar, predicting that it would be back in the workshop within a few months.

Well, the bloody horse has done it again!

This time he's done a job on the headpiece and buckle retaining strap, requiring complete replacements of those parts.

Other than the metalware, there are only three original parts left on this headcollar.

I'm thinking of opening a book on how long it will be, before everything has been replaced!

I love working with leather, as it's one of those materials that if looked after, will last for years and can often (not always!) be repaired.

A customer brought this lightweight saddle to me as one of the girth straps had snapped.

The saddle itself is very well used, very worn in, and as such looks as comfortable to sit on as the rocking chair in my kitchen.

It wasn't a big job at all, but very satisfying, knowing that this old favourite can now continue to be used safely, for the purpose it was intended.

The old strap was carefully removed, so as to not damage the webbing it was stitched to.

A replacement strap was then made and hand-stitched into place.

It didn't cost the earth either, as it didn't need to!

I'm just pleased that I could fix it, and allow the original saddle maker's work to continue to be used.

Being honest, I'm a bit jealous, as well used leather saddles are just the best.

There are some lovely horses out there, there are also some complete arseholes who will make it their mission to break absolutely every piece of tack that they can.

The wearer of this headcollar falls into the latter category!

This is the second (possibly third) repair I've had to do for this customer, as her horse is very 'special'!

This time he managed to snap both the noseband and chin piece, requiring a full replacement of both parts.

Give it a few months and the whole headcollar will compromise completely new parts!

Some before and after pictures.

One of my Police customers needed a new collar for their dog, as the leather had seen better days.

They asked if I could incorporate all of the brassware from the old collar, into the new one. This would be the brass plaque, the buckle and the dee ring.

As the brassware was still in good nick, this wasn't a problem. The new leather was prepared, then married to the original brass.

Dog handlers are a strangely sentimental breed of human, a trait which I thoroughly understand.

At least some of the memories gained , from previous dogs, will be preserved in this new neck-ware.

If I can, I will.

My absolute favourite combination of lead and collar for large breeds, and one which I use with my own Malinois on a daily basis.

The 'Public Order' lead offers fantastic options for very subtle, close control where needed, by the position of the two handles.

The 'Adjustable Half-Check' collar is just a great collar, pure and simple!

Anyone who tells you that a lead or collar alone will 'stop your dog from doing X, Y or Z', is talking out of their arse, however the correct lead and collar combination for your specific circumstances, will give you an advantage when training a behaviour.

I love this set-up, highly recommended for bigger dogs, and all available through my website!

When 1/2 an inch isn't enough, but 3/4 of an inch is too much, give me a call!

That's exactly what this customer did, as she wanted several items made to her specifications, at 5/8 inch wide.

The top collar in the picture is 3/4 inch wide, the second collar, the training lead and the standard lead are all 5/8.

That is where I differ from other dogware suppliers, as I cut the leather myself, directly from the hide, and can accommodate most sensible requests.

If it isn't on my website, just ask, as the worst that could happen is that I say no!

'The Training Lead' is the most popular Lead that I make.

I sell this style of lead to Police dog sections and private individuals in their droves.

They are such a versatile lead, as the clip at the top end allows the leash to be turned into a few different lengths, depending on the handler's need at the time.

They aren't just used for training purposes though. Many dog sections that I supply use them as a standard patrol lead. They also fit in equally with taking your companion dog for a walk around the village.

The possibilities are endless!

A nice little matchy-matchy collar and lead set, made this morning.

A 1 inch wide 'Military style' flat collar, paired with a 3/4 inch wide 'Braided' lead, both made from black English bridle leather.

There will be a very fashionable pooch , strutting their stuff on a street near you tomorrow.

This is a copy of the 'leather care sheet' that I send out with the things I make.

Inevitably, people don't read it, then contact me asking how they should treat their new, expensive leather things.

Buy a tin of this stuff (it will last you years).

For English bridle leather, this is the only stuff I recommend. I treat my own leather dog equipment once a month, or if it gets wet, I let it dry out naturally, then rub some of this amazing stuff into it.

I have a 34 year old lead that is still going strong, and has been nourished this way since the day it was made.

Look after your leather people!!

Before and after pics of a lead repair.

This training lead has served its owner well over the years, so well in-fact that the swivel joint on the clip had worn down over time, and was in danger of popping out.

I stripped out the old stitching, replaced the clip with a new one, and hand stitched it back together, so that it can be used for many more years to come.

This was only possible because the leather had been looked after. If it hadn't been so well cared for, the owner may be looking at having to buy a new lead instead.

Look after your leather and it will look after you.

Search for 'ko-cho-line' leather dressing and use it. This is the only stuff I recommend for treating bridle leather. Other stuff is available, but this stuff is amazing.

'The Adjustable Half-Check Collar'

I love these collars, as they are simple, strong, and once fitted correctly just slip on over the dog's head with no fuss at all.

They are the only collar that my own dogs wear these days.

The sizing mechanism is a simple 'billet', a hooked stud that is usually used to secure reins to a horse's bit. It is a small, solid, incredibly strong metal stud, with no moving parts to go wrong or catch on things.

They also make the collar look more streamlined and professional. A minimalist look, so to speak.

Available through my website.

I've never really been able to take a decent picture of my harnesses, as they go all floppy when attempting to get them to stand!

This picture is no exception!

Made to size for a small 'Bracco Italiano', comprising roughly 13 feet of leather, 4 solid brass buckles, two solid brass 'O' rings, one heavy duty, solid brass dee ring, 10 solid copper saddler's rivets, and 18 feet of thread.

In all, it takes just under 3 hours to make a harness from scratch. This one is 'Dark Havana' in colour.

It will be on the way to its new home tomorrow.

A quartet of collars form part of one order that I started this morning.

These Military style flat collars are all 1.5 inches in width and offer excellent neck support for larger breeds.

Typically, I'd recommend this width for Shepherds, Rotties, larger Malinois and larger Labrador types, although each individual's requirements are different.

The lighter shade is 'Australian nut', the darker shade is 'Dark Havana'.

I hope you're all enjoying the Bank holiday, I've been in the workshop this morning creating!

The customer wanted a custom 'coupler lead' for her pooch, along with a matching collar. She also wanted them stitched together with a red thread, so I obliged!

The lead and collar are both 3/4 inch in width, and the total length of the lead is 4ft. I wish I'd brushed the fluff off the collar before taking a picture, but it's all packaged up now and I can't be arsed unpacking it!

The idea of the lead is to be able to clip it to both a collar and a harness, or to walk 2 dogs on the same lead, without faffing.

The red thread on the Dark Havana leather looks stunning.

I'm clocking off now, so I can have a bit of the bank holiday to myself.

Here is the result.

My 'Braided' leads contain no stitching and no rivets to keep them together.

The leather is braided back onto itself to form an incredibly strong joint at the handle and clip end.

These braided joints will tighten even further over time, as the leather beds in.

They look quite pretty too!

This one is a 3/4 inch, black version, available in different widths and lengths through my website.

I'm now off for a beer!

"That extra inch makes a hell of a difference", is a phrase that is not uncommon to me, and in some circumstances is spot on!

On the left is a 2 inch wide 'Military style flat collar', on the right is a 1 inch wide version for comparison.

Not only is the 2 inch version wider, the dee ring used in its construction is proper heavy duty, typically used for shire horse harnesses.

This is an example of where that extra inch really matters.

The 'Adjustable Half-Check' collar.

I love these collars, so much so that my own dogs wear them when walking out.

When sized correctly, they can't be backed out of, but their design allows them to be simply popped over the dog's head when heading out of the door, without the need for fiddling!

The adjustment mechanism is a solid 'billet', a tiny hooked stud that is permanently set into the leather. In my opinion, they are far more secure than buckles, and on this style of collar, it sits flush and unobtrusively, not adding any bulk at all.

Horsey people will recognise the billet, as they are typically used to secure reins to a horse's bit. Yes they are that strong!

Available through my website.

Have a great weekend all.

This is one of a pair of customised leads, for a customer.

It's a mash-up of my 'public order' lead and 'slip collar', rolled into one.

So, the 14 year old little Miss TTLLCo (the one who bleeds Mrs TTLLCo and I dry) has quite a talent.

She's always moaning that she's skint, and we've been trying to encourage her to make her own money, so that she can spend it on the sassy, half-tonne chestnut jumping machine that occupies so much of her time, and so much more of our bank statements!

This is a picture that she drew with pastels, of Vinnie, a friend's dog. It's the first dog portrait that she has ever done from a photo.

I suppose this is a bit of a 'Dad-brag', but Miss TTLLCo is not convinced that others would want to pay for her work.

I'd welcome any thoughts.

Paul.

Our Story

Having spent 30 plus years training and working dogs in a huge variety of disciplines, from gun work and falconry, to shepherding, Police work, drug, explosive substance, bedbug and missing person detection, I realise how difficult it is to find quality, aesthetically pleasing, hard wearing, long lasting and functional working and pet dog equipment, so I began to make my own. Using the same finest English bridle leather hides, which are cured and supplied to the saddlers of the British Monarchy, all of my dog leads and collars are hand cut, hand styled, hand dyed and hand stitched by me, using traditional English saddlery techniques. By hand stitching with a saddler's clam, an awl and 2 needles, I pay attention to each individual stitch made, using a technique which ultimately results in a far superior and stronger stitch than those made by any machine. The emphasis on the leads and collars I make is a simple rustic elegance and functionality. As a working dog handler and instructor, I have come to realise that an individual's choice of lead is very personal. Over time a bridle leather lead will take on it's own personality and will develop it's own unique 'feel' about it. As the owner of a 20 year old English bridle leather dog lead, which is still in daily use with a variety of dogs, I understand the importance of using quality materials. I do not use cheaper alternatives in the manufacture of any dog ware. I prefer to use solid brass clips, studs and rings, but can add chromed fittings where requested. Traditionally, leather with brass fittings is stitched with a 'gold' thread (dark yellow) and those with silver coloured fittings are stitched with white thread, in order to compliment the colour of the metal ware. I carry a small amount of stock, but most of my equipment is passionately made to order, with an attention to detail, ensuring a perfect fit, usually within just a few days of ordering. Although I have a 'standard' range, should you want something a little more personal, drop me a line. Thanks for looking, Paul
