Great advice as we head into firework season!
š FIREWORKS
That time of year will soon creep up on usā¦ You might think this post is a little early, however thereās ways you can start to prepare your dog/s now.
Since Otis was a puppy Iāve always played firework sounds/videos and gradually made it louder overtime. Of course, this isnāt like the real thing as it lacks the physical feelings and emotions that come with it. However, itās something to familiarise them with so they become confident and settled around the unexpected loud explosions.
Some useful tips around bonfire night:
ā¢ Take your dog on a long walk just before the sun goes down, so theyāre exhausted and will take less notice in the fireworks. (Or may even sleep through the fireworks if youāre lucky!)
ā¢ Feed them a little earlier than usual, just before the sun goes down. Therefore theyāve been walked and fed, and will know itās time to settle for the day. Meaning hopefully theyāll wind down and maybe snooze.
ā¢ Try introducing them to firework sounds/videos and gradually build it up, so they become comfortable around the noises and instant flashes.
ā¢ Create a safe space for them, so if they become unsettled they have a hideaway as such to take shelter in.
ā¢ Increase the volume of your tv/radio to try and disguise the fireworks outside.
ā¢ Completely cover all windows to reduce the sounds and bright flashes of the fireworks.
ā¢ Ensure your garden is completely escape proof, or if you donāt have a garden/no secure fencing, place your dog on a lead when letting them out for toilet time. (Obviously if you can, try to avoid toilet breaks when itās dark and fireworks are to be expected. I say this, as last year I personally experienced fireworks starting when it was still light, meaning one of my own dogs become spooked and almost dashed away. Reminder - always be prepared!)
ā¢ Have lickimats, kongs, long lasting chews etc to hand to try and keep them occupied.
ā¢ Classic FM always broadcasts pet friendly tunes during bonfire night to help keep them calm.
Letās keep calm as our pets always rely on our characteristics to reflect on, stay safe, and be prepared.
