DOGS ON LEADS 🐾

There is no blanket law requiring dogs to be kept on a lead in all public spaces. However, there are a series of orders that mean you have to leash your dog in certain places in your local area, for example children’s play areas, sports pitches, roads, parks and beaches.

The Highway Code also says that dogs should be kept on a short lead along roads, pavements and on paths shared with horse riders or cyclists (rule 56).

Many local authorities have introduced Public Spaces Protection Orders over the last couple of years to restrict dogs to being walked on lead (or excluded from the area entirely) in certain public spaces. Look out for signage detailing restrictions. We also recommend checking your local council’s website for details of any restricted areas.

🚨What can happen if I break this law?🚨

Local authorities have the power to introduce these orders under a number of different laws, and can issue fines or fixed penalty notices for those who don’t comply.

Law: Road Traffic Act 1988, section 27; Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014

Lucky for some, certain dog breeds have naturally long and well insulated coats that help keep them warm when the weather gets tough. Unfortunately, lots of other types of dog are more vulnerable. During winter, small breeds with short coats and toy breeds will struggle to keep warm. However, larger breeds can also get chilly despite their size due to their thin coats.

🐾 Small and short coated dog breeds 🐾
Jack Russels
Poodles
Whippets
Dachshunds
Chihuahuas
Basset Hounds
Yorkshire Terriers

🐾 Large and short coated dog breeds 🐾
Dalmations
Staffies
Greyhounds
Doberman Pinschers

All these breeds are more susceptible to the cold however, any dog will get cold if left in the cold or wet for too long

KEEP YOUR DOGS WARM THIS WINTER

DOG COATS
Skinny and thin coated dogs can benefit from a warm jacket. Be careful of putting a coat on a fluffy dog though as it can actually stop their fur trapping heat by pushing out the air in their coat that works as natural insolation.

KEEP ACTIVE
Movement will generate body heat so keep your dog active when outside.

ROAD GRIT
Be aware of chemicals such as grit and salt on the roads as it can be an irritant to a dog’s paws and pads, and their noses too when they are sniffing. Ice and snow can also cause irritation.

PAW PROTECTION
There are some brilliant balms on the market to protect paws and pads from cold conditions. Sensitive dogs will benefit from dog-friendly booties to keep their pads protected in the cold weather.

SHORTER WALKS
If your dog is not used to the cold it is important to stick to shorter walks to start off with until they get used to it. Heading outside during the warmer part of the day (11am-3pm) is also a good place to start.

⚠️BE AWARE⚠️
Important signs of cold related illness to watch out for include shivering, whining, reluctance to move, holding paws up, seeking warmth, or acting disoriented. If you see any of these, head home immediately and warm up. If symptoms continue, please contact a vet for guidance.

⛈️STORM BERT⛈️

As a dog owner, it’s important to be prepared so that you can protect your dog and keep them calm during harsh or noisy weather.

There are a number of steps you can take to help keep your dog safe and make your dog feel more at ease.

1. Top up your dog’s water bowl. Dogs that are nervous or stressed pant more and become thirsty.

2. Feed your dog before the storm is due to arrive. Once the wind and the rain begin, your dog may be too anxious to eat.

3. Walk your dog well before the storm is due as it may be some time before it’s safe for your dog to venture outside and relieve themselves.

4. Always ensure your dog wears a collar with an ID tag on it in case they manage to escape. You should also check that their microchip details are up to date too.

5. The key to keeping your dog calm is to remain calm yourself, or at least to act in a calm way. By keeping your body language relaxed and confident, you show your dog that that they have nothing to worry about.

6. Before a storm starts, close all windows and curtains, so any unsettling sounds and sights from outside are hidden.

7. Make a safe den for your dog to retreat to if they feel scared. You could drape a thick duvet over the top of it to make it more sound proof, but make sure that the duvet is secure and can’t fall on to your dog. Fill the den with their favourite blankets, toys, or an item of unwashed clothing to help them feel more secure.

8. If you’re out walking and get caught in a storm, remember to keep your dog on their lead and get home as quickly as possible

When considering walking your dog in cold weather, there’s a pretty simple rule to live by – if it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for your dog.

But like humans, every dog is different. Where some dogs seem to be made for snow and wet weather, others can struggle in even the slightest of chills. The vet experts at Joii have given some guidelines to help you decide if you should brave the elements or stay in the warmth.

Just looking at the temperature on the thermometer (or if you’re like us, on your phone’s weather app) isn’t enough, you also need to take into account wind chill, wet conditions (rain or damp ground) and how sunny the day is. If in doubt, keep your walk short or skip it all together if your dog can toilet in the garden instead.

As Spring arrives its great to see the lambs in the fields and other livestock out at last.

Please when walking your dog and enjoying our lovely countryside keep your dog on a lead when you are anywhere near livestock, even if they are in another field.

Keep to public footpaths, pick up after your dog and either put in a litter bin or take home with you.

Gates need to be left as you find them and please don't feed animals unless you have the permission of the owner, they could be on a special diet or what you think tastes nice could seriously affect an animal.

Any land owners or farmers who would like one of the Warwickshire Police 'Dog on Lead' signs please email [email protected].

Thank you.
