Furze Aid

Furze Aid Small local hedgehog rescue facility. My longer term aims are to be able to provide rehabilitation and foster care as funding allows.

Furze Aid was set up to provide additional local care facilities for hedgehogs; sometimes known as 'furzepigs', taking their name from the spikey hedge plant furze (more commonly gorse). Having completed the First Aid, Care and Rehabilitation of Hedgehogs Course at Vale Wildlife Hospital and Rehabilitation Centre I wanted to provide care services for hedgehogs in my local area. Currently the equip

ment I have been able to purchase will enable me to provide basic emergency care for hedgehogs until they can be taken to a rescue or hospital with more extensive facilities.

This week is hedgehog awareness week. A good time to start doing any little things you can to help hedgehogs...
Make a gap in fence
Leave out meaty dog or cat food with water
Manage garden to encourage insects as a natural food source
Offer shelter and bedding materials such as straw
Remember you probably won't see them often but they are there and if you make provision for them they will visit.

Mum (Hazel) and baby (Catkin) have moved into new accommodation in the garden today. Both very healthy, no parasites, Hazel weighing 1268g and Catkin 280g. Now they can do what hoggies do (with support feeding as long as the want it) !

10 days now and what a change.... The remaining hoglet has gone from being fully dependent on mum to being relatively independent. Feeding on kitten biscuits well now and out much more on its own, steadier on its feet.

Well it's been nearly a week since I took in the young family. Unfortunately I found one of the hoglets dead on Thursday, its tummy didn't look right so perhaps it would have passed away anyway. Fortunately mum hog and the remaining hoglet seem to be doing well and have settled into their temporary lodgings.

It's so infuriating when a perfectly healthy hedgehog family has to be disturbed simply because someone doesn't want it in their garden. So I'm now fostering a mother with 2 gorgeous babies simply because people refused to leave it alone in their garden. They probably would have naturally moved on in a month or so anyway.

Female hedgehog from local rescue released tonight. In the clip she has picked up the scent of the males that have been using the hog café recently and gone off to explore.
