Mental stimulation is key to a happy dog, here Finny is in work mode scouring an area for a hidden ball. This is so much more rewarding and enriching for him than simply playing fetch🐶🐾

Depending on the dog and tge situation I use a number of recall methods with the dogs on groups including whistle, touch, name/command and in this instance a hand signal. Well done Maggie, always checking in with me!🐶🐾

Group walks aren’t a free-for-all, they provide an excellent opportunity to brush up on important life skills such as loose lead walking around distractions. Luna (left, 13months) and Kobe (right, 2yrs) haven’t quite mastered it yet but they’re both well in the way to success🙏

Group walks are a great opportunity to practice a structured pack migration. We do this every walk for a few minutes at a time as it reinforces my position as their calm, loving pack leader who they look up to for guidance. Great work here from Ada, Daisy, Isla, Lucy, Ruby and Sherlock🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶

Today I worked on non-verbal instruction with the dogs in group walk 2. The idea is to encourage regular eye contact (checking in) and add another tool to help build reliable recall. When a dog looks at me I stop, point directly at them then give a hand signal indicating I want them to come and sit by me.

Great work from Hugo, walking beautifully to heal, taking his cues from watching me and reacting accordingly. This is only part of his wal, at other times I let him “break” so he can stop and sniff, go to the toilet etc, but when he’s in this mode his sole job is to stay by my side in a calm relaxed manner.

The fact I’ve whistle trained both Bruce and Koda gives me the confidence to know they’ll return whatever situation they’re in. Here they’re loving a game of chase, getting out to around 60 meters but both respond instantly to the whistle.

What do we do on a group walk? We do training, build confidence, play games, encourage appropriate socialising, improve leash walking, engage their noses, amongst many other things. Walking your dogs is far more than taking your dogs for a walk!!!
