Under Schedule 3 of the Veterinary Surgeons Act, only registered veterinary nurses and student veterinary nurses can perform certain procedures delegated by veterinary surgeons in the same practice.

Meet Holly from Salisbury, a registered vet nurse who performs sutures and many other critical tasks. Both students and nurses are trained in these essential procedures, ensuring top-notch care for our furry friends.

How to tell if your dog has ticks πŸ€”

Ticks usually appear as small grey bean shaped objects attached to your dog’s skin – anywhere! They will embed themselves wherever they can get. Sometimes you may find them whilst grooming or stroking your dog. It is a good idea if you have been out for a walk in the countryside to just feel your dog all over and examine any little lumps you find.

Sometimes a mole or skin tag can look like a tick so if in doubt, give us a call and we'll be happy to help πŸ’™

Prevention is better than cure when it comes to parasites πŸ’ͺ

Not all cats have the same lifestyle or are at the same risk from parasites. This will depend on whether your cat lives indoors all the time or is free to roam. It will depend on where you live geographically and whether your cat likes to hunt or not. There is no one treatment plan which is right for every moggy.

Discuss your cats’ needs at your health checks and annual vaccination appointment πŸ’™

Parasites in dogs πŸ‘‡

Fleas:
Fleas are common parasites in dogs and they can act as vectors for a number of infections, including some that affect humans.

Fleas are a major cause of irritation and skin disease in dogs and they are also a vector for the flea tapeworm Dypilidium caninum. This is an important reason for making sure your dog has protection against fleas, since human ingestion of an infected flea can transmit this worm to the human gut where it can thrive.

Ticks:
Ticks are blood sucking parasites that can infest our dogs. They will even crawl onto and bury themselves in human skin!

Ticks themselves are rather horrid, irritating and painful as they attach themselves by burrowing their heads into the skin. If this happens, the skin often reacts leaving a nasty inflamed sore which can get infected.

Worms:
Lungworm - This is caused by the worm Angiostrongylus vasorum. It is sometimes called French heart worm as the mature worms live in the blood vessels of the heart. This worm causes serious health problems in dogs and can be fatal if not diagnosed and treated.

Round worms - The dog roundworm is very common! It is the worm that looks a bit like small spaghetti with adults measuring as much as 15 cm in length. Most puppies are born with some worms as they can get them via their mother’s milk. If they have a lot of worms it can make them poorly with tummy upsets and failure to thrive.

Tapeworms - It is really important to treat dogs regularly for tapeworms as although even infected dogs can remain free of clinical disease, they act as carriers for the life stages of the worms that can seriously affect animal and human health.

Exciting news! At Pet Practice Billingshurst and Rustington, we can now offer a new service for our clients and patients: Canine Rehabilitation.

This includes physiotherapy, laser treatment, Western acupuncture and much more. These treatments are often essential in cases of orthopaedic and neurological conditions, as well as after surgery or injury.

They also include management of chronic conditions such as osteoarthritis and other sources of pain in dogs. They are performed by our newest staff member, Dr Pete van Dongen, MRCVS, who works in our Billingshurst and Rustington practices. If you are interested and would like more information on canine rehabilitation, please do not hesitate to contact us by phone or email.

β€˜Hunter’, a nearly 12 year-old Lurcher, became our first patient to benefit from two forms of rehabilitation, in this case laser treatment and acupuncture as he was suffering from chronic back pain πŸ’™

Parasites in cats πŸ‘‡

The three major groups of parasites which are a constant threat to our cats are worms, fleas and ticks.

Fleas:
πŸ‘‰ They can cause severe irritation and skin disease in your cat.
πŸ‘‰ Fleas can cause general illness, loss of weight and, in young cats, failure to thrive as a result of chronic blood loss.
πŸ‘‰ They can transmit tapeworms to your cat.

Tapeworms:
Once a cat has fleas, it is almost inevitable that it will end up with tapeworms. Cats can get tapeworms by grooming themselves and ingesting the fleas which are intermediate hosts for the tapeworm species Dypilidium caninum.

Ticks:
As with dogs, ticks follow the same life cycle. Immature ticks (nymphs) climb up grasses, find a host passing by and change by moulting into an adult tick. The adult tick eventually finds its final host and will attach itself to the unsuspecting moggy. As cats are likely to put their faces into everything including small furry animals acting as hosts to ticks, they very easily pick up ticks on their face and neck.

We always want to prevent parasites, rather than treat them. With our annual HealthCare Plan you can do just that! A monthly direct debit will spread the cost of preventive treatments, which for convenience can even be posted directly to your home πŸ’™

Ozzy came for his first vaccination at our Billingshurst branch on Thursday, He is a little, male, terrier crossbred dog and he is very cute indeed! πŸ’™

He was very brave and simply ate some treats whilst our vet Pete did the injection. Ozzy was also signed up to our Health Plan, making sure he will benefit from ongoing preventative health care, at a vastly discounted rate. And, to top it all off, his owner got him insured already too! πŸ™Œ

It seems Ozzy could not have landed on his feet any better! Isn’t he gorgeous? 😍

Local Anaesthetics

Here at Pet Practice we are are passionate about ensuring all our patients are as comfortable as possible. One of the methods we use is local anaesthetics.

Did you know that pain is best treated before it occurs? Local anaesthetics are a great way to combat post operative pain as they stop the body processing pain signals before they reach the brain, meaning post operatively your pets will be more comfortable due to the early treatment of pain.

Our Vets and Nurses are passionate about using local anaesthetics and learning new skills. Pictured we have Rachael from our Team East providing Ruby the Greyhound with a sciatic nerve block prior to her undergoing surgery to her foot.
