Guinea Pig awareness week - day 7 🐹✨

Wow! How time flies. Two years ago I posted about our New Guinea Pig enclosures.

I was so lucky to find these being sold at an incredible price on marketplace as a local boarding facility was shutting. I’m even more greatful for my amazing dad who did the majority of the hard work taking it down, back and fourth (four times) to bring it home and then reassembling it at home!

These blocks have allowed us to offer safe spaces to even more Guinea Pigs in need, and not just that, all the groups got upgraded to even bigger sized enclose, as wellbeing is so important to us. I don’t think videos do it’s size justice🫣

Of course a lot has changed - I gave up with trays for hay and offer a lot bigger hay piles now. I have got a lot more hides and enrichment filling the enclosures. And the hay racks are now for special treats, and not everyday hay. As well as going from 7 Piggies to 19 at our home🏡

It’s Guinea Pig Awareness week - Day 6🐹✨

Are you familiar with some of the common health issues seen in Guinea Pigs and what to look out for?

Let’s discuss a few…

Flystrike occurs when fly larvae hatch on Guinea Pigs and feed off of them. Dirty or damp places will often attract flies to lay so keeping a clean enclosure is essential. Injuries are also another place that will attract, so ensuring to health check your piggies often for any injuries. Generally this will happen near the rear of the animal and have a wet back end from lack of grooming or potential other illness.

Ringworm is a fungal infection which causes red, flaky and bald patches on the guinea pigs fur. Stress can often make piggies more susceptible to it as well as poor hygiene. It’s highly contagious, and can be caught directly from another animal or indirectly from a contaminated surfaces.

Gut Statis is the slowing (or stopping) of the digestive system which happens in Guinea Pigs when not given the opportunity to constantly graze or in high levels of stress. It can also be the sign of an underlying issue and presents itself in lethargy, bloat and lack of appetite.

Mites are small parasites that can live and produce on a host. They can cause excessive itching and irritation of the skin, leading to hair loss and infection.

Guinea pigs teeth constantly grow, so when not provided with an adequate diet (hay especially) and knawing toys made of safe wood it can lead to dental disease. They can also suffer from mallocclusions, which is an improper alignment of the teeth, due to poor diet or injury. Most issues with the mouth will present in drool, loss of appetite and sometimes sinus infections.

Lots of these issues can be caused by poor genetics, poor husbandry or high levels of stress. All these issues require veterinary attention - and remember Guinea Pigs are exotic pets so a specialist vet is needed!

It’s day 4 of Guinea pig Awareness week✨🐹

We wanted to highlight some piggies who are in need of a home. Cheshire Guinea Pig Rescue is a rescue who is committed to helping out piggies in need and at the moment adoptions (especially on boys) are at a standstill.

We’ve been a foster for CGPR for a little while now and they pour so much into the care and love of their piggies.

If you’re looking to add some Guinea Pigs into your life, check them out, and consider adopting a pair of boars. They are just as loving and character full as girls💙

It’s Guinea Pig Awareness Week - Day 3✨🐹

Let’s introduce our 11 boy residents! 💙

Kovu and Koda are our shyest piggies, despite us adopting them back when they were just little babies! They came from the same situation as Kiara. These boys have some beautiful markings to see when they finally decide to leave the comfort of their bendy bridge.

Lumier and Cogsworth arrived along with their brother scuttle. Trios of boars are very unlikely to work, but the boys seemed settled enough for me to not separate initially. They were okay for about a year and then a behaviour change made me decide to split Lumier from the others. Lumier is named after his beautiful bright colour and Cogsworth has a straight split down his face that remind me of the hands of a clock!

Zazu came to us as a foster from CGPR who was recovering from his neuteur, however after his recovery we decided to try him in the herd and he loved his ladies so we adopted him!

Baloo and Wazowski (rescue names Odin and Casper) are our forever fosters from Cheshire Guinea Pig Rescue.
Baloo has the best hair which requires several haircuts a year as he’s known for stashing his bedding in it! Wazowski only has one eye, but that’s does not stop him scaring me with death naps and causing chaos.

Owl came to us to keep Lumier company. We wanted a similar aged pig so headed to CGPR for a speed dating session. At first, Lumi was a bit too enthusiastic for Owl but when he settled they became best friends and are now inseparable.

After loosing Cogsworth, we added Hook to the family. Hook had been alone for several years but soon took to following his brother around everywhere.

Skeleton and Zero had been living in a less than ideal enclosure. When Zero arrived we noticed he had some respiratory issues (which we investigated with our vet’s) but that doesn’t stop him and his brothers antics! They are always at the door waiting to be fed.

Boys are often overlooked when people look at adopting piggies - whilst I love that my girls can live together in a big herd. I wouldn’t trade my boys for the world🌍

Lets’s introduce our 7 female residents💗

Kiara of our current piggies was the first to join us from Jackson's Animal Rescue along with her brothers who will be introduced soon. The rescue had rescued a few older piggies who were pregnant resulting in a lot of baby piggies needing homes! Kiara is shy - but really feeds off the other pigs for support.

Timon and Pumba joined us from Cheshire Guinea Pig Rescue as Kiara lost her sister Nita, and instantly showed withdrawal signs. We got in contact with the rescue who were super helpful and we went to meet the girls. Timon is our pig with the biggest belly🫣
Pumba is a sweet girl, who unfortunately has a head tilt as a result of an ear infection, which was resolved with medication but the tilt stayed.

Bambi joined us when her owner fell ill and needed a forever home for her and her sister - we call Bambi our baby of the herd as she is just a smaller pig in comparison. She’s a very striking ginger!

Mushu, the sweetest girl who loves cuddles, came to us after living outside alone with a rabbit! She had never seen a pig before but instantly bonded to Bambi and slotted in the herd.

Eeyore came to us as her owner could no longer provide her with the care she deserved. She was alone at the time but enjoyed having friends instantly. She is our noisiest pig and lets you know if she’s been picked up!

Meeko and Sq**rt recently joined us from CGPR. Meeko is aggressive to guinea pigs who isn’t her sister Sq**rt - whilst Sq**rt is a blind piggy. They both have heaps of personality and have slotted into the family well🐾

It’s Guinea Pig Awareness Week - Day 2🐹✨

Let’s talk enclosures….

A pair of guinea pigs require a space of 120cmx60cm as a minimum but providing more than this is always recommended where possible.

This minimum spaces allows the guinea to stretch, run and enjoy their space whilst also having provided enrichment. This space needs to be unbroken floor space (not levels) and should be provided 24/7.

All of our enclosures exceed this minimum as we believe it is super important to provide as much space as possible!

We like to provide at least one of each item per Guinea pig - so a pair of piggies get at least two hides, two bowls and two bottles for example. This prevents any squabbles over items, although they always try and eat out of the same bowl no matter how many you give them, but choice is essential for helping your guinea pigs thrive!

Guinea Pigs poo around 200 times a day - which can make their enclosures messy fast! It’s important you choose a safe substrate to house your piggies on to keep them comfortable - some people choose fleece and some prefer to use bedding. There is no right or wrong as long as you regularly maintain their area!

Providing species appropriate enrichment is super important - we love to give huge hay piles that take up half the enclosure as this allows piggies to burrow, create tunnels and hide in a completely natural way. We also like to scatter feed where we can to encourage foraging behaviours and provide an option of toys which help them knaw their teeth down!

Not providing the correct enclosure type and size can often lead to frustration and stress behaviours, as well as antisocial behaviours towards other guinea pigs.

Photo shows enclosure for forever foster pigs Wazowski and Baloo (rescue names Odin and Casper). They hay covers a lot of their items such as other houses and toys which is always fun to look through during cleaning time🫣

Tiny hay bale or giant Guinea Pig?? 🫣

I can let you know it’s definitely not a giant piggy! Little girl Sq**rt is definitely our smallest pig in size - small but mighty is what they say!

Her and her sister Meeko have settled in well since arriving with us from 💙 Sq**rt is blind but that doesn’t stop her being full of character - and Meeko who’s a very anxious pig has come out of her shell so much!

Very special girls I’m greatful to have adopted from Cheshire GP rescue!

We celebrate Mr Wazowski (Rescue name Odin) 7th Birthday today!

Wazowski is one of our two forever foster pigs for Cheshire Guinea Pig Rescue. He only has one eye but that doesn’t stop him being super active and loving🤍🧡
