🐰It's Rabbit Awareness Week!

🐰Running until Friday 28th June, this week was created by the Rabbit Awareness Action Group and Burgess Pet Care, to raise awareness of responsible rabbit ownership.
Recognising that rabbits are one of the UK’s most owned, but least understood, animals, Rabbit Awareness Week (RAW) works to educate more owners than ever before and continue to help improve rabbits’ welfare. This year's theme is "Healthy diet, Happy Bunnies!" 🌱 most importantly, how rabbits' diet impacts their health.
If you haven’t already, download the owners pack here: https://rabbitawarenessactiongroup.co.uk/downloads/owner-pack/ or follow on Facebook for a wealth of helpful tips: https://www.facebook.com/RabbitAwarenessWeek2023

☀️☀️As the temperatures rise, it’s essential to be aware of the risk of heatstroke in our furry friends. Dogs can easily overheat, and heatstroke can be life-threatening. ⚠️
Here’s what you need to know to keep your pup safe:

🐾⚠️What is Heatstroke in Dogs?⚠️
Heatstroke occurs when a dog’s body temperature rises to dangerous levels, usually above 40°C (104°F), and they can't cool down. It can cause severe organ damage and be fatal if not treated promptly.

⚠️ Which animals are more susceptible to heatstroke?
* Animals that are overweight
* Flat faced breeds such as Pugs and French Bulldogs, or Persian cats
* Pets with thick coats
* Old or very young animals
* Animals with pre-existing conditions, particularly airway, lung or heart problems

⚠️ Signs and Symptoms:
* Excessive Panting: Rapid, heavy breathing is a key sign your dog is overheating.
* Dehydration: Dry nose, dry mouth, and thick saliva.
* Lethargy and Weakness: Lack of energy, difficulty standing or walking.
* Vomiting and Diarrhea: Often with blood.
* Collapse: In severe cases, your dog may faint or collapse.
* Red or Pale Gums and Tongue: A sign of poor circulation.
* Increased Heart Rate: Your dog’s heartbeat may be fast and irregular.

⚠️ Prevention Tips:
* Provide Plenty of Water: Always have fresh, cool water available.
* Use a fan or air conditioning: To help evaporate heat loss
* Avoid Peak Heat: Walk your dog early in the morning or late in the evening when it’s cooler.
* Never Leave Dogs in Cars: Even with windows open, cars can become dangerously hot very quickly.
* Create Shade: Ensure your dog has access to shady areas if they are outside.
* Limit Exercise: Reduce intense activities and opt for gentle play during hot days.
* Use Cooling Products: Consider cooling vests, mats, or bandanas designed for dogs.
* Groom Appropriately: Regular grooming can help keep your dog’s coat in a manageable state for better temperature regulation.

⚠️ What to Do If You Suspect Heatstroke:
1. Move to a Cooler Area: Get your dog into the shade or indoors where it’s cooler.
2. Cool Down Your Dog: Use cool (not cold) water to wet your dog. You can use a hose, wet towels, or place them in a shallow pool of water. Avoid using ice or very cold water as it can cause shock.
3. Offer Water: Let your dog drink small amounts of water or lick ice cubes.
4. Contact US Immediately: Heatstroke is a medical emergency!
Let’s make sure our pets enjoy the summer safely! Share this post to spread awareness about the dangers of heatstroke in dogs. 🌞🐶
Stay cool and keep those tails wagging! 🐾❤️

The 2024 World Veterinary Day is celebrated today and this year has the theme ‘Vets are essential health workers’
🐾🩺 Did you know that veterinary surgeons play a crucial role not just in animal health but also in safeguarding human health? ⚕️Through their expertise in zoonotic diseases, they prevent illnesses in animals that could potentially be transferred to humans. 🦠🔬
🚜 Their work in monitoring and controlling food safety from farm to table ensures that the food we consume is safe, helping to prevent foodborne diseases. 🥩🍽️
🔬By contributing to biomedical research, veterinary surgeons enhance our understanding of both human and animal anatomy and physiology, paving the way for advancements in medical treatments and surgical techniques that benefit all species. 🧬🚀

In short, World Veterinary Day is an important recognition to the veterinary surgeons out there for their dedication and hard work who not only keep our pets happy but also our communities healthy 👏💚

🎈🐹 Happy World Hamster Day! 🐹🎈
While we celebrate the joy and companionship our little furballs bring into our lives, it's also a fantastic opportunity to talk about the specific needs of these adorable creatures. Caring for a hamster goes beyond providing food and water; it involves creating a nurturing environment that caters to their unique behaviours and physical requirements. Here are some key aspects of hamster care to keep in mind:
🏠 A Spacious Habitat
Hamsters need room to explore, play, and exercise. A spacious cage with a solid floor, plenty of bedding for burrowing, and a secure lid is essential. Remember, bigger is always better when it comes to their living space!
🏋️‍♂️ Exercise and Stimulation
An exercise wheel is a must-have to help your hamster stay active and healthy. Additionally, provide tunnels, climbing opportunities, and chew toys to keep them entertained and engaged. Hamsters are curious creatures and thrive in an environment that challenges them mentally and physically.
🍽️ Balanced Diet
A well-balanced diet is crucial for your hamster's health. High-quality hamster pellets should be the foundation of their diet, supplemented with small amounts of fresh fruits and vegetables. Avoid sugary and high-fat treats, and always have fresh water available.
🌙 Respect Their Nocturnal Nature
Hamsters are nocturnal, meaning they are most active at night. During the day, they prefer to rest undisturbed. It's important to respect their sleep cycle and schedule interaction times accordingly.
🚑 Regular Health Checks
Monitor your hamster for signs of illness, such as lethargy, lack of appetite, or changes in behaviour. Regular health checks with small animals can catch potential health issues early.
🧼 Cleanliness is Key
Maintain a clean and hygienic habitat for your hamster by regularly cleaning their cage, replacing bedding, and ensuring their food and water are fresh.
This World Hamster Day, let's commit to providing the best care possible for our furry friends.

It's Good Friday!🐥
Easter wouldn’t be complete without lots of chocolate. 🍫This of course means an increase in cases of accidental ingestion in pets, particularly dogs 🐶
Chocolate contains two related chemicals that can be toxic to pets - theobromine and caffeine. The amount of caffeine and theobromine in products will vary due to natural differences in cocoa beans and the formulation of the products. ⚠️ Common signs associated with large consumption of chocolate in animals include vomiting (in animals that can), diarrhoea, hyperactivity and restlessness, increased thirst, increased heart rate and tremors.
If you have any concerns that your pet has eaten chocolate, our on call vet is available on (01983) 214747 🩺🐾
